  • sorry i hate to be that guy but my ranger fired right with very minimal tuning afterwards and agree with dtpchilli4life ALWAYS do installs at tdc ALWAYS...and i also did a 400 sbc with a sm465 and 9"rear end...but i do like the kid that jumped that was good.....one last thing why was everyone running aroung like they were on pinks or something chill out a little overall ok

  • if you slap in a 302 you need a new tranny right? which means you dont' have 4x4, espectially if you pull it out of a crown vic or something, am i rght?

  • Shouldve timed it to tdc before attempting to start it and double checked that.. Backfires could hurt.

  • I was looking to do a v8. which one woud u reccomend? 351 or 302? I was looking for an engine which there is tons of aftermarket support. i want fuel injection............put a turbo on it. looking for 350-450whp! do u think a 302 on boost?

  • @700whpfocus A 302 swap is easier to do since you don't have to make custom motor mounts. I think it would be cool if you stroked a 302 to a 347 and turbo'd it.

  • 351w can handle alot more hp. their stronger and plus you would have more cubic inches to help you get your power goals. just do some reasearch on a ford lightning forum. those guys turbo 351w all the time.

  • i have a 1994 ranger splash with the 4.0 ohv motor. i am thinking of swapping a v8 or a v6 in it. i would love to put the 2011 ford mustang 3.8v6 in it. it puts out 305hp.

    iwould like to put a more up to date motor in the truck. any suggestions? i wanna make the swap as easy as possible. where do i begin?

  • @700whpfocus I'm not really sure man. Try researching online if anyone has done any kinds of motor swaps like that befrore. I only know about swapping 351's and 302's into Rangers.

  • Not really I guess. He had to make custom motor mounts and headers. Besides that he had to bend back this one lip on the firewall so the bell housing would clear.

  • Back then it had 241rwhp and ran 12.8 @ around 101 or 102mph floating the valves. Now it has 320rwhp and runs 11.7 @ 116mph. At one time it made 340rwhp and ran 11.4.

  • Next time use a mustang II C4, Headman shorty headers, Oil filter relocation kit, and pre made mounts from James Duff. Makes the swap as easy as dropping in another 4 cylinder or 6 banger. You can use an econoline van 302 oil pan from the junk yard and you wont need a dual sump. You still have to roll the trans tunnel seem a tad but not much. Then just relocate the trans X member and your in business.

  • AND..... before you start it up next time make sure its not 180 degrees out on timing so you dont blow the intake off :-)

  • seems like the timing is way off.. How can you guys say ohh monkeys fucking a football. This was probly an early startup after the rebuild. Im sure when you've rebuilt a motor it didn't start up and run proper without some tweaking and timing adjustments.. I think its a sick ass ranger myself.

  • @Fireheart528 - I don't know if the buick 350 is similar to a chevy 350 but i would think after boring a 302 to a 347 or 357 (unless it was a 351) you'd pretty much be using a similar engine minus the manufacturer.

  • nice little truck. im helpin a bud do a 92 the same way, just with a 302. he saw my 289 aerostar and had to have a small block in his truck! question- what did you do about the oil filter, the 96 explorer 5.0 has a turned adapter will that work in the older chassis? or do we need a relocation kit?

  • I'm not sure what you need to do about the oil filter on your friends Ranger. On my brothers Ranger he had to use a relocation kit.

  • thats what i thought. the steering box is in the way and we didnt want to convert it to rack and pinion. i saw the vids of it runnin 11's what heads did you get, gt40?

  • My brother got AFR heads with 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves.

  • go find the stock filter, then take a while in ur parts store matching for a shorter filter. all that needs to be the same is the thread, and the size of the oring

  • Oh yea it just takes the FL300, thats what i use on my aerostar. i have to wedge it in to get it to fit. I was thinking of using the explorer cause its also a cooler.

  • well i build race cars and i dont think that is a lot of work done to that motor tho . ive put 302's in rangers and they will run 12.40 with a slightly mild motor's in them but it is still a kool lill truck man .

  • nice truck sound good i got a 86 with a big block ford racing 460 tubed with a 12 point roll cage and i didnt spend 9 grand tho i did it for like 3,500 not including the motor and trans. the motor was 9,000 and all the work that i did to it .

  • Yeah, if you don't count the motor and transmission, it cost my brother between 1 or 2 grand.

  • It's a 351 windsor bored out to a 357. It's got 1970 mustang heads with 1.94 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves. A .532 lift cam with 224 duration I believe. It has an edlebrock rpm airgap intake manifold and a holley 750cfm double pumper carburetor. With that setup it pulled 241rwhp on the dyno.

    Right now, my brother is putting a cam with more duration in it and some AFR heads with bigger intake valves. With the new setup it should pull around 300rwhp.

  • Yeah 351w are good engines. You can stroke them out to 408 and make a lot of horse power. My friends mustang has a 408 and it ran 10.09 all motor.

  • Yeah that was including the exhuast, transmission, and everything else it took to get it to fit. My brother got the engine from a guy at his work who bought it off the internet from some company down in California.

  • It cost around 9 grand(not counting purchasing the truck) to do what my brother did but that's because it's set up for drag racing. If you just wanted to do a swap, you could do it for about 6 or 7 grand maybe.
