Is this from his show? I thought WPIX re-used every extant tape so none survive. Who owns the copyright on this, who removed the sound? Is this from the movie?
I met Clay in the mid 1960's when he appeared at an Elizabeth, NJ Lions Club event. He had dinner at our house and I have an autographed photo of him somewhere. Great guy.
What a great name for a R&R DJ~~~ CLAY COLE! Sorta like the perfect Baseball name~~~ Mickey Mantle. Black & White TV, oh yeeeah! But I seem to remember the CCS being on Wednesday nights in NYC area? Did I see The Cascades sing "Rhythm Of The Rain" and The Classics do "Till Then"...?
When Clay called his guest "Dallas," I first thought it might be Dallas Frazier, who, among other things, wrote several big hits. However, at the end of the clip, Clay seems to identify him as Dallas Hunter, who had just released "Red Lips" on ABC Paramount. However, a quick scan of easily-available data did not reveal any information on such a release.
Hello everyone!! He went by the name Dallas Huston.. Ther is no mention of him in the Rock and Roll "historical documents". Hopefully Clay will chime in. As he reads this all the time.
His name is indeed Dallas Houston. The record promoted here is by a group called the Rock-A-Fellas who featured Dallas Houston on that 45. The single came out in 1958, so this must be a pretty early document of the Clay Cole Show. I don't need to mention that I hope that hopefully there will pop up more from his show - despite the fact that his tapes were erased.
murray the k's "the world" opened in roosevelt field in the spring of 1966 (we went opening night and and lots of nights after that). but it only lasted 9 months.did someone else buy it and keep that name after that? i don't recall.
I absolutely loved the Clay Cole Show! I remember seeing some of his "regulars" like Linda Scott, Sam Cooke, etc. I always thought he was so good looking, too! (crush crush crush)
All aspects of the induction process are handled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. It can be reached at 1290 Avenue of the Americas, Second Floor, New York, NY 10104. The Foundation does not have e-mail available.
chestnuts - you are correct. The Beatles were never on the Clay Cole Show "live" - However they were on the same show with the Rolling Stones via satellite from Ch 11's sister-station in Chicago WGN. The program was called "Clay Cole Presents The Beatles vs the Rolling Stones."
I read that channel 11 erased all of the shows except for this one (a common practice at the time). A real shame; I would have liked to see the Beatles and Stones footage, as well as the Motown special.
love seeing clay cole. one of my favorite shows from back in the day. i believe marvin gaye was one of the last artist i saw on his show before it went off the air.
Clay Cole eventually did get to cut a record, I believe. The lyrics went something like "I'm over her now, I'm over there now, I'm a hipty-dipty dayo." Silly song but I bet it made it onto the charts in NYC.
I am overwhelmed that so many of you remember - and care! I must admit, I get a kick out of all this attention. Thank you to my pal, Rocketryman for finding and sharing these clips. He's talked me into my own website, so one will be up and running soon. Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to seek me out and find me...this is un-bee-lieve-able! - Clay Cole
one of my greatest memories as a kid was watching the clay cole show on wpix just before they ran chiller theater. so now when i hear a song from the mid sixties iget a chill for 2 reasons. hopefully more footage pops up!
Clay, loved you back in the '60s. Always thought you were cute and funny! I'm now (2/14/09) listening to you in an interview with Mark Simone on his radio show in NY. Really enjoying it.
Man Clay Cole! I guess I was about 10 or 11 in Bayport, Long Island. If memory serves correctly, I believe Bobby Vinton was lying on an "army cot" singing "(Mr.?) Lonely"-Am I right? Thanks! Are you able to post some more?
Dear Rocketryman, I just the read your post of the history-what a bummer to say the least-but thanks much for the post and please give our thanks to Mr. Cole for his wonderful show.K.O'D.

Clay Cole passed away Saturday 12/18/2010
I spoke to him Friday. We had a good conversation. I forgot what it was we were laughing about. We did that often.
When I heard the reports coming in, I could not believe it. I called Clay hoping he would answer the phone. Then I found out it was true.
I'm going to miss him. I already do.
Mr. Clay Cole, Thank you for being my friend.

I used to love that show. Chuck McCann, another WPIX-11 mainstay, used to guest on the show frequently and they would do some great comedy bits.

didn't chuck mccann do a takeoff on "Little Orphan Annie" He'd dressup like her.

Also, Clay needs to be indoctrinated into the rock and roll hall of fame. Lets do our part and write them!
