THanks for sharing! I came from the other side tho -- was atheist. but atheism never worked for me. so I was agnostic. to make a claim that there is ABSOLULTELY NOTHING always fell apart...l have a long story of how i came to any belief. It's been 12 years. I ended up going to the same type of churches. I've lost faith in church, but not G-d..I have a hard time labeling myself "Christian". Very into existentialism. I recommend 'The Brothers Karamazov' by Dostoevesky to any atheist or believer.
very brave post, laying it all out there. I thought immediately of the pale blue dot video after listening to this, I think it was your words about compassion and reality that prompted it
welcome to the fold. i went to a catholic school and just never bought into religion but to grow up in a christian family and turn your back on those ideals for a life of free thought, i salute you. especially in america. its so much easier here in england.
@CresseyJosh When I talk about this stuff it brings up a lot of personal hurt and emotion. I am actually much happier and fulfilled now without religion.
Really makes a point why this kind of stuff should not be taught in schools, at least not exclusively. In Finland you study the religion your parents belong to, and a little bit of others. Usually, it's pretty tame, although sometimes not. Depends on the teacher really...Anyway, there is some good stuff, but then also the chance for smth like this...i.e. poisoning a child's mind :( Why would you take that chance, makes no sense! Much better to teach all religions equally, gives some perspective.
@pistolpackintim Well I certainly don't think it's hate!, You're entitled to your opinion like everybody else, I think its good that intelligent people like you are providing, fair, reasonable points and sharing your views Instead of comments like "All Christians are Douchebags" etc.
And tbh I can see where you're coming from, and that's fair enough man :)
Can't say I'm going to become atheist, but your video definitely made me think
@QwertyKillification It is hate in that it is much like the popular Christian phrase "hate the sin, love the sinner"; I take the view of hate the faith, love the faithful.
What human being do in the name of what they believe does not mean that what they believe in has anything to do with what they advocate. God especially has nothing to do with the proposed and acted on power plays, violence, persecution war and enslavement allegedly justified the the name of God. It angers me when people say they don't believe in God because of all the misappropriated thing that have been done in the name of God.
@GothChristianPatriot That isn't why I don't believe...if you had watched the whole video you would know that. Its not what people do in the name of their particular god, its the idea of faith itself and the basic teachings of Christian belief that are evil. The very concept of original sin is sadistic and when it is taught to children it is child abuse, IMO.
@pistolpackintim ... but, I would like you to give me some examples of those execution methods. I haven't ever heard of a method of death that I thought more painful than the cross (maybe equal, but not really more). As for my original point, all it is is that ours isnt just a blind faith. We aren't without logical and scientific support. But if you want to keep talking about this later, I have no problem with it. I am just strapped for time tonight, pm me if you want. Again, great video.
@CreatedCreator21 Thumbscrews, the rack, the iron maiden, placing a pot over the stomach with rats and then heating it so they chew down through the body to escape, There was also the 'choke pear" that was inserted anally, orally or vaginally, and then expanded....need I go on?
@pistolpackintim Don't forget the brazen bull. Tied upside down and sawed in half... etc etc. Not to mention crucifixion was derived originally from impalement in times before the supposed crucifixion of Christ.
@pistolpackintim Look, If I had the time, I would love to keep going about this but everything you are saying is backtracking. You aren't rebutting what I say, you are only either repeating yourself, or bringing up something else that has very little to do with my comment. My point isnt pain levels, it isnt that no one else suffers or is a martyr for what they believe. I am talking about the circumstances under which the disciples died, which i stated earlier...
@CreatedCreator21 I could apply that to any number of heretics, non-believers, and atheists who were burned and killed for not being a Christian. They were rejected by Christian society; they were rejected by Church leadership. Take off your God glasses ;-)
Interesting story. My family had a similar story in coming out of religion. We all have varying beliefs on theism now, but it's a rough road in the beginning. If you don't mind my asking, how long has it been since you've stepped away from religion?
@pistolpackintim ... surrounded by people who believe in and support what he does. The disciples were going against their people, their government or elders, their whole social structure of the time (which was based around following the law of moses). They were going against what they had been taught as children. They were going against what their own families believed. The suicide bomber is brought up to believe what he believes, he lives around people who teach it to him day in and day out
@pistolpackintim every religion? and I am not saying the fact that they were rejected by their soceity is unique to christianity, I am saying the fact that they were rejected by their society and went so far as to all but one die for that same belief. You do not see that in other religions. Certainly you know about the persecution of Christians in Rome, Peter and Paul were among that group, peter was crucified upside down in that time period (by his own request).
