  • As a Christian, I love this powerful song. I can understand why those with Finnish affection might decry the "stealing" of one of their prized national songs (not Anthem according to Wiki). Do know however, that the lyrics to this song predate (1752 translated in 1855)Sibelius' composition of the music and have been important to the Christian tradition for centuries.

  • 3 minutes & 50 seconds of butchering of Finlandia ladies & gentlemen

  • wow...just wow...why ruin an epic song by making it simple as hell & about something as awful & discusting as religion. Sibelius would be ashamed.

  • I have stumbled all my life; be still my soul. still searching for my higher power

I love this song, brings me back down to what life is all about,

  • Scripture reference correction: The reference to the quoted verse in Psalm (27:34) is actually Psalm 37:24. Great video/song... greatly ministered to me. Thanks

  • I love Nicole Sponberg's singing voice. She has this husky voice that touches. I cried the first time I ever heard this song on my CD and I have three Selah CD's.

  • Sad how Jean Sibelius' beautiful original melody has been arranged to something so rough and simple as this. And to know how the lyrics I grew up with (and which fit the mood of the melody perfectly), about freedom and nation's rising from the ashes after a war, are changed into something religious is just beyond my comprehension. I'm out of words...

  • it's so beautiful, so calm, this is an inspirational rendition , fantastic

  • The next time anger, frustration and pain gets to me... i will be right here.. just listening. and I know my soul will be calmed... just like now. :) Thank you Father.

  • WOW THIS SONG IS POWERFUL!!!!!!!!!JESUS IS POWERFUL!!!!!!!!!

  • @sweetpatience54 Yes! And Sibelius is no slacker either!

  • Who needs religion? People just need to believe : )

A very soul stirring piece of heavenly music...

  • @HopeWithPandora You have to have something to believe IN...that's why we need religion.

  • People have to have something to believe IN. That's why we need religion.

  • @thespia I do understand...and no criticism meant in my remark. Some people also have religion...but do not believe : ) I have a strong and wholesome faith and thank you for posting this Hymn...the words come to my mind and heart frequently.

With Peace to you and good day.

  • @thespia I just wanted to clarify....it's not religion we need, it's a relationship with God where we confide in him, ask him what to do next, ask for good things and plead on behalf of others that is of value. Religion has resulted in many wars, in separation, in hatred and division. It's our relationship with our Father the creator who loves us that makes us whole, healed, caring and with hope for the future.

  • CHILLZ:)

  • Today, midst the increasing tidal waves of angry voices and hurricanes, be still my soul and "...worship Him that made heaven and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." (Rev 14:7) Peace, be still. Thank you, God.

  • @shalimarsgirl shalimar, FL?

  • @thetinman2000 Shalimar perfume made in France.

  • @shalimarsgirl Ah, much bettah, I'm sure

  • The scripture verse listed at 2:29 should read Psalm 37:24. :)

  • Finlandia Hymni is SOOOOOOO much better

  • Thank you!!!!

  • <3 praise Him forever

  • Just Beautiful!

  • Beautiful song but it sounds just like "I Then Shall Live" by the Gaither Vocal Band

  • @ybernard97 The music is a symphony named “Finlandia”, written in 1900 by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Subsequently, several people have put lyrics to the music; “Be Still My Soul” and “I Then Shall Live” are two.

  • @morriswilburn Not quite correct. While you are correct that there are multiple songs that use the Finlandia tune, the words to this song were written well before the Finlandia in 1752. Many of the other songs were also written prior to the tune being written. Small difference, but still a difference.

  • So very Beautiful !

  • Hey , i was at the saleh consert firday april 1st ! 2011 i was so astonished ! my mom was tods teacher i am beth her daughter ! i lvoe you guys and the music spoke to my heart firday

  • This is so beautiful xx

  • Listening to this song, I feel like I'm nestling in the the arms of God; ike a lullaby to a baby! Beautiful!

  • Thanks for posting this video, it is beautiful.

  • psalm 37:24

  • "palms 24:34" doesn't exist, however the verse you are referring to is 37:24, might wanna....sorry to be the bearer of bad news

  • Thanks for airing. I needed this tonite.

  • Beautiful Nicole! My family played a recording of me singing this for my mom's memorial and it was very comforting.

  • people got off topic of the song, this is a very beautiful arrangement of the Finlandia Hymn. Thanks for posting.

  • @cellobabe and btw, it's the sixth of dec... Happy independence day, Finland! :)

  • Sibelius - Finlandia Hymni.. Nightwish of course have this on their shows!

  • To all "christians" : Come out of babylon (modern day christianity). WE have inherited lies from our fathers. You are fooling yourself if you believe you have peace with Elohim. We have turned back to the false gods through lies taught by false teachers and those who believe those lies and teach their brethren those same lies. Fear Him and repent. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. The whole lump (body of believers) have become defiled and unclean. Come out and touch not the unclean

  • So you obviously believe in evolution mr shortstackstar, so let me say that you have obviously not studied the subject at all.my response was to your reply to someone elses comment which mentioned nothing about yourband or spoofing the song. Are youAlso spoofing Islamic material also or just Christian music, no , I didn't think so.funny about that eh??

