Christine Miller was so brave. One of the most heartbreaking moments of The Death Tape is when it is announced that the congressman is dead. After that, you don't hear from her again. I imagine she finally had to accept that there really was no link to the outside world any more. It rips my heart out.

There were more murderers here than it seems. Those who wanted to die also wanted everyone else to die, and seen to it that they did. Listen to the other 3 tapes made during a white night the previous april. It reveals that alot of followers were sicker than Jim. They wanted to go back to the states and kill their relatives in all sort of sick ways. The adults,sorry to say, were not too bright to follow this sick homo to begin with. The children were the true victims.

The fact that he manipulated what the bible said to attain his goals doesnt mitigate the fact that the Peoples Temple (religious name even) sold itself as a religion. ALL religions twist the bible to fit their agendas. Unfortunately, some do it with more obviously devastating results.

The part that makes this horrifying for me--and the part that I feel most people miss--is that but for fate, that could have been any of us there that day. You can say "I would've been smarter, I would've left" but the fact is, nobody joins what they think is a cult. They join a group with ideals that they believe in. No one knew when they first left for Guyana that it was going to end this way. If we had heard Jim Jones in the 70's, that could have been us.

If you say that "had you been living in the 70's you might have felt different about communism" - I am sure that I would not, but it's impossible to know since I didn't actually live in the 70's.
But your point that almost all of them were regular folks- not wide-eyed crazies- I think you're quite right.
