Based on your advice, and the cost of upgrading the HDD and OS, as well as needing to buy an EasyConnect to get a USB port on the F5, I'm now looking at getting an F5v. I had 2 more questions, if you don't mind- 1) Does the F5v run hot? You've mentioned the j3500 running hot. I always thought the le1700 ran uncomfortably hot, personally, and 2) what kind of real-world-usage battery life do you get on the F5v? I'm looking for 4+ hours in the field, and the icore is supposed to have that.

@cloudofwords1 You might get 4 hours from an i3 model, the i7 gets me around 3 hours in proper use (good screen brightness, 3G on etc). The battery is hot swappable and the charging is fast.

Yes, they do get hot, particularly around the processor on the right hand side, but the cooling system works well and I have never found it too hot to hold. The thicker rubberized backing insulates the F5v better than the LE series...

Thanks so much for your time! I'll be sure to get the AFFS+ Corning Glass screen on the F5. I'm sure the F5v is even better, but it's still a bit steep to purchase new. My business isn't that big yet! As long as the AFFS+ screens are the same between the two models, I can accept the lower cpu power of the core2duo 1.06 ghz cpus. Thanks a lot. :)

Wow, that's really good news. So, it's your understanding that the screens in the F5v/C5v and the J3400/3500 is the sane AFFS+ screen that's in the late 2009 models if the C5/F5, right? Do you have any advice for new F5 users or critiques of the product that would helpful to know? There's much less info about the F5's on the internet than there is about the 1600/1700's.

@cloudofwords1 There was a non-AFFS+ version of the F5 and C5, so buyer beware! We never sold it in Australia because we thought it was a waste of time, but our counterparts in the US apparently sold lots because they were cheaper.

The F5 was much more of a rugged machine than the LE series, so there were far fewer home / office users of the product. My advice would be to visit the Motion Website for the latest drivers, video training etc. Run Windows 7 on, don't bother with XP if you can.

I know this review is rather old, but I'm thinking of getting a c5/f5 with an AFFS+ screen. They're quite reasonable used on ebay. I'm both an artist and a landscaper, and so am looking for a Wacom, outdoor-viewable screen on a tablet that can run Windows 7. Two years later, do you still think this is the best readily available outdoor viewable screen on a tablet pc? I don't need power, just portability, toughness, programmable buttons for art programs, and a great outdoor viewable screen.

@cloudofwords1 Yes, AFFS+ is still the best, and the current F5v and C5v use the same screen. I use this as my daily tablet and the screen gets comments all the time. I've even had people attempt to peel it off at a trade show because they thought it was a sticker!

Better than on the old model... 3 - 3.5 hours. Importantly it fully charges in 90 mins, and gets to 90% in 60 mins. Batteries are warm swap via standby, or hotswap wth power in too. Dock has a spare battery charger as these are designed to run 24x7...
