A lot of people don't realize that Maxine used to accompany Bernie to many of Elton's concerts, and she would literally dance off to the side of the stage to all of the songs - I saw her do this when Elton played a concert at Cornell University back in the early 70s. And, if you look inside the album, you'll see a picture of Maxine smiling - really does look like a 'pirate smile.' Perhaps that is how she and the song got its name!
She REALLY DID dance at his concerts. Elton did a concert in Ithaca, NY on Sep 26 1972 at Barton Hall - I was there - and over to the far side of the stage almost out of view (but still on the stage), was a girl dancing, practically during the entire show. I was close enough to be able to see her face and discoveredlater that it was indeed Maxine.
