Berlinski IS a smart man, with irresistible prose in his writing. However, I find both Berlinski and Hitchens to sag in this debate. Berlinski more so. Maybe I'm biased because I'm an atheist, ha ha.
This rather useless debate aside, I find a lot more useful things in Berlinski's writings. I find Hitchens' argument that "Religion Poisons Everything" to be circular and illogical. But, there is such a consensus that Hitchens is RIGHT on this point, people adore him anyways (I don't know WHY)
A hammer can be used for hammering nails or for killing. Is one hammer more dangerous then the other? Taking hold of someones belief, whether in god or materialism, and using it to guide them to a road of destruction is what is dangerous. If people are have no more special creation then dirt or hydrogen, then do I have the right to kill? If not Why?
Religious documents make up the best record of recorded history btw
The best camera-work entails NOT smashing the camera into the faces of the peo. being filmed. Note that I capitalized all the letters of NOT. One of the rules of pointing out the obvious entails NOT smashing printed materials into the faces of the peo. being informed as Maryland (to Gen. Lee) was not exactly Laos (to Nixon) in relation to N. Vietnam nor reflective of the way Northern whites habitually sacrificed themselves for negroes thru-out the 1860's on orders fr. Lincoln the melancholic.
Let we Americans familiarize ourselves with the "T4 Program" as implemented in Germany during the reign of those who promoted National Socialism, 1933-45, so that WE THE PEOPLE may assess, in full measure, what we're up against.
Wikipedia: Hitchens has written of his homosexual experiences when in boarding school in his memoir, "Hitch-22." These experiences continued in his college years when he allegedly had relationships with two men who eventually became a part of the Thatcher government.
Gay homosexuals are abundant along the Atlantic & Pacific coastlines. Flamboyant homosexual rituals have been embraced by Hollywood. One day San Francisco will be the most normal of places. Indeed, by mid-century, it will be THE city whereat normal people can let their hair down sans fear of gay-attack. Don't give up on men. Lesbians need to give normal sexuality another chance.
Hitchens won. Easily. I hate formal debates like this, if it was just a conversation he would have been able to address the crap Berlinski and even the Fixed Point representative said. Ah well.
FFS I can't believe how ignorant/retarded this guy is, how the hell can a non-belief be seen as dogmatic? It's not even an ideology! And so what if there are questions that a POSITION on ONE claim that are not answered by holding that position- answers will come when one investigates. PhDs are overrated.
@TurboDally Im as atheist as they come, but look up the definition of dogma. It isnt necessarily related to theology
I dont really agree that it can be applied to atheism, but the argument could be made that there is an authoritative tenet of atheism that presupposes no God. A la, a dogma of atheism
@handsanitizer1 It doesn't presuppose no god though, you only need to have no belief in a god or gods to be an atheist, a belief that there is no god is different. It's the difference between not buying what someone is selling and selling something different.
This guy Berlinski would put a meth head to sleep.

Eu Cred
Eu, eu te mai aºtept
Cred cã nu e drept
Sã-mi ramãna numai amintirea cã ai fost
Eu simt cã tu mereu
Eºti în jurul meu
Gãnd ºi spirit ce ma ocroteºti
Imi dai curaj
Eu cred cã m-asculþi
Eu cred cã nu uiþi

The moment Berlinski dodged the question, was the moment he lost the debate.