  • @samwgdavis now why would you say that? i don't believe in evolution, because i just don't know. the only thing i know is what not to believe. and that's christianity. it's obviously flawed to those who don't have their eyes and ears shut to the truth. like you.

i am only spoofing christianity. i have never been exposed to islamic belief so for all i know, they could be right, although i doubt it.

what i have seen from christianity was enough to drive me away though

  • Beautiful...thank you! ♥

  • deep calls to deep, my soul thirsts for You O Living God and it is only in You, that my soul can be still, come Lord Jesus and indwell me

  • Makes my heart so full....love this song.

  • Thanks for this anointing song and video.

  • I loooooove! totaly! it does uplift my soul, always, and takes me to the feet of Jesus.

  • lmdalida@yahoo.com

  • Awesome!

  • I feel so down today that this song came as a soothing balm to my soul. Never watched this video before. The presence of our God our Father and the reassuring hand of Jesus touched me as I listened to it. The Holy Spirit came and brought peace to my soul again. Thank you.

  • @borneoorchid christianity is such crap. are you listening to what you are saying? it's sooooo corny :D LOL

  • @shortstackstar Obviously you are searching for something in your life. Otherwise, you wouldn't be listening to a song like Be Still My Soul. I hope you find the peace you are searching for.

  • @SueLWilliams the reason i was listening to this song, you condescending christian, is because it's what my band is doing an athiest spin on. by the way, have you read the bible?? murder and incest, and these are supposed to be the good guys! CRAP

  • @shortstackstar If you really believe that, then what are you doing on this site? Feel free to visit one of the many atheist sites......while youre doing that we will pray for you that your eyes would be opened to the truth.

  • @samwgdavis did you hear a word i said? i am watching this video because my band is spoofing it!

and as to your "truth" comment, why do you think i'm an atheist?? christianity is crap...i'd love to see what you have to say about all the incest and murder the biblical good guys commited

  • @shortstackstar jaja don´t you found funny that christianity is probably the religion based in more lies than any other and their priests are the complete opposite of their doctrine but christians still comment in such a pretty way jajajajaja

  • @SicopataRxx i know, i find it hilarious that such a "big" religion as christianity is based on such a flimsy STORY as the bible...i mean, think about it? what, God just put an evil tree in his perfect garden and one of his i-can't-do-anything-wrong perfect angels just went bad and suddenly God lost the power to take his own angel out?? it's all flaws and bad plots from the beginnning!

  • @shortstackstar Like I said to Shortstack. The New Testament is the most credible and reliable ancient document known to man. There are also secular writings that collaborate the events of those days. You should really read up on it instead of repeating rumor and silly things you don't really know about. You are entitled to your opinion but do a little research before you knock it.

  • @uncommoncure i have been a christian for years...up til now! The reason i'm now an atheist is because i did my research instead of blindy following what everyone told me. if you really have that much faith in christianity, then you wouldn't be afraid to check out all the other religions...if you're right, then it'll just make your faith that much stronger....i'm just saying

  • @shortstackstar I would never want anyone to blindly follow anything . I would rather a person be Atheist (even though I'm Mormon) then blindly follow Christianity. I honestly believe that any religion which helps us become better people will be blessed, regardless of doctrine. However, I only ask one thing of you shortstack, don't be angry. If you feel that you don't wish to follow the scriptures, by all means don't. Just try to lead the best life you can and god will bless you : ]

  • @Thornirie I completely disagree God will not bless you Unless you believe in him.

"If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Rom 10:9

Your actions do nothing for you but to prove your faith is genuine.

  • @jmoshkowski you need both faith and works. if you ONLY have faith but you're a crappy person then thats not enough. but i dont really think there are people who truly have faith AND are bad people, because if you really had faith you would act on it and be a good person. if you say you had faith but you are a jerk to everyone, then thats kinda being a hypocrite to what you supposedly "believe" lol dont you think? i think they kinda go hand in hand

  • @mlahk7 Yes and No Works don't save you that is all i am saying it is your belief that saves you, your trust in Jesus. As a result of that faith and belief your actions will be an outward demonstration. It is false teaching to say your faith and works are what save you from your sins. "if you ONLY have faith but you're a crappy person then thats not enough." My simple answer to that statement is this person didn't really have faith.

  • To simply acknowledge that something is real or true is not faith or repentance. The devil and his spirits believe in Jesus and know the Bible better than all of us but he has not put his Faith in the Lord for salvation nor can he because of the choice he has already made. My point is True faith and Repentance produces good works but the works are not necessary for Salvation. Read Jame

  • @shortstackstar the creator did take him out and bound him in chains . he is suposedly in heaven right now bound up in chains by an angel .

  • @TheStripcell assuming you're talking about satan....so what, God just let him corrupt his supposedly perfect garden, waited until he successfully tempted Eve and THEN took him out??!

