Thanks for the video. I love your vines. Do you have plastic underneath to keep the bugs away? The bugs on the ground consumed half of one of my small melons. Beautiful garden.
@alz123alz I use the plastic mostly to keep the weeds down and to keep the moisture away from the melons and leaves--and any fungus spores left from last year. I think it could help with bugs too--it's worth a try. Good luck! I hate the bad bugs!! Thanks for your comment!
BlueOne, if its not ripe, just break it up and put it back directly into the soil. It would make compost. Watermelons have plenty of vitamins that your other vegetables would love. I love this wys of composting. No waiting around.
@KLisaLisa I just want to thank you so very much for making this video! This is the first year I have ever grown watermelon, and I had no idea when to harvest them. As soon as I watched your video I went right out to my garden and picked 3 of them!! I'm not going to eat any of them until tomorrow--my birthday! :•} Thanks again!!!!
@Racingirl911 Happy Birthday Racing Girl! I'm glad you liked the video! Next time, just harvest one watermelon and after you cut it open and tasted it, make the decision of when to cut the other 2 based on how that one was. Hopefully they will be delicious and none of this conversation will be necessary!
@000Winter000 If you have any more melons on that plant, you can wait a few days past the browning of the tendril and spoon before harvesting without fear that the watermelon will go bad.
@000Winter000 The sweetness of the melon depends on a couple of things and one is the variety of melon--some types are sweeter than others. The belly should have been yellowish. Sometimes if the melon has been rolled a little, the original ground spot will turn green.
It may be effected by having good rich soil VS clay/hard soil or not enough sun.
If you water a melon plant too much, it may be juicy, but the sugar is diluted. I just make sure the spoon and closest tendril are completely brown.
I used this method today and harvested two melons. I cut into one and it was nowhere near ripe. I will let the other one sit around and hope it ripens. I hope I've not wasted both...
@bluen0te Sorry it didn't work for you. Perhaps you were looking at the wrong tendril. Sometimes there are so many vines, it is easy to look at the wrong one. I have never had this method fail for me.
@pgb1963 My research leads me to believe that all watermelons have a spoon and tendril--as long as you don't confuse watermelons with other types of melons.
After I turned off the video camera, I took out the clippers, and cut the stem of the ripe one. I rinsed it off with the hose, took it in, and put it in the refrigerator. It was delicious. The difficult part is knowing when to cut, not the actual cutting.
I only got 3 melons on my plant this year? All the rest after the rains we had here in Texas all the little ones dried up and turned brown? Do you know why?
My plant only gave me 2 watermelons this year. In the past years I got 7 and 7 the year before. This is the hottest summer we have had in some time. I always have some melons turn brown and fall off when small. That could be for various reasons including too close on the same vine to another melon and something is wrong with the fruit. Watermelons are prone to fungus problems which can be aggravated by too little moisture followed by too much moisture.
@KLisaLisa Thank you! I am VERY new to gardening. But doing ok I think from doing them all from seed for my first time. Now the 3 I have look awesome! But they started growing big before all the rains we had started. They still look and are doing great! But what should I expect after these 3 turn ripe in the next week or so? Will more melons grow after these 3 in time before fall? Or will it pretty much be over with?
I don't know when your 3 will ripen fully--keep looking at the spoon and the tendril. I wouldn't think they would all ripen at exactly the same time.
Is your watermelon plant still producing flowers? If not, you won't have more melons. Even if it is producing flowers, I don't know if there would be time for the melon to ripen before it gets too cool. If you aren't in a hurry for the space, just leave the plant in the ground and see what happens. Have fun with gardening!
@KLisaLisa I am thinking by th size of them and the way that spoon leaf is looking it will not be but about another week? But yes its still producing allot of flowers! I am oping I have enough time for another few at least? lol! Wishful thinking... haha! Bu thanks so much for the help! I enjoy doing it as much as I do playing guitar. I really like to know what I am eating and what is in it? Its also nice to learn and see things grow step by step. I think everyone should at least try it once.
They are beautiful, you are so talented!

Last year was a great year for watermelons and bad for cantaloupes and cucumber--at least here in central Virginia.
The year before was great for everything I grew.

Well I live in AL and everyone I know thumps watermelons to see how full they are (idk why) and we just go to wal mart and see if they are full

I've thumped watermelons and never knew what sound I was listening for! I saw this method on the internet and it has been very reliable.
