  • Raw unedited talent. I'm so glad he fought for this.

  • Give Jesus a guitar and this is what it sounds like

  • The 8 dislikes "still don't know what love means"

This man is brilliant. Just pure.

  • @skysthelimitx wat an insult. there r many HUGE DIFFERENCE'S main one is RAY is a REAL person not a FICTIONAL character from a BOOK.

  • love ya ray ya make my life feel real even tho its not

  • Timeless talent!!

  • I go around making fun of videos and cracking jokes at them. I got nothin for this...the man's a genius.

  • this song saved my life

  • Wonderful voice...great talent.

  • what a genius. amazing voice!!!

  • 6.23 i lov the song trouble <3

  • whats the difference between ray and jesus? nothing BOOM

  • "Selling out" is when you change your style or foresake your artistic vision in the name of making a buck.

If an artist is simply making more money than he/she used to (because of greater exposure on commercials or TV shows), but hasn't caterred to anything other than the beckoning of their own soul's rhythms, that's not selling out. That's just becoming more popular. Although there is often a connection, popularity and soul-less music are not one in the same.

  • the great thing about him is that the cords he plays on his guitar are real simple, but he makes it beautiful with his voice, simplicity is bliss

  • Wow, this guy is just freaking great!!! Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but for Otis Redding fans, folks who are familiar with Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, this guy has it all. He's somewhere in between Richard and Rick, of The Band fame. But his lyrics also have the "geez is that Otis Redding" flavor to them. Take into consideration that he wrote this song and the guy is a force. I've been waiting for somebody to do music like "The Band" for a LONG time. This guy, he nails it!!

  • @mckinneyrd

wow i didin't notice until you said it, but i do see the similarity between "The Band".

  • @xBananaSurferx

good to hear someone else can see it. The music industry needs this guy.

  • Honestly, does it get any better?

  • True. Art. True. Passion.

  • like someone else said "it's like gravel wrapped in silk"

  • This man is SOUL defined.

  • 6:18 love it!!!

  • Ray is a great artist, but i liked him a lot more before the Pariah Dogs, especially his till the sun turns black album

  • @rickjames17085

you do realise that is the same group he has been touring with for years now right?

  • The commentary in the middle of this clip is very genuine and honest. I respect that in general, but am glad to hear it from a musician in the industry today.

  • Sorry for going back to Chuck Norris, but he has a poster of Ray LaMontagne in his bedroom or whatever he calls it.

  • Pretty sure this is what Jesus sounds like...

  • you are spectacular

  • He is encapsulated in his passion of every note, every lyric. A near extinct artist. Keep it close to you.

  • i love you ray

  • Ray is all alone, one of the greatest singer/songwriters alive today, plain and simple. ZBB did their best to cover Jolene but even a great band could not stand a chance against one man, one voice and one guitar. Nuff said!

  • WINNING!!!

  • I have been a lover of his music for years! All around amazing musician, gives me goosebumps every time i listen!

  • I guess the 6 people that hit dislike are the same people that think Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and Lil' Jon actually have talent and think their music is good. Gag me, please. Ray is so refreshing because he's a REAL musician that actually has a lot of talent. I guarantee that the majority of the "artists" in the top 40 can't even play an instrument.

  • @olemisspike could you possibly be any more generic. haha jesus here you are writing about self expression and reiterating the same argument this world has seen 10,000 times over. its sickening.

  • I love Jolene! it's by far my favorite song of Ray's!

  • Ray is single handedly, hand down, pound for pound, the most incredible artist recording music today. Genius and indispensable!!

  • so thiiiissss is what jesus looks and sounds like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hmm Jolene song has some powerfull lyrics! His voice has so much emotions and sadness to it... just perfect

  • Makes me shiver all over......

    Please tour Canada soon.... Please!!!!

  • Anyone recognize the microphone being used on his acoustic guitar? Looks like a U47 on the vocal, but I'm not sure about the guitar mic...

  • Want to? What do you mean want to? Let it go brother, if you cant weep on this one you have no soul!!!

  • WHEN "JOLENE" STARTS YOU JUST WANT TO WEEP.............ABOUT 30 WORDS INTO THE SONG.

THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN AS FOR THE LYRICS AND THEN MUSIC TO COMPLEMENT THE WORDS..

    A TRUE AMERICAN ICON!!!!

  • @MRMED123 I share your feeling, Good to hear it played over the end credits of "The Town". It hits me like the first time I hear it.

