" youre 25, you dont have to listen to Journey!" really cracked me up! But then again, I actually love Journey. Hm, I wonder if that means Im a hipster, really hope not :/
And I would so want to see the episode with evil Ultraman!
If you think that people like Kant didn't rub shoulders with poets and artists than you do not fully understand world history and philosophy and the inspirations behind world thought that propells Western history.
I would suggest that anyone watching this should research deeper than Brad Warner's writing if they want to find out about Zen Buddhism. It is false advertising that this gentleman should call himself a " Zen master" since he hasn't done any study with an acknowledged master, or been given any lineage of study. The real people do exist. So
wake up, folks at Geek TV. There is an old African saying : A log can float in the river for twenty years but that doesn't make it an alligator.
LOL. He isn't just a 'punk rock ethics specialist'. He's an ordained Buddhist Monk. Oi! I love his books. Aside from religion, he just has positive and realistics ideas about life and people.
P.S. Marilyn Manson IS considered to be highly intelligent and a great business-man; Just cause an orange looks like a banana... doesn't mean it's a banana.
one's musical style does not equate to one's philisophical depth, Marilyn Manson is a crazy freak and ranks up there with one of the more intelligent members of our current society.
Stating a fact is not akin to idolization, it is a more common fact that he is a much more prolific thinker than he is given credit for. You have to give credit do where credit is do. They thought the same about people who thought the world was round. Chew on that for awhile.
In the length of Milleniums, a few hundread years is comparitivley short, study world history and the copernican revolution and you'll find it hasn't been that long.
I already acknowledged on my own that Marilyn Manson's obviously a thoughtful guy, but you seem to be suggesting that he's some kind of real visionary. I mean, you compared him to those first explorers and early astronomers who contemplated our REAL place in the universe!
Can you link me to some of Manson's lectures, books etc? His newsletter? I want to give him the credit he's "do."
The information you are looking for is out there, you just need to search the net. Yes I am saying that like any other person outside of the norm who has challenged the status quoe throughout history , which has caused society to become aware of it's real place, he is the one within the art and music world today that has had a impact on society for the past 20 years. Early visionaries were just as effected by heretic occult artists like manson more than you seem to be aware of.
You're clearly just some Manson fanboy. Just because the guy likes to fly in the face of Christianity and traditional gender roles, etc, etc, does not make him some counterculture revolutionary. He's a pop act, pure and simple.
Oh, and I'm not looking for the information -- my challenge to you was to present me with something he's written or done that measures up to the standards of the people you've mentioned (amongst your spelling errors).
The sad fact is that your statements only reflect that you are unaware of the occult influence on society throughout history, i.e. Benjamin Franklin and the Hellfire Club , Giordano Bruno. You are a grown man search for yourself I'm not your babysitter. To argue points such as spelling is trivial to the arguemnet. Do the research because you are simply wrong.
I'm aware that there has been influence from the occult throughout the centuries. History is one of my favourite subjects.
And yes, I'm an excellent researcher, you're right. But seriously -- I'm not asking you for a fifteen-thousand word thesis on Marilyn Manson here. I'm only asking that you to direct me towards the best starting point that you know of to give some credibility to your statements. No babysitting...no work...just an url link or ISBN number or something. Easy!
To state that you are aware of the occult influence on society through out history but can't recognize the Post Modern Nietsche( however you spell it) Nihilistic Cosmology( something a lover of history would be aware of) put forth by Manson in his music and art is highly dubious at best, again research is up to you, it's just as easy as you say, to surf the net. Your ignorance is your responsibility.
this guy seemed smart at first when he made those deprecating remarks about journey and 80s hair glamour rock... but then he said in preference to that he chose these mohawekd british guys screeching into microphones... and then I realized he was one of those white liberal hipsters who take up zen as a cool hobby to be different from the more athletic brand of white people
I'm a Zen monk, and also exactly Brad's age, a product of the same middle class North American culture, and share many of his life experiences. Brad's book "Hardcore Zen" is one of the best Zen books I've read. You'll notice that he's uncomfortable with the "master" label.
All religions have wisdom it's how it is presented that matters.
I was read all the christian stories as a kid (Noah's arch , adam+ eve , all the other ones) but they weren't presented to me as MORE than stories no more true or real than peter pan or Archie comics.
Buddhism is presented very differently here in the west than it is in the east do some research.
Thats exactly how it should be presented. A piece of ancient literature like the stories of hercules or achilles. At what point does a "story" qualify as a "religion" and automatically acquire worth in terms of "wisdom"? When enough people are convinced its true? Thats the only difference between fictional stories and religions; people belief they are true.
most religious texts are not just entertaining stories, they have a purpose beyond modern ideas of sales and entertainment to enlighten the reader the the true nature of life through devoted contemplation and meditation. from lao tsu to teh gospel of matthew there is a lot to be learned deep between the pages as a manifestation of truth that exists universally in everybody
"Manifestation of truth that exists universally in everyone". You are starting to sound like this clown on this video! Truth that exists in everyone, what does that mean! I can read you typing but I don't see you communicating anything. What have you learned after reading "deep between the pages" (thats some deep neverending story stuff) and "contemplating" (assuming sitting just on the floor and doing nothing) and meditating.
there is a constant struggle to communicate the essentially singular experiences of our life to others. from the bible i have learned the metaphor of jesus as the son of man, & in Matthew it says a jesus quote like "those who want to follow me, let them take up their own cross and walk in my footsteps." from teh disparate arrays of buddhist doctrine i have learned the 4 noble truths: life is suffering which can be overcome by the dissolution of the ego. from teh Tao i have learned to levitate
The statement "All religions have wisdom" is unverifiable nonsense; its a fuzzy, vague absolute that you present as if its some sort of universal. indisputable axiomatic ad oculos. Well its not.
Oh i agree, Im not the most articulate person but, religious text as data do contain useful information. You can read Mein Kampf disagree with most or all of it and still learn quite a lot.
But i really have no desire to argue any special world view.
Well that depends on what you describe as useful. Literature is for entertainment; i suppose that can be useful. So, okay you have proven that the reason that people write is so that others can read them and gain either some entertainment or some form of insight, be it "correct" or not. Great. You are my hero.
Lol its just somehow I doubt a "punk rock ethics specialist" sitting at a table with kant, nietschze, plato, and moore would have anything insightful to add or say.
"About zen and how to live their lives" bla bla bla more people trying to convince people with superstitious crap. I could learn from your mediocre life of cliche' problems in the modern day world? Failed marriage, failed job, failed sex, whatever? I... don't think so.I thought it was humorous how he described it as "real" &"true" and we heard a few notes. Mindboggling vague and uninformative. Wow he knows what is "real" and discovered "truth"? No wonder he is on the fast track to more vagueness.
Does anyone really take you seriously... or is that something that you are not interested in? Do you actually feel that you are sincerely involved in zen?

Why ? Cause its a subjective exper that takes one into zen and if one is not there, one wld not know.
Sorry, no math equations to prove this stuff.
But anyone could get into zen - just be grace/peace/mindful and loving to all there is.
