What they did on buffy was basically shoot the scene with the actor wearing no prosthetics, then again with the actor wearing the prosthetics. Then they basically did a simple "morph effect" going from 1 shot to the other. The technique used in this is completely different.

i think he used liquify also on the teeth, but he didnt really change his facial features much other than teeth and wide black eyes
