shes gorgeous and awesome song love karen we miss u angel ive listened to their music since the 70s never gets old timeless shes singing in heaven shes an angel fasho
The sound isn't perfectly in sync with the vision. Watch the shorter version elsewhere on YouTube and you'll see Karen's singing 100% live. And brilliantly.
"Close to You", the Carpenters classic song which began their fame & fortune with the hot-selling album of the same name, winning them their first 2 Grammy's in 1970 as Best New Artist and Best Pop Duo, beating out fellow nominees Jackson 5, Simon & Garfunkel, Chicago & the Beatles, their idols! Love the close-ups of Karen, Richard & the band. This is my favorite Carpenters look of the early '70's.
@carwashhand The problem is that when you strain your voice to reach Karen's you run the risk of exposing your limitations. Easy to mimic her in a studio, harder to come out and sing this live and not miss a note or a key. Watch Katy Perry live and see for yourself how strained her voice becomes if she pushes a high note. Karen NEVER strained to reach it, that is why she is a legend.
@djtutone Tell you a little Karen secret. She had a way on a bad day (If she really had one of those) of knowing how to push the words out & carry it well. Karen just happened to have a nice voice & also a nice singing voice. If she was practicing on the end of the couch though, you could barley here her, it was soft. The song Solitare is a great example of how Karen could change her register in the middle of the sentence-however her higher voice was coming more into play by this time.
@djtutone Yes, but its a mime. Watch at 2:29, where, while her mike away from her face there is no drop in level. Compressors are not that good, and neither was she when singing live.
@djtutone Yes, but its a mime. Watch at 2:29, where, while her mike away from her face there is no drop in level. Compressors are not that good, and neither was she when singing live. And the guitars aren't plugged in. Its a mime
@ttonycox Yes, she DID have a good voice live, they just couln't do the harmonies the same without the overdubbing of just Richard and Karen's voices like on the recordings...and the vocal on this IS live (listen to the recording right after this and you'll hear the difference). The music is not live, the singing is!
@shnooger Actually both the vocal and the music *is* live here- for example, on the recording, it's a trumpet solo; here, it's a clarinet. The background harmonies are minus Karen (all men, some doing falsetto).
The most Beautiful & Angelic person I have ever seen. Voice of an Angel, Eyes of God- Karen Carpenter. The Carpenters contribution to music is so apprieciated by millions of people, even today. This was the Best selling American group between 1970-80 The Carpenters band was second to none, Richard's hard work should be rewarded with a Life time achievement award, & The Hall of Fame needs to open their eyes & realize that this group should have been put in a long time ago.
oh karen you've been missed so much... todays music is a crack...there would never be another Karen & voice like that today and forever, bcoz Karen is only one, a true Diva, Artist, singer, vocalist and mostly a LEGEND...4ever...
This entire concert is a tribute to the talents of both Karen and Richard - their harmony vocals are amazing on this entire concert - thank goodness for the BBC recording them at their very peak.
Syrup/Spirit of Ipecacuana (ipecac, not epicat) induces vomiting. S American origin. Now widely used in poisoning treatment (not induction of acids tho). J
Apparently Karen died of taking a liquid called something like "epicat" which is a liquid that is given to people who have taken poison as it induces vomiting (Karen would have drank this during the time she was trying to get thin). It also creates severe heart strain as a result. Karen took too much of it as her heart suffered and her death
was a result of this and hence, her heart attack from it..
she died from being anorexic for so long, some poepl say she abused that stuff but karen was anorexic NOT bulemic, theres a difference. Anyways richard said she never would use that because of how damaging it is to ur vocals and i believe him...especially because of what i just said above
does karen give richard a strange look at the beginning because of misplayed note or a timing thing....something didnt sound right...anyways this is amazing
What's crap is that you can't attend a good live performance nowadays, allll the popular bands are shit, especially the vocals, but this is a great song sung by a great vocalist.
