Rach appeared to be more self-conscious about playing his music, especially the concertos, than others'. I find him hurrying through the concertos, especially the Third at breakneck speeds, where in the Chopin Sonata he is pitch-perfect in everything. No finer rendition of it exists, including Horowitz's.
Lang Lang is a great admirer of Rachmaninov and talk about him. Just like you talk about you favorate teacher. What's wrong with that? Why all these hatelul reponses?
Do yourself a favor. If you hate him so much, don't come to any Lang Lang postings at all. It is bad for your health.
Lol. I really hate what Lang Lang represents for music and art, but I agree with you XD... it's bad for our health to stop by his videos and waste our time and billis in his nonsenses and stupid talk.
who is that man with respect to rachmaninoff to talk about rachmaninoff .....
where's the logic when he said he played different than he wrote .. maybe the version he thought rachmaninoff wrote was for joseph hoffman who put some alterations on it ... .. moreover if u listen to rachmaninoff playing piano concerto 3 u will feel the music and touch it becuase of rachmaninoff';s soft hands not like this stupid metal pianist !!!
Also, music isn't about exactness, it is about expression, beautify and emotions; no two pieces when played sound the same nor are they meant to. They're a unique snap shot of the performers life where his emotions come through in the piece being played.
I think that there is a great disparity between the way that he talks about music, and the way that he plays. You get the impression that he...knows better.
@lurgidbee Being a purist doesn't make you uptight. I consider myself somewhat of a purist, listen to music for pleasure, and sincerely dislike Lang Lang.
@lurgidbee Well, it's a mixed picture for "purists". Often Lang Lang doesn't seem to respect the music - I saw him play Rachmaninoff's piano concerto no#3, and he entered the orchestra at half their speed. That's just disrespectful to the other musicians at that point. He has a very liberal approach to the music, which doesn't seem malicious - it's just that he's indulging himself at all costs. Which leaves us torn, because that's what to love about his playing - how joyful and espressive it is.

this lang lang is an asshole. how dare he spew on a great master. i agree with this comment here. and gergiev must be equally as dubious to have anything to do with this freak. i heard gergiev's Salome at the Met a couple of years ago and it was so bad they had to scratch the recording session they had planned. these people are not musicians. they are out for their own self-glorification. this lang lang is horrific. watch his vid of Rach 3 and see for yourself.

I couldn't agree with CMDeon more. The VERY IDEA that LangLang is being interviewed about this subject is ludicrous. Who is HE to pass on information about a master composer when HE HIMSELF behaves like a complete lunatic when playing the piano? Mr. Lang fits perfectly into the sick landscape that has become the classical music business.
Lang Lang should consider that companies that publish music frequently make mistakes. Being a former music editor, I can unequivocally say that publishers f*#$ up frequently.
Lang Lang's comment about what was printed and what Rachmaninoff played is invalid. OBVIOUSLY, what R played is what he wanted to hear. It is not improvisation. Perhaps LL needs to rethink this. LL is not a master - by a long shot. Nor should he assume to know what a master composer like Rachmaninoff wanted. Period.

I really think that you don't know either. LangLang says that Rachmaninoff himself didn't play what was written down. Doesn't that make you think that the person who put the music on paper was WRONG? And that the man who created it was RIGHT? Therefore, for LangLang to say that Rach. is wrong because he didn't follow the printed music is ludicrous.
what i appreciate is his passion to play.. it s not faked. and i have listend his work of Rachmaninoff for dozens times and i like his annotation. While i believe the music industry shades some talent..but it also propagates the music and its idea, which is basically good

Rachmaninoff was more soft, but not as passionately as the pianists that plays the same piece today.

Non-purists, and those who listen to music for pleasure, find Lang Lang very good.
From the scathing, hateful comments, I gather that purists and other seriously uptight people despise him.
