@ pamkayvan: That is not handclapping it drum brushes played on snare drum. I still have this 78rpm Capitol recording down in the crawlspace of my basement purchased in 1956.
Isn't it odd that there were so many country songs that were popular in the late 50's!!! They were all great and bring back so many memories!!! THANKS!!
I used to listen to this when I was a teenager and during a bad divorce in the early 70's. I still love to hear Sonny James. He was on Mike Huckabee several shows back. Great legend.
I think the clapping sound is due to the drums and the way the mikes were set up. In the record you can hear the same thing, but its not as pronounced. I believe he may very well be the greatest singer that ever lived. He sang country, but he was not country.
One of the original rock and roll ballads, or at least during the original rock and roll era. I remember listening to it in 1958. I was in the 8th grade!
I will be 57 in less then 2 wks. And on my b'day a man I've had a crush on for over 40 yrs has finally got enough nerve to take me out for dinner. and this song just seems to fit. Thank you
Absolutely heartwarming ! You wanna hear a beautiful love song coming from someone's heart & soul.....listen to Sonny James pour it out here. Man, the way he expresses the lyric "emotion" hits the nail square on the head. The whole song really takes you on a heavenly journey....thank you for posting.
(you notice the cameraman doesn't take a full length shot -that's because sonny james is doing the percussion himself with dustbin lids strapped to his feet)
This song is all about emotion. The stuff that came out of the late 50's & early 60's was the foundation of so much music that would follow. I'm proud to be a baby boomer(now 58),hear a beautiful gem like this, & feel captured in what was a wonderful era in fine music & harmonies back then.

@MrNorthPaw LOL...I was growing up during that time - and yes, the music was very 'singable' - that's why it has held up so well to this day. (of course, the 30's-40's were also times of incredibly great POPULAR music.).

If our elders and our young mates would try to listen new and old stuff toghether we would not have crap like britney, jackson, elvis, u2 and the other mass sensations. @zumbie My uncle actually played bass for Sonny in the late 70's and early 80's. I remember seeing him play for both Sonny and Don Gibson on the same night. They played at the Peoria Shrine Mosque in Peoria Illinois.
Sonny was a born again Christian and refused to play any venue that sold alcohol.
@zumbie There is absolutely nothing wrong with Elvis! Elvis was a southern boy with a big heart and an amazing voice. If you don't like Elvis that is fine but please do not refer to his music as crap. The others I agree they are crap for the most part, but each one had outstanding songs. For instance Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror. While you do have the right of freedom of speech remember that everyone has there on taste in music. Voice your opion but respect others as well!
@twdjm92 i was talking about industry not music. but when somebody says anything bad about this "kings" everybody goes mad. You say that Elvis was a good guy with amazing voice, okey, and MJ's man in the mirror is worth it, fine, but both of them became a brand that made entire generations to adore them in an insane way that is harmful for the music in general as I see it. It's my opinion and is what mi first message was about. I don't blame Elvis as a aperson I blame Elvis™ as I blame the other
There have been many songs recorded about young love, but this is my favorite of all time. I've been married to the same women for 40 years, and this song still expresses the emotion I had for her 40 years ago!

@shaneraleigh Nice to hear that a young person like yourself can appreciate a true class act like Sonny James. He is one of the greats that you just don't hear much about anymore. But us old guys won't forget him.
According to Wikipedia this song was written by Ric Carty and Carole Joyner.
Carty recorded the song on 11/24/1956; it did not chart. The Versions by Tab Hunter, 1/19/1957 and Sonny James 1/5/1957 went to number one and sold millions of copies. What timeless and beautiful lyrics!
I remember B.G. and Honey. " See the tree, how big it's grown but then, it hasn't been so long..." I liked Bobby. I liked "Watching Scotty Grow", a great song as well.
I love this song.look howe he injoys to sing this song.hes smiling and really play and sings with feelings and good vibrato, this is how a real ballad shoud be.LETS BRING BACK THE 50s,whos with me hehe.
BamaTony73 I also love this song by Sonny James i have not heard this song in over 40 years but i know all the words and for years i would sing it a few months ago i did what you did.ask your dad if he liked the song Half way to paradise and if so ask him who was the one who sang it when he first heard it.
to "nickyno72" - you foul language is crude and rude and you may think you are being cool but you are just showing your immaturity and ignorance. This is a great song by Sonny James .. show some respect or keep your mouth shut please.
this was the very first record that I ever bought. a 45 didn't even have a record player. Liked the song so well. i was only in my teens. that's been a while.....
I don't know. I am not sure how my 75 year old Mother would feel if I said on Thanksgiving day, "That's good fucking turkey Mom!" Thats why I like some of the old music and tv shows. You don't need to curse to express your true feelings. Young love is case in point.
Chorus: Young love, first love, Filled with true devotion, Young love, our love, We share with deep emotion. Just one kiss from your sweet lips, Will tell me that your love is real, And I, I, I can fe-el that it's true. We will vow to one another, There will never be another, Lo-ve for you, or for me. Chorus: Young love, first love, Filled with true devotion, Young love, our love, We share with deep emotion.

Sonny is a great rock and roll singer. Youtube search MANUEL VARGAS (DISCO 45 and VIVA EL ROCK AND ROLL) and you will see an honoring to this one and others singers and songs of these years.

Thanks for the post. Nice of you to keep footage from so long ago. We've gone through our archives and don't have this one! Thanks again // Paul

This gorgeous song reminds me of Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Rory Emerald. Thanks for posting a true classic.

Amazing.....A Rockabilly singer who never had a hit, then all of the sudden he proves he really has a voice, but never to do it again.....

"never to do it again?" Sonny had 16 straight #1 singles..and a career total of 23!