@CreatedCreator21 People have been killed and persecuted throughout history for any number of reasons including religious faith. In fact, many pagans died for their beliefs and were tortured by Christians during the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, the Church came up with far more painful and creative torture methods than a cross.
@pistolpackintim in the case of islamic extremists, they have been brainwashed from birth that they will inherit 72 virgins if they blow themselves up and kill infidels. In the cases of self masochists, they usually are people who would do so in any setting because of depression or they are someone who has a brain dysfunction. the type of sacrifice we are talking about here is in support of a man they had know for at most the back quarter of their lives. also the islamic extremists is...
eeh I think nothing moves me or gets to me anymore about these stories, Atheists become christians, christian become muslims, muslims become atheists, christian become atheists, atheists become christians, muslim become christians and the list goes on....happens everyday.
Hold on to your honesty, not many people can talk for 33 minutes and not contradict themselves ;-) You sir are a legend. No doubt there will be a few morons with nonsensical comments, but that is par for course.
Hey man, strong video. Your honesty and bravery is astounding, inspiring even. I definitely was moved by your story. If you would, could you read these verses, and compare it to the things you were taught as a kid and that some churches seem to ignore when all they talk about is condemnation and hell and fire and brimstone. 1 John 4:18-19; Romans 8:1-4; Romans 8:37-39. You really don't have to read them at all, I just felt compelled to post them. Have a great night bro.
@CreatedCreator21 Did you even listen to all 33 minutes of what he said? Go back, shut up, listen to what he says, then quote from the Bible - write it down, read what you wrote, then listen to 33 minutes of what he said again, then look at what you wrote. Think about the possibility that the Bible is wrong, then write a new question. Not for him, or me, but for yourself.
@CreatedCreator21 I left out a lot of my transition period...I considered many different theologies during that time. Its not the version of faith that is the problem...its faith itself. It demands the denial of objective fact to maintain belief in the unproven and unjustified.
@pistolpackintim thank you for answering without attacking, and answering well at that. And I definitely understand where you are coming from. I got a friend who left the faith recently for similar reasons, though now he says he never really believed it. I recently read a book called Case for Christ. It is written by lee strobel, and is about a couple years he spent interviewing christian leaders and philosophers on christ and his life. I am not going to say there is no bias but...
@pistolpackintim aha! parried :] I will definitely check him out though, looks like a solid writer, at least from the number of works he has published.
@pistolpackintim ...it provides a lot of factual and logical support for Christ and his life and miracles. but yeah, also, haha i just read my last comment and I did not mean to say you never believed in christianity, because based on the video it seems to me like you did, though you were skeptical you really did believe in it. as for the book, just a suggestion again, something I looked at when thinking about how christianity is a religion of "blind"(maybe) faith and feeling skeptical of that
@CreatedCreator21 everything Jesus did has been claimed by modern day spiritual leaders and there are witnesses that will testify to those miracles. People are easily deluded.
@pistolpackintim but not all facts are based on eyewitness accounts. also, not everything. no one today has witnessed anyone being flogged to the point of their organs showing, and hung on a cross and then stabbed through at least one lung, pronounced dead by professional executioners, and then being witnessed alive and well within the next week preaching alongside his disciples. and then those disciples going on to die for a belief in this resurrection (which they wouldn't were it farce)
@CreatedCreator21 even if you take that and make it just witnessed dying, and then saying they came back to life and calling themselves god, you still have the 11 disciples who died horrible deaths for what they preached plus many other people being killed for that same teaching. If they knew he hadn't died, they wouldn't have let themselves be killed. if they doubted it even one bit, they wouldn't have done things like being crucified upside down. i know i wouldn't have
@CreatedCreator21 People have suffered and died for any number of beliefs throughout history. They blow themselves up, they self immolate, they beat themselves. It's nothing unique to Christian faith.
@philais Your wager, or should I say Pascal's, is based on a specific assertion among a sea of infinite possibilities. What if by serving your God, I would anger another god and seal my doom for eternity? And what do I have to lose? How about a lifetime not wasted worrying about the eternal consequences of every thought and action...how about a life not consumed by paranoia and delusion?
