The engineers are dealing with a new sound called distortion comming out of John's amp straight into his mic, and they are riding the fader to try to keep it down. Had the sure sm58 been available then, it would be a different story. You guys are right the mics are hot. Great video!
their mics are on, but they are singing over a recording that's why John does not sing that last "alright" but it is heard. yeah, george says "john's mic is shit!"
"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink... We're more popular than Jesus now—I don't know which will go first, rock and roll or Christianity."
And that was the origin of "bigger than jesus". It was pulled out of context, and so lovely America decided to burn his shit. Oh well..
John also made several remarks that I think show's him being a non-christian. Still, he said he was a 'most religious fellow'..
So maybe agnostic would be a better word. Still not angelic though.
This was almost an anti-revolution song. It was anti-Mao and anti-violence. Thank goodness. The Stones never really became political. In fact, the intelligent bands didn't. One could be cynical and say too much money to lose. I am sure the boring Neil Young would have made more dollars if he had stuck to non-political stuff.
@pienivla Actually you can have a great career by doing political stuff. If you like heavy metal, Megadeth is a great example. Political songs, non-political songs and a great career. Sometimes it's not just about money.
@funkmasterjee Today's metalheads and other various creeps don't seem to agree with you. They think of Beatles as Jonas Brothers of the '60s with all the screaming bitches.
@back2realitygal11 actually, Paul was is roman catholic, John was Anglican, George was Hindu, and Ringo doesn't tell his religion to anyone, he says it personal.
and there nothing wrong with Catholics so relax kid...
@sacramentolove no. Paul wasnt really ever religious. Nor was John, even though he was raised that way, he didnt care for religion. George was raised Catholic and i think he still was. He wasnt hindu just because he went to fucking india. And Ringo is OBVIOUSLY to this day Christian because he's always wearing crosses. Its some sort of Anglican... where do you get this anyway? You're sort of... um.... WRONG. and dont tell me to fucking chill. I have a right to be pissed. Back off.
@sacramentolove Oh and by the way, John wrote a song ( I dont know if youve heard of it because you obviously have no idea what you're talking about ) called "God' and Its say very clearly, "I dont believe in Bible" and " I dont believe in Jesus" and you say hes Anglican, and Anglicans very much so believe in Jesus and the Bible. Theyre Christians. Soo he obviously was RAISED Anglican, he just didnt really follow through with it.So just shut up.You obviously have no idea what youre talking about
@back2realitygal11 dude, he had some beliefs in jesus and god, remember he said "we're bigger than christ" which he really didnt mean to say but i know what im talking about, john was anglican and you cant change that by saying hes not, he wasnt hiding his background and religion, he was proud of it, and thats how it is so you shut up kid...
@sacramentolove Okay, whatever. I was just trying to prove my point that I've made all along. And dont call me a fucking kid. That's like the 15th time you've said it. I fucking 20 years old so shut the fuck up.
@sacramentolove John made the "bigger than jesus"-statement in 1966, and wrote God in 1970. And he didn't even say that the Beatles were bigger than christ (though they were), he said that they meant more to kids than christ did... which was also true.
I think I would be right when I call John an atheist.
@Torbjaaarn He said "we're bigger than Jesus". 5 months later, people responded, banned Beatles music in radio stations, ripped up John's books and albums, aimed with gun fire in concerts and tours, that's one reason they stopped touring. And who are you to say John is an atheist? He had some beliefs in God and Jesus. He was Anglican, but he turned into a Christian in Spring, 1977.
@sacramentolove i thought they stopped touring because of the trouble they had in Manila,,,,,,,i cant remember....which came first when they got roughed up in Manila and someone shot at the plane or the "john and the jesus statement"
yeah, this was very common in the 1960s -- TV producers did not want to take a chance of somebody messing up the instrumental tracks during a live take, so they would play the studio backing tracks and let the singers sing live.
@jaystarstar they were not in front of a live audience. They did a few versions and what you see is actually a splicing of two or three versions that they did. They recorded this video to be shown on the David Frost show in UK . They had the instruments taped not out of any live consideration but that they were trying to bypass the BBC union's miming ban that was in effect at this time
@Refrescospepito Yeah they are only singing live. The instruments and some of John's extra vocals are from the recording. There was a BBC union miming ban at this time and so they decided to sing it live to their recorded backing tape.
john plays a mean guitar here...too bad they didn't do more songs while they were there...i think they still liked to play and might have toured again...the earlier tours with all the screaming and problems made them not want to tour but i think if they had toured in 1968 they would have found people had calmed down.
After a few listens, its obvious their mics were hot, but definitely a backing tape switched on they had to wait for, then a 4-count to get the pace set. They used a multi-track machine for the original recording in their studio on a previous date. Then they probably relied on an engineer to isolate and remove the vocal tracks for this television taping. One unavoidable goof was at the very end, where you hear an extra "Alright!" that was recorded on one of the original guitar tracks by John.
The vocals are live, but the instruments are not. I'm not sure why, but it's what I've always read about it. I wonder if there's a version with the instrumetns actually souinding through....
George is saying, "This monitor stinks", referring to the speaker monitor in front of him & Paul - they couldn't hear the backing track that they were playing to (which contained the electric piano)
