if an aircraft has a groundspeed of 500 knots, how does a tail wind of 70 knots manage to increase the ground speed. How does a 70 knot tail wind catch a moving object travelling at 500knots. ITs weird and i haven't got access to a wind tunnel. I'd love to build one and design my own aircraft
No wind tunnel necessary. Wind doesn't "catch up" to an airplane. Airplanes fly through the air. When the air is moving seventy knots the airplane is moving through it and benefitting by that movement. Aircraft don't know or care where the ground is...they aren't referenced to the ground and fly through wind only. Conversely, the airplane doesnt catch up to the wind in a headwind. 70 knots on the nose is 430, and 70 on the tail is 570.
Thanks The V8 was running at about 110-115 hp not much more than an O200. It was very nose heavy with the V8. The 0320 has been worked 11-1 compressions. proberly close to 180Hp. performation is 145kts max Now 174kts flat out. It out ran a 160hp Rv3 last summer. The Whittman had two up too.
Redneck Air....

Man, the music is awful in this video. It sure would be nice to watch this without the tacky music.

500 knots plus a 70 knot tailwind adds up a ground speed of 570 knots

a really good "low pass" would have topped this video off.

Ill add a low pass onto the video soon