  • Amazing...amazing...amazing!!!!

  • I love this song i cant help but sing along. i may be off key and off tune but i love it so much i played it sseven times. :)

  • there is no comparison between ray lamontagne and james whats his face.......ray lamontagne is far superior!!!!!!!!

  • I read somewhere that Ray used to have a pretty crappy job and out of the blue quit it and practically locked himself in his apartment with otis redding and other motown records and taught himself to sing. some of his friends thought he moved out of town or died.

  • Ray apparently took his cue from another great American folk singer, Stephen Stills. Bothof these guys are underrated and both have more soul in one finger than Michael Bolton or Kanye West have combined.

  • I'd like to cover this but I can't cause I will never do this song justice.....Ray you are amazing....God willing and you will write a few more great tunes....I love it keep them coming....

  • pablo blaqk find your way

  • Better voice: Ray or James Morrison?

  • @calpitoc Ray by a mile!

  • @calpitoc Ooooh that's a close one. Ray's voice and James Morrison's is kind of similar to me. Right now, I'm preferring Ray's! He puts a lot of soul in to his songs and I just love him!

  • I dont understand why it took a freaking commercial on the tv for me to discover this guy . Where have I been , or better yet where has he been ?? This guy is an amazing talent with an INCREDIBLE voice . I am just glad I found him .

  • thats a massive boom and mic, guess thats what it takes to harness the unashamed raw power of Ray Lamontagne.

  • The 6 people who disliked this simply can't be human.

  • @batbawls No soul mate, no soul.

  • @batbawls cant be human ? i guess its the kind of GUYS that gets an erection with music from bieber or modern (junk) r&b (if they even know what that means)

Respect for Ray, an quite unknown artist that wrote amazing songs.. does not mean im a fan :)

  • I went to see The movie The Town just to see the credits because I heard Jolene would play the credits, and it did. I Love that song!

  • A unique talent

  • Heartbreakingly good

  • this song is from heart if you lived it u we sing it the best

  • I feel in love with this guy the first time i heard him.

  • Soul personified in the shot glass voice that is Ray LaMontagne . .

  • why do people think making money = selling out?

  • He talks so relaxed, and almost like a boy, but when he sings, he sings like a man!¬ insane!

  • i love this track...and i know what love means

  • is he the original singer of jolene or is it zac brown, because i loved it when they did it damn!

  • @HawaiiKoa

    neither, it's dolly.

  • @shineonocean no its not, dollys song jolene isnt the same

  • @HawaiiKoa ray is the original

  • a storyteller at it's best, with emotion anyone that listens can feel....this is what music is all about

  • His voice is so freaking beautiful. He's so freaking beautiful.

  • is this from abbey road?

  • Artists make music not record labels awesomely said!

  • rarely am I moved to tears...9 times outta 10 I pop my iPod in and listen to metal believe it or not. but this...I can't explain what it does to me. it breaks me down in ways no other artist has been capable of doing, rays's truly one in a million

  • When he talked about how hard it is to keep expressing himself I just wanted to go up there and give him a hug

Don't let them drag you down, because you're fans will always love you no matter what. And we love you because you are you and because of what you do as you and no record label will be able to change that. We don't love the label, we love your music and your voice and all these emotions and stories you convey through them to us!

  • Just Beautiful! Thank You! for sharing this! Peace

  • I've never gotten the chills during a song before. I usually scoff when someone comments saying they just got them. Well...I just got them. Raw talent. Just makes me want to close my eyes and forget about everything. The real meaning of music is Ray LaMontagne.

  • to brilliant songs , and his new album has some great songs as well i actually think album by album ray is getting better and better his voice is amazing live

  • thank you ray

  • this song centers me.

  • hes good but zac brown band does it better

  • @dyln321 O come on dawg, Ray wrote em both

  • @dyln321 This is not true. Here , Ray is doing his self. Zac Brown Band does it as a band, so it seems to have more substance. I love ZBB, but every time I hear Ray do it, it takes me back to the basic. A man alone with a guitar. There is not a better feeling then in the midnight night with a cup of joe, picking a song like this, or early morning for that fact. When a man can have the kind of talent like Ray has, he does not need a band around him.

  • I love this video! He is very talented.

  • An old college friend posted crazy on facebook and I was sold!!!

  • This man does not the million dollar tour bus he just want's to express himself because that's all we got sometimes, cause life is dark sometimes and he makes it beautiful!

