The second single that i brought aged just 10yrs in 1971 was Tami Lynn....the first single was that of donnie elbert Where Did Our Love "Go Great Memories"
I've always thought people who don't get Northern Soul have got something missing. That's like 99.999999999999999% of all humanity, which is a pretty bleak thought really, isn't it?
sounds as though theres a bit of phill spector and his wall of sound on this record, some of todays so called singers should listen to music like this, and maybe they could learn a thing or to
when this record was reissued in 1971 Tami claimed in the press it's real title was "Why Don't I Run Away From You" and a typesetting error resulted in it being given the wrong title......does anyone know if this is true ?
brilliant song , a friend of mine ( much older than me ) he told me he remembers it being played at the northern soul all niters as they'r called . he used to go to venues such as the top of the world club newport road stafford , and the famous wigan casino . god i used to feel dead envious cos , they sounded really great buzzing and coming alive times. even now he is 66 he still enjoys going to these venues, when and wherever held !
The great Bert Berns wrote and produced this wonderful record. He also wrote and produced ' Here Comes The Night ' for Them and many other truly brilliant singles.
He died at the age of 38 in the sixties. But the music he created continues to
have it's joyous and powerful effect on us all. Long may it do so. Thank you
yes it can be found on a cd called WHERE IT'S AT , AT THE CLUB 25 soul essentials . of the 60's ultimate soul label atlantic . by kent dance . look on play.com , amazon or e-bay!
I see you have the album cover from an album I bought in the early 70's. It was a favorite of mine. If you have it can you post the monolog on the same album. I enjoyed Wing on your horn and Introduction to a love affair thanks
what a fantastic song brings back many happy memories.some of todays singers/songwriters should listen to this. and other 60s music and take notice, rather than churn out the crap thats going around today
love this, how do i find out about Mod night ?, me and my niece are great fans of northern soul and generally sixties music just wanna dance the night away to this great music... fantastic
@Georgiahulse actually it was 1965 when it was first released, Jerry Wexler discovered Tami (real name Gloria Brown) and got her to record this on Atlantic back in 65. It was a song that had been written by Bert Berns (1929-1967) who was responsible for many songs at that time .. Hang on Sloopy, The last time etc. Kiki Dee covered the song in early 1966 on fontana retitling it Why dont i run away from you
Wow this throws me right back to my childhood in the 70s. What fantastic times they were. When I hear this, I sing and dance around as if it was yesterday. Fond memories, combined with fantastic music.
the opening few bars of this is quite like another song....it took me 3 hours for my brain to sort thru a bunch of songs till....It printed out: Lou Christi's "Lightning Strikes" !!!
tami lynn, exelente , this topic is dance in the rockerias of argentine , and is one of my favorite songs( he shes ) put on the skin ( lether ) of hen i spread i saw the video. a big greetin from argentine daniel arguello
Absolutely love the part from 1:39 onwards...Take me back to my hometown South Africa(Durban). This song will always remind me of Durbs, And I love both Durbs and this tune. Luv u 2 Tami
In the Uk it was on Atlantic AT 4071 in1966 and got nowhere in the charts till it's 1st reissued in 1971 on MOJO 2092 001 then again on 2rd reissued in 1975 Contempo CS 9026
But some old Gold station always seem to play the rerecording of the song it's sounds the same till it come to the backing singer
cheers Ste for that mate, yea a bit more reading up...Tami (real name Gloria Brown was discovered in 65 by Jerry Wexler who got her to record this song which had been written by Bert Berns 1929-1967) writer of "Hang on Sloopy" ,and "The last time" among other greats. Kiki Dee also recorded this song in early 1966 on Fontana she retitled it "Why dont i run away from you" This version did well on radio Londons own chart spring 1966 (theres a copy on youtube)
a true classic, took me bloody years to aquire this song, turned up on an album called at the club, fantastic soul, proper soul compilation, well worth tracking down.
What memories this brings back. Thirteen years old & a man of the world. We thought knew everything.(yeh right) I really can't belive this is 38 yrs. old. Where have they all gone.