So true. Unfortunately, the music industry today has changed - BIG TIME! Nowadays, buying an CD or even going to a concert is all about the artist and their image - not so much about the vocals which can these days, because with all the technology such as pitch correctors and such, even a weak vocalist can sound half decent. Back in the day, it music was more natural sounding and less commercial.
Excellent points. With modern technology, just about anyone can sound good on a CD. The real test is signing live...then we find out who can really sing.
My brothers and I loved the Carpenters, even though they were kinda square when you look at them perform. We didn't care. The talent just shined through and the music was so heartfelt and beautiful.
Thank you so much Willie1two for providing this! This is the first film footage that I actually SAW Karen Carpenter sing "Close To You"! It is one of my favorites. When I was a child, I had to go to the hospital. I heard this song in the lobby and for some reason, my fears were calmed. I was so sad when she passed away. Richard was - and is - a great Pianist and musical genius with the four-track!
Why aren't there melodies like this nowadays....I love Karen's voice but who doesn't...if u have time have a listen to my Eurovision 2009 entry for Ireland its on my site.........
This video has the only time that Richard slipped up on stage... At the very beginning of the song he plays a wrong note.. Watch carefully you can see Karen look over at him in question.. but she covers for it very well..
I´ll always love keren`s voice, it was so sweet that feel i am in the heaven, it was a pity she died so young, but you are close to God right now, singing for him
I think it's just right for her. Because if she wore sexy and naked dresses maybe the people won't like her. Hehe. At least she decided to cover her body all around.
i really love the way she dress herself. wow. very modest. i would like to wear some kind of clothes like this in our church. but maybe people would laugh at me while i walk. hayst. i hope the old-fashion would come back once again.
I think sometimes she went too old fashioned, especially on the "We've Only Just Begun" video from Interpretations (Make Your Own Kind of Music) and "Superstar" also from Interpretations (Fifth Dimension's Travelling Sunshine Show).
To me, she looked best around 74-75 (before all the dieting) when she relaxed and had a casual look. The granny look here just doesn't suit a 20 year old pretty girl.
you came to me last night in a beautiful, and very haunting dream. I wanted It to be real, then you vanished into the air.You were trying to say something.I'm sorry for what I said.I'll be good for now on, I promise.
At the word "birds" at the beginning, Richard plays the incorrect chord; Karen looks over at him at that point. This song illustrates how hard the Carpenters tried to duplicate their records when they performed their songs live.
when I was a child three things seamed to laste for ever in Mexico City: Carpenter´s Close to You, Ryan O´nell and Ali Mc Grow´s Love Story and Bikers movie Born Loosers. Only Close to you remains.
It's astounding to me that it's nearly impossible to find any notes that Karen didn't hit in any of the live YouTube postings. How could anyone sing so close to perfection?!
I agree with you, her live performance of "Superstar" is the best I ever saw. I have the whole video, but not that one song. She also does an incredible version of "Rainy Days and Mondays" on that also.
JP5466 Thanks. This is so good and so close to the record I was wondering how "live" this really was. Your comment, plus some more obvious deviations from the record at about the 2:00 mark confirmed for me that it was live. When was this? - she seems pretty thin here. What a waste of a great talent. Not the most powerful voice ever but one of the most gorgeous sounding ones !!!!!!!!!!!
I believe this was 1971. Before the Carpenters' appearance on the national scene, in her late teens (at 17?), I believe, Karen went on her first weight-loss diet (In 1967 she was 17). Richard Carpenter has stated he thinks she became anorexic in 1975. Contrary to popular belief, Karen did not die emaciated, but weighed 108 pounds.
this is what is known as a 'semi-live' performance. all the instrumentalists and vocalists are live, but they are playing along with the original record, as it has on it the string arrangement, which they could not reproduce live as they had no orchestra!
Perfect vocals..no autotune..no backing track..no dj.
Music.