I miss John Lennon. I would LOVE to hear what he would say today or sing today about President Obama's "hand picked" people quoting Chairman Mao Tse-tung!! "If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone any how..."
Well, let's go to the words: VERSE 1 paraphrased: I think a revolution isn't bad, and evolution of society can be good, but violence is OUT. John wants peace. VERSE 2 paraphrased: I'll look at the plan, I'll consider a donation, but hate is BYE BYE. VERSE 3: Change the Constitution? Nope. Blame the institution? Nope, blame yourself for a closed mind. Mao and Communism? NOPE! Guess what: It's gonna be ALL RIGHT! PEACE is the answer. MLK Jr, Ghandi, Jesus. Dig it.
George played the "Hey Bulldog" solo on his SG (catch the video- I think it's here on YouTube somewhere). John wasn't much of a picker, but he was a terrific slide player. Listen to him on "For You Blue" and "Crippled Inside."
.. truebut john showed george the solo .. ive see footage of john showing george how to play the solo... george is going ok how do i get the other bit and john grabs the 'sg' and plays the riff
what would honestly make you say something like that obviously hes not an imposter i don't know if he played a les paul or not but it is still him in the video
They may have sung live to a backing track of instruments and vocals. When Paul sings Hey Jude, you hear two voices singing in unison.
Revolution must be performed with a backing track of the single. As good as The Beatles were, I just don't think there's anyway they could have recreated the same exact sound one hears on the recording, in a television studio. It sounds just like the single to me. And as I mentioned before John doesn't sing the last "Alright".
There were three takes done live on David frost. The 2nd Take shown in America on the Smothers brothers Show. It was recorded Live..Yes there could have been a backing trac, however hey Jude was recorded live..besides liosten to the Chorus..all ad Libed by paul!..You hear nothing that replicated the Released recorded Track!!..Keep Rockin'..Mike/Ft.Worth,Tx
Hate to disappoint, but they lip-synced these two songs - very well, I might add. Notice that John doesn't lip-sync the last "alright". This is the single version. I always wondered what was with the ambiguity when John sings "You can count me out", then he adds "in".
Excuse me.but thiduis not Lip synched!!..Nicky Hopkins is playing the Organ..you hear John say..Out..in...You hear a microphone in the backgtound. The way you can tell if a song was Lip symced back them..is..it was live when there was a Microphone..There may have been a backing Track..however..this was Live!!..also you can hear Paul and george repeat.."Don't you know it's gonna be..".!.Also ,listen and you can hear 'revberv from the Mic!.L Mike/Keller,Tx
This is not Lip synched..They sang live with a Backing trac.Example..pull up 'All you need is Love'..Recorded Live, but with a backing trac.....Check out 'Beatles recording sessions 1962-1970...Opening gutar Riff by John is also live..Mike/Ft.Worth,Texas
This is one of two Takes originally shown on the David frost Show in England. Nicky Hopkins, who did work with the Rolling Stones is playing the Organ, but not shown as he was not a member of the band...Their were only three Artist who played on a Beatles Song...Nicky Hopkins, Dric Clapton, and Billy Preston... Great Live Version of this Song!!..Mike McLeod/Keller,Tx
You are correct..some Indian Muscisions played on that song,Howver, the other Beatles were not there. This was done solo,by george on Sgt. Pepper. See 'Beatles recording Sessions 1962-1970. Ravi Shankar [ Nora Jones father] taught George to play Sitar..don't know anyone named Anil Bagwat??..Mike/Keller,Texas
I believe Anil Bagwat played on the Revolver album, but since I have misplaced my copy can't be sure. My mistake about Sgt. Pepper. Is there any video of Clapton playing on While my Guitar . . .? That would be cool to see.
LOVE that phony canned applause every television show in the 60s and70s used. We didn't notice it back them because of the lousy land lines the TV networks used to transmit the shows, but boy, you can pick them out a mile away now.
Thanx Ubeans, U have interesting stuff on subliminal Beatles. For 40 years I loved this Revolution song, Then...on this tape...There's John doin' that orgasm thing, punctuated by that angry hateful look on his face. The looks on Paul's face is priceless! ............I never ever noticed.
They were a popular comedy team with a popular show on tv in the late sixties. They were often in ttrouble for censorshp problems. They stil perform todya, but they must be in their early seventies or late sixties by now. Tommy and Dick Smothers.
Per "A Revolution In The Head" the slow (LP) version was recorded in May68 (2 months after India) & had the in/out declaration but it also had a doo-wop vocal backing. The fast version (45rpm) was recorded in July68 with no doo-wop backing & only the "out". Yes, this was the first time Yoko was involved. BUT this vocal is different from either LP or 45 & was recorded for this performance, but mimed for technical reasons & they couldn't be bothered to redo the video"fluffs".
it was really weird to see them live here? It was nothing like their wonderful, energetic, and goofy performances of the years earlier. You could see the disinterest to perform, and the influence of all the drugs they were on at the time, it was soo evident in this performance. Yoko was right, you can see a total transformation of this band, starting w/ this song.. Were they actually playing? i know the vocals seemed live, but it sounded like they were playing to a backing track?? WTF?
who was playing piano? anyone know? trying to think what was live on this take, i know something wasn't but they had to work it so they didn't break the live performance union thing, nice to hear the real vocal version though, cheers
there is no keyboard player because they are playing on a backing track the vocals are live on the record version session muscian nicky hopkins plays keyboards
The engineers are dealing with a new sound called distortion comming out of John's amp straight into his mic, and they are riding the fader to try to keep it down. Had the sure sm58 been available then, it would be a different story. You guys are right the mics are hot. Great video!

