Hornby uses the whistle to let you know you are about to change between forward and reverse. So, if you want to make it whistle before starting off, the best way is to reverse the engine to pick up its train, then change the direction to pull away with the train, which takes you through the whistle cycle before setting off. Its a bit complicated, but with practice its no problem. Live steam OO is no end of fun to drive.
@djrobod You move the regulator into reverse as if you would like the train to go backwords, a bit of a bad design as you can not whistle when moving forward!!! Just before taking off!!!!

How do you make it whistle? I haven't come across a video demonstrating that feature.
Cheers.
