Your embouchure has to be PERFECT to play the piccolo. It's pitched so high that the lowest c is played like a mid-octave c on a regular flute. It's nuts, I can barely play one.
Please, can somebody tell me why is Mr Davies (that is a marvellous flute player) that hold the piccolo lesson insted the more qualified principal piccolo player? Thanks
HotStew, you really don't have a clue. When a wood piccolo is recorded with a mic so close, you'll hear lots of partials that might seem to you like lower octaves. If you were to hear him at the proper distance and proper volume, you wouldn't hear those.
Or were you REALLY confused by the piece?
Didn't you realize that he's deliberately alternating high and lower octaves in many of the "fast notes" sections? He even explains that in his narration.
My "remarks makes" perfect sense. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, how about asking me to explain instead of bashing me because you don't understand?
If you think the Principle Flautist from the London Symphony Orchestra is not good, then post a video of yourself playing a piccolo better than him before making comments.
That's PHYSICS! come on, guys! Because of the short body and narrow bore size of the piccolo, up close, when playing high notes on the piccolo, it tends to sound like a crushed octave. Really, those are the harmonics that give the piccolo its sound. Control of the harmonics is beyond the player, as it deals with the length of the instrument, and the material it is made from.
Oh right. Well I hope you get to go to Carnegie Hall to correct him in person. I'm glad we have people like you to point out mistakes like this. Have u uploaded your piccolo audition yet. I'd love to see it
I'm sorta torn, I am a piccolo player, but also a flautist. I am at amus level (got an a in my 8th grade exam) and was just wondering if I could have some advice on which I would have a better chance in.
lol, that note that you talk of is a semiquaver, so it wouldn't really be the end of the world if he got it out of tune, but it's perfectly in tune anyway, so... point nullification to you.
However, I do agree with you in that he should stick with the flute. He keeps splitting those bloody notes, and it's awful to listen to.
i was thinking the same thing. there's no way the 2nd and 3rd notes played in bar 105are the same; the second one sounds closer to an A! But he gets it right when he plays it again, slower.. but mistakedly refers to this as bar 106.
Also: at 1:49,the first note of the Allegro vivace, bar 98, is supposed to be a TOP G#, not a middle one.
And at 3:11, three middle F's are played at the beginning of bar 58, when there are meant to be only two. This extra note changes the bar to 7/16!
THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER. BUT I LOVE MY MOM SO I AM NOT TAKING ANY CHANCES.If you don't copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours.
I remember playing the piccolo (while was normally a flute player) for full orchestra in high school. It was difficult; a lot more difficult than the flute. And then when our performance was over, it took me a month to re-adjust back to the flute.
However, I'm sure there has got to be some great piccolo players out there. Surely they will tackle this and execute something beyond our imagination!
You have to get used to it and then it's as easy (or as hard) as the normal flute. Only smaller...
The piccolo is high, yes, but it's only too high when the componist says so. And I really hate this, especially practicing in a small room up to c5...
@IMonteCarloSS1987 Wow nice come back, loser!!!

No disrespect, but piccolo playing is not your forte.
Whenever you played moderately fast notes, the tone crushed down to the lower octave quite often.

No disrespect but your remarks makes no sense.

Yes, there is: fortississimo.
The same pattern goes for ppp, pianississimo

ok, you know, i asked wikipedia and found out: in english you call ppp pianississimo, but this is not the case in
German (and possibly other languages/country, too, I can't tell)
dear old GERMAN wikipedia says:
"ppp (pianissimo piano, piano pianissimo or pianissimo possibile),"
oh well...learned a lesson today, both of us! Let's lay down our swords, TRUCE! :)
Go in peace and enjoy the heavenly music!

@Concertmaster3 in Finland it's piano pianissimo

There is no term for three f's. You have forte and fortissimo.
