  • Dear Webmaster, Again I say, this the one I was looking for! Thank you!

  • The sound isn't perfectly in sync with the vision. Watch the shorter version elsewhere on YouTube and you'll see Karen's singing 100% live. And brilliantly.

  • T_T

  • T_T Sniffle...Friggin beautiful...

  • Karen, there's tears in my eyes.

  • Who did the cover in the Nikon commercial with Ashton Kutcher?

  • When was this TV broadcast?

  • "Close to You", the Carpenters classic song which began their fame & fortune with the hot-selling album of the same name, winning them their first 2 Grammy's in 1970 as Best New Artist and Best Pop Duo, beating out fellow nominees Jackson 5, Simon & Garfunkel, Chicago & the Beatles, their idols! Love the close-ups of Karen, Richard & the band. This is my favorite Carpenters look of the early '70's.

  • Simplicity sometimes is exactly why today's songs come and go and this remains a classic.

  • Karen Carpenter had a sadness and innocence about her that came out in all her songs, but, always, the beauty of her songs superceded the sadness.

  • the clarinettists beard is awesome!!

  • Im not gonna joke about the dislike, I just wanna say to him F U

  • That was beatiful.

  • Before I just think just only voice is good, well she is very pretty too.

  • Most beautiful voice. Karen Carpenter.

  • her voice is nearly exactly the same live as it is studio. NEARLY EXACTLY. we need real singers to come back to the charts!!!!

  • let's try to have the current modern singers do this song!! No one will come close to the carpenters...

  • @carwashhand The problem is that when you strain your voice to reach Karen's you run the risk of exposing your limitations. Easy to mimic her in a studio, harder to come out and sing this live and not miss a note or a key. Watch Katy Perry live and see for yourself how strained her voice becomes if she pushes a high note. Karen NEVER strained to reach it, that is why she is a legend.

  • @djtutone Yes, but its a mime. Watch at 2:29, where, while her mike away from her face there is no drop in level. Compressors are not that good, and neither was she when singing live.

  • @djtutone Yes, but its a mime. Watch at 2:29, where, while her mike away from her face there is no drop in level. Compressors are not that good, and neither was she when singing live. And the guitars aren't plugged in. Its a mime

  • @ttonycox Yes, she DID have a good voice live, they just couln't do the harmonies the same without the overdubbing of just Richard and Karen's voices like on the recordings...and the vocal on this IS live (listen to the recording right after this and you'll hear the difference). The music is not live, the singing is!

  • @shnooger Actually both the vocal and the music *is* live here- for example, on the recording, it's a trumpet solo; here, it's a clarinet. The background harmonies are minus Karen (all men, some doing falsetto).

  • the first Carpenters Song that I've fallen in love with :) I really love it! Karen is such an Angel!

  • wadda song..Nice!!

  • The most Beautiful & Angelic person I have ever seen. Voice of an Angel, Eyes of God- Karen Carpenter. The Carpenters contribution to music is so apprieciated by millions of people, even today. This was the Best selling American group between 1970-80 The Carpenters band was second to none, Richard's hard work should be rewarded with a Life time achievement award, & The Hall of Fame needs to open their eyes & realize that this group should have been put in a long time ago.

  • too bad Karen pass away too young.

  • it's a gift from heaven.... her voice makes me drown..

  • magic, another clasic from v past, cheers.

  • PERFECTION

  • She was a joy to listen to. She is forever young.

  • I'm in awe of how perfectly she sings. Music and artists like these are so missed. Live for crapsakes! sheesh.

  • oh karen you've been missed so much... todays music is a crack...there would never be another Karen & voice like that today and forever, bcoz Karen is only one, a true Diva, Artist, singer, vocalist and mostly a LEGEND...4ever...

