They're not really legal in the US either. The laws vary by state, but normally the headlights have to be so far off the ground and the wheels normally have to have a fender around them. You can bend the rules though. For example, if your vehicle only has three wheels, then it's a motorcycle and doesn't have to follow "car rules," or if it's a "farm vehicle" almost anything goes.