  • @shrisstevens True! But Ray is selling out everywhere he goes. He's making close to millions///

  • amazing, so inspiring

  • His voice always gives me chills what an amazing Musician

  • Ray's voice is incredible. You never would of thought such a softly spoken man could have so much power and soul. When he sings 'Saved by a woman' it's like a freakin' foghorn. Amazing

  • to bad he sold out.

  • @pills2103 how?

  • @pills2103 I hope that's sarcasm

  • @pills2103 if by selling out you mean making a living and a rather good one writing and singing your own music then I guess your right. he would probably have been better not to sell out and just play at some local bar every friday night, in between working a shit job. : )

  • @johnj1200 You don't get it.

  • @pills2103, you must be using a definition of "sell out" that no one else uses. when i start hearing ray's music being used to sell burgers and tampons, then he'll be a sell out...until then, he's just making fantastic music.

  • @usamericanz Trouble would be a great song for a tampon advert XD

  • @usamericanz 5G7bGBUlx2M or travelers insurance? Is that on the list along with burgers and tampons?

  • @usamericanz Trouble was used on a bank commercial.. it was adorable, a dog couldn't sleep bc he couldnt find a good place to hide his bone.. check it out. Just saw Ray with David Gray last night... blew my mind.

  • @pills2103 I don't believe you get it?

  • @pills2103 TOO bad you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • @JohnsHouseofFun I don't? Please, prove me wrong. I love the man's music. But the quality of songwriting and emotion from his album, "Trouble" and "'Till the Sun Turns Black" compared to "Gossip in the Grain" is quite obviously different. Gossip has no substance and really is just a marketable album.

Also, is it coincidence that as soon as the album comes out his songs are featured in travelers insurance commercials? But, then again I have no idea what i'm talking about.

  • @pills2103 I disagree. There is definately growth upon every album especially with "Gossip" being his best musicaly & lyrically.

  • @pills2103 i really don't think you know what you're talking about. this happens with every artist that breaks through to some kind of commercial level. it doesn't necessarily mean they have sold out because ray lamontagne is far from selling out. the growth through albums is what should be visible. the fact that his song is on a commercial just gives him more fans and more support to be making more music. and obviously he's not doing it for the money, otherwise he'd be in some kind of rock band

  • I'll put money that the next album he puts out you will understand exactly what I mean.

  • @pills2103 It's sad how so many fans feel betrayed when they hear the music of their inspirations on commercials or in movies. You're right, Gossip in the Grain was way overproduced compared to his first albums, but do you see what he did with God Willin'? So many musicians are at the mercy of the record label when they reach a level of popularity. It's a compromise. They lose some creative control at first but they get another chance to prove themselves and receive ultimate control!

  • @asdisciple18 Haha yeah they feel so betrayed because they no longer have a feeling of exclusivity now that everyone else likes the same artist... And the first thing they do is lash out at the artist instead of just enjoying the music. It's pathetic.

  • @itsmarcus1 Yeah I can't imagine how he's sold out. If anything, he's maintained the same sound straight through. If getting a fuller sound with a backing band is selling out, then symphonies are a wholly owned commercial enterprise.

  • So did this happen at the Sundance Festival or is this just on the Sundance Channel?

  • amazing song~

  • soo fuckin awesome just soo fuckin awesome

  • Listening to Ray Lamontagne sing Jolene is a beautiful thing. I recently saw him on Spectacle with Elvis Costello when he was on with Lyle Lovett and John Prine. A few incredible song writers on stage together. All that could have made it better is if Amos Lee was up there with them. I will definitely be keeping my eyes and ears open for Ray in concert!!

  • @dbourrie ,,, hes on tour this summer

  • No matter how terrible my day is going, I can get into my car and put in his "Trouble" CD, and suddenly everything is okay, even if for just a few minutes. When music can do that, you know it's something special. Ray Lamontagne is the only person to ever make me cry just out of the simple beauty of his lyrics and soulful sound.

  • @wdblondie89 :) Isn't it just amazing?

  • @wdblondie89 dont you just love music that does that!?!?!!! There is nothing like it!

  • Saw him for the first time tonight on ELvis Costello's Spectacle can't believe haven't heard this before , Tomorrow , going out to buy some of his stuff , great ,

  • He's so fucking godly

  • the only artist left who sings with real heart and soul

  • @brennecke44 what about dan auerbach from the black keys?