  • @eXtremeMohaz

zgadzam sie z Tobą była I jest wyjątkowa

  • genius :x

  • all the songs of carpenters are amazing i love all their songs , me encantan sus canciones y a mi parecer son lo mejor

  • This entire concert is a tribute to the talents of both Karen and Richard - their harmony vocals are amazing on this entire concert - thank goodness for the BBC recording them at their very peak.

  • Syrup/Spirit of Ipecacuana (ipecac, not epicat) induces vomiting. S American origin. Now widely used in poisoning treatment (not induction of acids tho). J

  • Apparently Karen died of taking a liquid called something like "epicat" which is a liquid that is given to people who have taken poison as it induces vomiting (Karen would have drank this during the time she was trying to get thin). It also creates severe heart strain as a result. Karen took too much of it as her heart suffered and her death

was a result of this and hence, her heart attack from it..

  • Ipecac ipecac ipecac

Congestive heart failure not a heart attack brought on by sudden weight gain following hyperalimentation.

  • she died from being anorexic for so long, some poepl say she abused that stuff but karen was anorexic NOT bulemic, theres a difference. Anyways richard said she never would use that because of how damaging it is to ur vocals and i believe him...especially because of what i just said above

  • does karen give richard a strange look at the beginning because of misplayed note or a timing thing....something didnt sound right...anyways this is amazing

  • Steve,

You're so right - I noticed that, too!

  • yes Richard hit the wrong note and came in late..oops!

  • I love this video. Great performance.

  • she is sjust so beautiful and her voice to

  • What's crap is that you can't attend a good live performance nowadays, allll the popular bands are shit, especially the vocals, but this is a great song sung by a great vocalist.

  • So true. Unfortunately, the music industry today has changed - BIG TIME! Nowadays, buying an CD or even going to a concert is all about the artist and their image - not so much about the vocals which can these days, because with all the technology such as pitch correctors and such, even a weak vocalist can sound half decent. Back in the day, it music was more natural sounding and less commercial.

  • Excellent points. With modern technology, just about anyone can sound good on a CD. The real test is signing live...then we find out who can really sing.

  • this was the time when everyone just sings and dream...

  • "Close To You" is a classic. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful woman to man song ever made!

  • My brothers and I loved the Carpenters, even though they were kinda square when you look at them perform. We didn't care. The talent just shined through and the music was so heartfelt and beautiful.

  • Thank you so much Willie1two for providing this! This is the first film footage that I actually SAW Karen Carpenter sing "Close To You"! It is one of my favorites. When I was a child, I had to go to the hospital. I heard this song in the lobby and for some reason, my fears were calmed. I was so sad when she passed away. Richard was - and is - a great Pianist and musical genius with the four-track!

  • You can thank Burt Bacharach and Hal David for that. :)

  • Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote the music but it was the amazing vocals of Karen that made it famous.

  • I think Carpenters' is the sweetest version of this song. Thanks for posting!

  • Without a doubt.They own it.

  • she is singing live here and does not sound as good as the record but still sounds fab

  • This video has the only time that Richard slipped up on stage... At the very beginning of the song he plays a wrong note.. Watch carefully you can see Karen look over at him in question.. but she covers for it very well..

  • I´ll always love keren`s voice, it was so sweet that feel i am in the heaven, it was a pity she died so young, but you are close to God right now, singing for him

  • her voice and the lyric are brilliant!

  • the most beautiful voice in all the times

  • Ah....this song...my first love. I still wonder where he is even after 40 odd years...he was sooo beautiful, smile, eyes, just perfect.

Thanks for posting this! Brought back many happy memories...

  • Beautiful, Wonderful Karen.....no lip sync no fake audio....perfect vocals.....

You don't see that type of popular singing anymore in today degenerate music scene

  • karen carpenter la voz mas hermosa que he escuchado, por eso te amo mi amor.

  • my good her voice is timeless :)

  • i will never get tired in listening to her voice and this song is really one of the best song ever created! great song + great singer =PERFECT!!!