Secondly, if Adam and Eve didn't know right from wrong, why was it their fault that they ate the apple? how were they supposed to know that disobedience was wrong? Food for thought.....

  • @shortstackstar lol , there was no apple ! the king james has alot of bad translatoins my man . really bad ones . to get a true understanding and messeges in the verses and books you absolutly 110% better get yourself a strongs concordence ditionary and look up some of the words . i believe the word tree or trunk in greek meens [the torso of a man .

  • @TheStripcell i could point out soo many things wrong with that....so what you're saying is Adam and Eve supposedly ate a man?

  • @TheStripcell I will admit, the old testament can be a bit...hazy in some parts. Thats why you have to read it carefully, follow the notes, and most importantly, pray to heavenly father for the true meaning of the scriptures. He has also blessed us with a new testament, the Book of Mormon, which clears up alot of the things that were fuzzy with the Bible. The Book of Mormon has no such issues, which is why I like it more then the Old Testament, its an easier read.

  • @shortstackstar You make excellent points Shortstack, but you're following the negatives to much. God didn't send us to lead easy and peacefull lives. We can have that in Heaven. He sent us here for challenges, to strengthen us. He knew that Eve would take the apple, it was necesary for Sin to be created, just like Jesus needed to be baptized for repentence to be created. He SENT Satan to tempt them.

  • @SicopataRxx Actually shortstack the new testament is the most reliable source of history we have period. Also we don't use priests either. That is Catholicism. What is the christian doctrine do you know? Not trying to be fasicious. Just trying to make a point.

  • This song is a blessing

  • another verse: Psalms 37:7 : Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him

do not fret when men succeed in their ways when they carry out their wicked schemes. God bless :)

  • Re;hispoetforever, She sings like this cause the words means much to her. She has issues with being still. She relates to it. Artists do well with material they understand. The song has shoulders because of her experience. (you might call this love expressed or the expression of love!)

  • Beautiful!

  • Most Excellent!!

  • The undeniable truth is that Finlandia is a most heart-gripping timeless melody. The Christian lyrics that were inspired by the unforgettable music, and sung by Selah, bring powerful peace to a believer's soul. Thanks for this wonderful video.

  • @hispoetforever- You are so very true, I love to hear one sing to YAH. This sister did a glorious job. It help me with my worship to HIM. • This is BEAUTIFUL, but I wish they hadn't cut the first half of the second verse. It's my favorite:

Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake

To guide the future as He has the past.

    Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;

All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know

His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below

  • Agreed! That's my favorite verse, too! Thanks for posting them on here!

  • Thank you so much.

  • wait...is there Psalm 27:34????

  • Thanks for the correction. the verse, "The Lord will hold your hand, and if you stumble, you still won't fall" is found in Psalms 37:24 (CEV).

  • wait...is there psalm 27:34???

  • I really love this song, thank you so much for sharing the Spirit through song and video.

  • The music of Be Still, My Soul was taken from one of the movements of a tone poem of "Finlandia," composed in 1899 by Finland's best-known composer Jean Sibelius. His music is characterized by a nationalistic spirit along with poetry, often evoking his homeland's majestic charm.

  • Where does Katharina von Schlegel, b. 1697 fit into this scenario?? The relation is found in the hymnal: HYMNS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS (hymn no. 124), where it is indicated that Sibelius arranged his tune from her original. These are Presbyterian Board of Christian Education and is used by the Choir with permission.See the hymnal for details. For insight into the use of various compositions, see 13th Article of Faith of the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • @DWOODPHD: You're wrong about that, actually. The hymn was entirely composed by Sibelius. It has nothing to do with von Schlegel.

And you know, the people who wrote the hymnal CAN be wrong. -_-'

  • Words: Katharina von Schlegel, 1752. Music: Jean Sibelius, 1899.

'always glad to see students concerned about giving credit where credit is due. :)

Btw, Presbyterians are very particular about this, and likewise The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I trust THEIR reference, they earned it.

  • Ah. I thought you meant that von Schlegel actually composed the music. :/ Which she totally didn't.

It's funny how the moment there's a really nice theme out there, people in other countries steal it and make it religious. They should've just composed their own tune. -_-'

  • Both persons were - no doubt - inspired by her/his higher power - which is good; the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - as most churches - likes to give credit to those who are endowed with exceptional talents ... remember that the highest compliment to a great person's talent is to copy them ... just remember: reference them when you do; before you know it you will be showing your own unique talents being all the better having "stood on the shoulders of giants."

  • I'd take it as a compliment... These are very powerful lyrics and they need a powerful melody to carry them. I think it works well.

  • They are powerful if you're religious. I'm an atheist. ._.' If it works for other people, it's fine. They don't for me.

  • Hey, that is what I thought :) it sounded very much like Finlandia, I am so glad that it has now Jesus on it:)

    Best regards from a finn

  • I just love this hymn. It's so comforting to know that no matter what happens God is ever faithful.

  • The Holy Spirit tells me to "Be Still..." often. When I obey, the peace is overwhelming. I immediately think of Psalm 46:10
