I remember hearing this song late one winter moonlit night 1971 on KWKI Radio in Kansas City. Marilyns voice was so beautiful, dark and mystifying as I looked out of my window at the night shadows cast on the snow. Truly a beautiful haunting classic...Yeah
I bought this as a '45 and had no idea what it meant but it sure was cool! Must have been betwitched by this gorgeous voice or the interesting melody!
One of the most poetic soundtracks that Marilyn had ever sung. People don't realize that this group still has a following because of the impact that they made on music.
I understand that they still do music in various commununities, be it secular or nonsecular. Any information on the locations I can be reached at dwillis2200@yahoo.com. You are one of a kind group.
Couple of things: 1) I love the part that's edited out, where Ms. McCoo/Mrs. Davis sings what's essentially the chorus right after the 2nd instrumental interlude and said: "And touches the heart, in MANY directions..." (emphasis, Ms. McCoo's, and beautifully done), 2) God bless Mr. and Mrs. Davis for their Christian witness now, 3) Ms. McCoo was neither Aretha Franklin, nor Diana Ross, nor Sade, nor Anita Baker, nor Aaliyah-her (and this group's) place was unique. We won't see another.
@Majikart ..i was sixteen...a sophmore in high school...and you're right...that spring was great...not sure if betcha by golly came out that spring but i betcha it did!
Although she didn't ultimately enjoy the kind of long lasting success she should have, I wouldn't say Marilyn McCoo was under appreciated. While she might not be a huge name anymore, her voice is still considered among the all time greats.
I was getting gas the other day and this song was on the speaker...I was blown away. my all time favorite song (first saw her sing it on "The Ed Sullivan Show")...
The last time I heard this song was on AM radio when I was 16, a sophomore in high school (and suffering through geometry class.) I only caught the "angles and lines and circles" lyrics (and didn't know who the singer was) so I always thought of it as some weird obscure song, probably sung by a female nerd with coke-bottle-bottom glasses rhapsodizing about her love of mathematics.
Anyway, thanks for posting this and setting me straight (Marilyn McCoo was ANYTHING but a bespectacled nerd!)
I like the mellow mood of this song with the bass and trumpets. Her voice is very warm and pure. She doesn't sing in a throaty gospel style that a lot of black female artists are known for, although I'm sure she could do it if she wanted to. She never embellishes her vocals. Always straight, pure and direct. She's a damn good singer. A singing goddess. I also love watching these old performances. They were like videos with an emphasis on singing and not acting.
this is an incredible song and Marilyn's efforts really shine for this rendition. the song tells a great story for love. the summer of 1971 was sure given a rise in this music. thanks to lightzings for getting this effort posted..
I keep commin back to this one, powerfull memories of my childhood. She brought many wonderfull songs to us back then!
Just a thought i keep having is I would love to see Thia Megia the16 year old Idol contestant do this song. If she could nail it I would bet all tree judges would tear up as i think I would also. Well just a thought but hey I'm a dreamer and I like dreaming. And I love Music. Man its great to alive!
This is an excellent song (and one of my favorites) by the fifth dimension. If only Isaac Hayes did a version of this song, maybe back in 1971-'72, with that cool, sexy, midnight soul sound that he had, stretched it into a 15-20 minute song, with a orchestrated, brilliant, instrumental introduction and sexy females back-ups (like he did with "the look of love"). If Isaac would've recorded, "Love's,lines.....", it would've been bad(good) as hell!!. But anyway, great song, and a great sound by the 5th.

i love this song. it has a mysterious feel...a lot like when you are in love...confusing...connecting..interchanging. i think marilyn does a great job on a challanging song.
Another great song from the beautiful and too long deceased mind of Laura Nyro. The visual setting and Marilyn's enunciation are supurb! She looks and sounds both strong and vulnerable at the same time. If you know, what TV production was this excerpted from?
I just wanted to say that I think people my age who grew up with such wonderful talent as Marilyn took this great music for granted, now that we are older, don't we really appreciate it like never before? God bless The Fifth Dimension and the angelic voice of such a classy lady!
She is gorgeous, classy and talented. I always loved te voice and style of Marilyn McCoo. There is no talent like this anymore these days. Even the magnificent orchestration is something you no longer hear in today's music.
Like, POW!!! BAM!!! CRASH!!! SWI-I-I-SH-H-H!!! Man, I've been dashed to earth, and then afterwrds sent soaring to the heavens by Marilyn's voice and presence before, but this song stirs things in me that I can't describe, which is unsual for those who know me.
Amazing theme ain't it, melding platonic themes in popular music, which the prudish fossil of classical music insist couldn't be done. Thankfully, they're long dead!!!
This and "If I Could Reach You", are my all time favorite Marilyn songs. They really showcase the range of her wonderful voice. Although this song is a little confusing, that great voice still sells it!
This song was a gift for the Class of 1971, those of us who graduated high school that year. Especially where it debuted sometime in the month of April as I recall. If you are my age and listened to lots of music, you know what I'm talking about. We all took this song for granted back then. Now this song comes crashing back at us in waves of nostalgia as we ponder where the last 40 years have gone!
@Starlifter88 I so agree, Karen & Marilyn are both--were both--angelsw among us--truly God's Gift to us. Each in her own way has--had a voice we'll never, ever forget. Gorgeous ladies. Wolfsky9
I LOVE me some 5TH DIMENSION!!!!!!!!!!! I grew up on their music, which is ironic because I was born in 1991, but my dad played their songs like their was no tomorrow.
