I'm fortunate to live in a place where we will never run out of cheap renewable electricity. That said, being off the grid, even where I live, if coupled with being self-sufficient, sounds quite tempting.

Also, I cannot say enough good for the Transition Towns movement. Look it up on Wikipedia, it's worth the read.