LOVE that phony canned applause every television show in the 60s and70s used. We didn't notice it back them because of the lousy land lines the TV networks used to transmit the shows, but boy, you can pick them out a mile away now.

At 2:11- 2:21 John is faking orgasm, sounds while Paul is giving him funny perplexing looks.

Who in two sausages are The Smothers Brothers. We have been denied them in the UK.
TROUSERFLAP 2 years ago
They were a popular comedy team with a popular show on tv in the late sixties. They were often in ttrouble for censorshp problems. They stil perform todya, but they must be in their early seventies or late sixties by now. Tommy and Dick Smothers.

It's mic not smells, didn't you hear it give off reverb at about 0:41 to about 0:46?

lennon and the rest are singing live to a backing track. only on the word 'alright' in the chorus is it doubled with the original vocal track.

I think John was conflicted about using out or in.He gave in on the single and said out.

it was really weird to see them live here? It was nothing like their wonderful, energetic, and goofy performances of the years earlier. You could see the disinterest to perform, and the influence of all the drugs they were on at the time, it was soo evident in this performance. Yoko was right, you can see a total transformation of this band, starting w/ this song.. Were they actually playing? i know the vocals seemed live, but it sounded like they were playing to a backing track?? WTF?

kind of harsh to say about john

O and is this song on The White Album?
MissRandom79 3 years ago
This song was released as a single. A different version of the song is on the White Album. Slower, kind of doo-woppy, slightly revised lyrics.

Great video but it is obvious they are just singing over the original. Lennon is nowhere near the mike at the final "alright"
vandenro 3 years ago
I don't think that they were singing over but they had a backing track that said the "Alright"s because John couldn't get all of them in.
rjkahlon 3 years ago