  • What is not to like about this song? It's a classic for all time.....perfect.

  • KAREN SPIRIT WAS HERE...

  • absolutely love her and always have for as long as i could listen to music.

    RIP Karen Carpenter (1950-1983)

    You will always be missed....

  • omg me and my bff luv dis song!!!

  • This song, hit through the roof! it was #1 for four weeks, and it snagged a Grammy. Rest In Peace Karen, we miss you.

  • nice hair

  • My gosh, the Carpenters wrote brilliant music. Pure heaven.

  • I think it's just right for her. Because if she wore sexy and naked dresses maybe the people won't like her. Hehe. At least she decided to cover her body all around.

  • i love her voice...kinda hard to explain..its like she has a clean,clear,crisp voice.i just love it.best song ever...they def. define the 70s.

  • i really love the way she dress herself. wow. very modest. i would like to wear some kind of clothes like this in our church. but maybe people would laugh at me while i walk. hayst. i hope the old-fashion would come back once again.

  • I think sometimes she went too old fashioned, especially on the "We've Only Just Begun" video from Interpretations (Make Your Own Kind of Music) and "Superstar" also from Interpretations (Fifth Dimension's Travelling Sunshine Show).

  • I like her style in dress, along with her music it makes her special.

  • yah. me too. i just love the way she wear and styles her hair. very nice!

  • To me, she looked best around 74-75 (before all the dieting) when she relaxed and had a casual look. The granny look here just doesn't suit a 20 year old pretty girl.

  • i love u Rick and karen

  • sweet

  • you came to me last night in a beautiful, and very haunting dream. I wanted It to be real, then you vanished into the air.You were trying to say something.I'm sorry for what I said.I'll be good for now on, I promise.

  • Thats what a lady should be like!and never mind what's on the outside!

  • At the word "birds" at the beginning, Richard plays the incorrect chord; Karen looks over at him at that point. This song illustrates how hard the Carpenters tried to duplicate their records when they performed their songs live.

  • Yeah, I've noticed that too.

  • when I was a child three things seamed to laste for ever in Mexico City: Carpenter´s Close to You, Ryan O´nell and Ali Mc Grow´s Love Story and Bikers movie Born Loosers. Only Close to you remains.

  • It's astounding to me that it's nearly impossible to find any notes that Karen didn't hit in any of the live YouTube postings. How could anyone sing so close to perfection?!

  • She was an Angel from Heaven, only here

    for a short visit.

  • Oh, I love her voice!!! Thanks for posting!

  • Es un tema hermoso! definitivamente conmovedor!

  • I just simply love this song also. It's one of the greats. Nobody can touch Karen's voice, it's in a league of its own. She is still missed.

  • very, very good. Is my superstar.

  • Check out 0:15 and the look Karen gives Richard at when blows the timing -lol!

If you get a chance, please post the BBC performance of "Superstar"... that was the best live performance of that song ever done.

  • I agree with you, her live performance of "Superstar" is the best I ever saw. I have the whole video, but not that one song. She also does an incredible version of "Rainy Days and Mondays" on that also.

  • JP5466 Thanks. This is so good and so close to the record I was wondering how "live" this really was. Your comment, plus some more obvious deviations from the record at about the 2:00 mark confirmed for me that it was live. When was this? - she seems pretty thin here. What a waste of a great talent. Not the most powerful voice ever but one of the most gorgeous sounding ones !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I believe this was 1971. Before the Carpenters' appearance on the national scene, in her late teens (at 17?), I believe, Karen went on her first weight-loss diet (In 1967 she was 17). Richard Carpenter has stated he thinks she became anorexic in 1975. Contrary to popular belief, Karen did not die emaciated, but weighed 108 pounds.

  • this is what is known as a 'semi-live' performance. all the instrumentalists and vocalists are live, but they are playing along with the original record, as it has on it the string arrangement, which they could not reproduce live as they had no orchestra!