  • @billymisfits he is awesome and so are the black keys... they are probably my favorite band right now but in terms of solo work.. i gotta give it to ray lamontagne... dan's voice is great but the strength and depth isn't there.

  • @yonner490 yeah ray is incredible no doubt about it. the black keys' new album is amazing! i got a chance to hear it today. they have the entire album posted on npr for free. dude this album is going down in the books for sure.

  • It's amazing how much disregard this man has for commercialism. The world doesn't know him, because he refuses to sell his soul for what may be the "taste of the month." Perhaps it's better this way. Would you want a corporate hand in the pocket of humanity?

  • Absolutely Lovely <3

  • I love music and never have I met an artist whose music seeps into every bone and core of my body the way Ray LaMontange has...Ray LaMontange is truly a talaned and amazing musican!

  • Yeah!

The term "classic" gets tossed around a lot, but Ray's the real deal. As Robert Frost said (expanding on Coleridge) the best poetry seems inevitable, best words in their best order. Ray's songs seem likewise fully realized, the music, the lyrics, the voice... it all hangs together perfectly.

  • @bezoris2g

Completely agree. I think a lot of it comes down to subtlety and knowing when and where to apply it. Another modern day artist that can accomplish this masterfully is Patty Griffin.

  • a man with a heart for his music!!! im in love, between him and Dallas Green, my 2 men!!!

  • whoo baby, "Jolene" is a good good good song... one of the best I've heard in a while

  • @RSrunner88 You need to get "The Foundation" by the Zac Brown Band and check out their version. It doesnt have the soul of this performance, but it is really cool to listen to.

  • That beautiful man brings tears to my eyes everytime he opens his mouth. I wish I knew him... or at least had a chance to simply tell him "Thank you."

  • @Iluvnatihoo RIGHT?

  • @mcrkid22 Right :)

  • @Iluvnatihoo i know what u mean..

  • @Iluvnatihoo Same here I'm tearing up right now and I have already listen to this song like 200 times in the last few days

  • @Iluvnatihoo me 2

  • This song i so beautiful and deep it makes me cry

  • i found myself face down in a ditch

booze in my hair, blood on my lips

a picture of you holding a picture of me in the pocket of my blue jeans

i still dont know what love means

    jolene

    best song ever!

  • I just covered 'Empty" by ray check it out!

  • still don't know what love means...

  • never in my life have i been brought to tears from a song. jolene did it for me. and have since became obsessed with this mans music. he has by far the most amazing voice and such deep deep lyrics. i would give anything to see him live.

  • This guy is DEEP! A real musician. Thanks for the tune.

  • Simply man who just wants to play music...love your talents...keep it up..awesome!

  • I hate him.

He's sexy, talented, an AMAZING SINGER, AMAZING MUSICIAN, he has the best eyes ever, the best beard ever (which is weird cause I hate beards), and he's so....idk shy. strong and silent type. damn ray. hate him.

  • I do not usually like facial hair. But then I look at Ray . . . I hear that beautiful voice of his, and I instantly change my mind.

  • If I were to spend the rest of my life in a desert island and if I could take just one singer with me, I would think seriously in take Ray LaMontagne with me...

  • What microphones are those I wonder

  • this man singlehandedly made my passion for the 1800s fire up.

i don't know why, but his music reminds me of the 1800s. Just a man, his guitar, and his sorrow.

  • I agree it does sound like another era, but I picture his voice and whole vibe and aura being reminiscent of the 1950's and early 1960's. 1950's especially. Sam and dave. Percy Sledge and so on

  • this guy is just amazing! but is it just me or does his voice on "saved" in trouble sound a bit strange? shouldn't the tune be a bit higher?

  • what a mofo, apparently he has perfect pitch, not to mention great artistry and a unique voice - and plays a quirky guitar using his entire forearm to strum.

what i'd give to be half the musician he is.

  • @webbcp You can start by using your entire forearm to strum.

  • @webbcp I know a few musicians with perfect pitch and they have the worst timing I've ever heard, I suppose 1 thing compensates the other... LOL!! Certainly isn't a help for making great music. Ray Lamontagne is just pure talent.

  • perfect voice, perfect song, perfect beard :)

  • wow! seriously, so incredible! Amazing voice!

  • jesus looks like him

  • He is bob dylan with a voice

  • hes all cracked up in that interview

  • He is the Neil Young/Van Morrison of our generation. Amazing.

  • ...a nine lbs hammer, or a woman like you...
