  • does anyone have the original peel session version of this? I remember it being by far the better version IMHO.

  • the bass is the fucking best bit.....

  • This is a really good performance. Only thing that annoys me is how stupidly loud the bass is.

  • I really like Edwyn's hairstyle...

  • Hearing this song for the first time a few days ago was no doubt a life changing experience!

  • Geez waisted man he's wasted but great version nontheless

  • love it! that song was mentionned in a very well-known and renommated german magazine, the "stern", and the authors introduced it by saying: "we envy all those who'll hear "rip it up" for the first time, because there's a new album....". I think they're right. I didn't know the song before, althroug I'm very interested in music, and it really ....took my heart. They sound so young, so innocent. Where has it all gone. Please, bring me back that feeling.

  • @apfelsabine I totally agree. But for now, all we have is youtube :)

  • cant believe the bassist is plugged in??? thoughts please...

  • luv that Bass sound

  • great song. reminds me of talking heads, but scottish

  • @dermotoblong - I agree. it reminds me of Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club (Tina Weymouth & Chris Frantz -Talking Heads). Love it.

  • @onmytrack yeah i can hear that too

  • Lol maybe should rip it up an start again

  • Edwyn Collins, Malcolm Ross, David McClymont & Zeke Manyika with "Rip It Up" album producer Martin Hayles at the back on keyboards & vocals.

  • love that song thanks for that rare version

  • A WEIRD version? More like an AWESOME version.

  • Excellent pop. They don't make them like this any more :(

  • yeah the drummer at 1:40!!!!

  • The electronic baseline is absolutely epic. Edwyn you are a legend.

  • this is so good not weird

    thanks for posting

dig the song dig the clothes and the dancing

  • it's weird, because it doesn't feature the 303 Roland on the original song. They ran a bass guitar through an effect pedal instead. Also, the keyboard player, who sings on the video, is NOT even in the band or the record!

  • weird??? how so...prolly jus some cheap wiz

  • yeah i agree, i was expecting some mad version. Its classic Orange Juice. Edwin is just really into it and so he should be its brilliant. One of the greatest singles ever in my opinion

  • Why is this a WEIRD version?

Sounds like a kick ass attemp at sounding like the recording live. :) love!

  • @AndyImsdahl Oh it IS awesome, like I said below, it's "weird" because the actual song on the album doesn't feature a bass guitar at ALL. They used a Roland 303 on the actual track. Here, they ran a bass guitar through a phaser. Also, the keyboard player, isn't even in the group! He's actually the producer, from what I understand. It's a very peculiar version, in terms of logistics. Otherwise, yeah it's friggin' awesome!

  • @evelsteev Not a phaser actually, but a Mu-Tron III envelope filter, you can see it on the floor in front of the bass amp at 1:48 :-)

  • @celestinocamicia aaaahhh thanks! I was wondering what exact kind of pedal the bass player was using!

  • THis track live is SUBLIME!

THis is one of THE best tracks not only of the 80s but one of THE best pop tracks ever.

STUNNING harmonies prersented here as well as brilliant synth effects!!!!

  • This is a classic tune ive used 2 copies in a dj set i did back in 87

  • who said bad haircuts in the 1980's.certainly not edwins!

  • I LOVE HOW AWKWARD HE IS HAHAA it's so cute.

  • great stuff get well soon edwyn

  • That bass sounds like it's been played in space! He must have some crazy effect pedal hooked up to it.

  • From what I understand they used a Roland 303 on the album, but they did use a certain effects pedal for the broadcast. Edwin explains it better on the DVD this was taken from. "The Old Grey Whistle Test, Vol. 3."

  • You should listen to some of Bootsy Collins' bass parts. The production on his bass is brilliant. I think it's most commonly referred to as the "farting bass" haha.