Very Beutiful love song by marilyn McCoo, and the 5th Dimension I love her sweet voice!! this song on the 5th Dimension album of the same title ("love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes") originally released on Bell Records!!! Bell Records became Arista Records in 1975, when Clive Davis took over the label.
I remember my first conscious attraction was to either my
2nd or 3rd Grade teacher Ms Moore (long straight dark hair) & if it wasn't her it was definitely Marilyn. This might also explain my love of ~talented~ Women vocalists!
One of Marilyn's all-time best vocals, ever. Listen closely, & hear how she enunciates every word, clearly, with class & soul. Oh Marilyn, you were the hottest woman to ever step up to a mic & put a voice to song! Summer, '71, & Timeless. Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 She's awesome for sure!..Love the way words music and voice are combining so well leading up to the final flourish ...I figure Barbara Streisand, as well, could have made something great of it....
@Wolfsky9: Dear Wolfsky9, you described that SO well...I, as a singer didn't think anyone black could sing that proper with SO much SOUL. Some may criticize me for that statement. But I feel the way I feel. I feel soul in most all music but this just blew my mind the first time I heard HER VERSION
Just imagine how many teenagers and "20 somethings" that have never ever heard this song in their entire lives. Kinda makes me feel that they have missed something in their lives. This song is timeless and can be enjoyed by everyone who loves music. This song oozes with nostalgia for someone like me who remembers it like it was yesterday, back in the Spring of '71.
Try closing your eyes (eliminate distraction) and key in on how masterfully (very delicate) she anunciates each word, like, right down to how she issues each vowel and consonant; and how she stresses them at certain times...this is the hallmark of a truly great vocalist. It's also true evidence of singing directly from the personal experience - especially the "stressing" of particular parts of the lyrics, and other things, like when she sounds "breathy"...almost like being out of breath.
Right...and this was not an easy song to sing because they actually sped it up *for commercial reasons*....the writer of the song *Dorothea Joyce* said that she wrote it in a slower tempo.
This is a great song. I heard this song one night, years ago and as many times I had heard it, for the first time I really heard it and what the words were really meaning. I tell you, MsTexas73, Marilyn McCoo, has never truly received the props that she have deserved over the years. The fact that her voice and her talent is so underrated should be a crime against the music world. have you been reading about how people are walking out of Britany Spears concerts in Australia because of lipsyncing?
No one would ever walk out of a Marliyn McCoo concert, because of lipsyncing, because that woman can sing, plus she is more beautiful, more sexier, and without a doubt, more talented.
Yep!!! I had all there albums as a kid and this one I still crank up on my stereo to this day. I saw them in the early 80's at a Festival and My friend was called up on stage to sing...Funny
The calculus of Love entwined in this masterfully performed song by Marilyn McCoo Davis. Complexity woven into enchantment. I Love it - perhaps her best!
This is one of Marilyn's best vocal efforts ever, & one of my all-time fav's of hers; it's impossible for me to imagine anyone--well, maybe Babs Streisand--doing this beautiful song as well as Marilyn did. I was so in Love with this gorgeoue woman, & this song shows that voice so well. You'll always be #1 with me, Marilyn! Wolfsky9
Marilyn McCoo was gorgeous.............what a voice.......talent like that only comes around just so often...........certainly hasn't in the past 20 years.....
All you mid-50s type like me, doesn't this song take you back to the Spring of 1971? This particular song defined the month of April for me towards the end of my senior year in high school! I feel for anyone who can't remember oldies such as these to take them back to their teenage years. God bless the wonderful never to be forgotten music of our childhood and teenage years!!
Oh God yes, I know exactly what you're talking about; Whenever I hear this song it takes me back to Spring of 1971, iwas 15 when that song was played on the radio and I get a little teary eyed whenenver I hear it.
Thanks for posting this video! it's a great blast from the past and a reminder of how talented and beautiful Marilyn McCoo was. I don't know if I wore this album out when It was released but I sure as hell tried. No one before or since could caress a melody the way that lady could and still can.
In an age when so many pop singers seem to do their best to sound alike it's a real pleasure to hear someone who was, and is, unique.
I've always wondered how much competition there was between Marilyn and Florence, what with Marilyn getting nearly all the lead vocals. Anyone know some inside scoop?
Love this Fifth Dimension song...! Wish that Marilyn had performed it live for their TV special instead of lip-syc'ing. Does anyone have a live version?
I remember hearing this song late one winter moonlit night 1971 on KWKI Radio in Kansas City. Marilyns voice was so beautiful, dark and mystifying as I looked out of my window at the night shadows cast on the snow. Truly a beautiful haunting classic...Yeah

I assume that since they have just celebrated their 40th anniversary, Billy's answer to Marilyn's question was the right one.
THEHUNGRYVEGETARIAN 2 years ago
That was actually the lead in to the next segment *Dionne Warwick's second song*
Billy first says, "I am."
Then Marilyn asked, "What about GIRL singers?"
Billy: "You are Buhbie."
MArilyn: "What about Dionne Warwick?" And she gives him that look that's CLEARLY baiting him.
But he doesn't bite...."Well, she's EVERYBODY'S favorite. But YOU are MY favorite."
And Marilyn basically tells him good save and calls him a Smooth Talker and again gives him that knowing look.