Well, I don't waste my life worrying about eternal consequences. I picked a side & live on it quietly. I take a deep breath, I enjoy it. I fish with my son's I enjoy it. I view nature in peace, I live my life daily. That is the best I can do. I try to live without fearing I'm going 2 hell. I live or try 2 live n peace& of course that is the challenge. When I die will I be forgotten? Yes. But my actions n this life will b lived n the generations that I fathered.
@philais What if you are wrong? What if the Muslims are right? Or the Mormons? Or any number of infinitely possible "truths"? I prefer the verifiable and the application of critical thought to observation. Remember what Voltaire said, "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."
@pistolpackintim Yep. What is Hindu's are right? What if WE are God's jokes? I have a tendence to hate christians for their narrow mindedness and stupidy. Sheeple. Weak. Over and over have been decieved. Is that God's fault? Man's fault or My fault?
I can't say I've been where you have, but I share the same sentiments and your honesty struck a nerve with me for my own reasons. I would just like to to tell you that you are a kindred spirit as far as the search for knowledge goes, please don't ever stop questioning everything that affects your life. Don't ever forsake your fellow man or stop being charitable, your compassion and your intelligence will always triumph over ignorance and manipulation.
@sphinxart It took me seven years to be able to fully express all this...deprogramming after all that stuff was a long, tough road. I have come in contact with others who have been through it and they all tell me similar stories.
@pistolpackintim Well I appreciate your honesty sir, more than you know. Reason and truth is more important to me now - more than the promises of eternal life by religious fanatics ;-)
Firstly, I would like to thank you for being so honest - few people are. What you are sir, is intelligent. You think for yourself and you have emotional intelligence as well. I'm 12 minutes into your video, I might need to comment again ;-)
I lost 25 years of my life to religion too. Thank you for having the courage to speak about something that brings out so much painful and intense emotions.
Thank you for your story and thank you for your honesty. It can be so hard to overturn the things we are taught as children, no matter how smart or rational a person is.
Okay. There are people out there that just want to live without any label or following anything. They are not atheists they are not anarchists. They just want to be free from anything. They are not Freemasons either. They have not title.
For example: Worker Bee A just wants to go to work, come home, date lady bees, not be tied down, see other laday bees, drink, etc. without ridicule or persecutions.
@wwe107 Sadists, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, Jews, Catholics, Mormans, (insert any thing I've missed here), etc. will be hypocritical of Worker Bee A's lifestyle in some shape or form.
@wwe107 “In fact, "atheism" is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a "non-astrologer" or a "non-alchemist." We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs.”
@pistolpackintim - I believe the word Atheism was first used by believers (in Greek Gods) as an insult. They were name calling...identifying those who were "without god(s)" by calling them atheists.
We can blame the ancient believers for the terminology I guess :)
I am sorry for the abuse you and so many others have suffered. Just know that reason, and by extension, Atheism is not another religion. Don't buy into that. The natural universe is what it is, and not always what we would like it to be. A Jesus didn't die for my sins, but a star did die to create me. As one who has been an Atheist almost all of her life, I am glad I heard the perspective of someone like you, even though your story makes me so sad. I may not know you, but I am proud of you. :-)
@melissa19591 Oh, I don't buy into the fact that it's another religion...I was just phrasing it that way because I know they will say that and it does no good to try and argue the point. I wanted to leave out divisive rhetoric in this one and speak from the heart.
Welcome to Free thinking! It's sometimes hard to imagine that people what to believe so much, force themselves to believe and put rationality aside. It's sad.
@Marzattacz Part of why I made this was because a lot of people who know me now don't know about this part of my life and they see my criticisms of religion as hateful and bigoted. I hope this clears it up for them.
@pistolpackintim your criticism of religion is far from hateful and bigoted. it was a well talked and motivating speech. thank-you for this. having been brought up in Australia (not very religious at all) we don't have that indoctrination and I sympathize for what you had to go through.

The important thing is that we respect each others views

Religion is run by man. & like you, religion has failed me 2.
Faith's personal. 1/1 relationship.
If ur a beting man & beting ur soul,here r 2 bets:
Ur soul that there isn't a God&Ur soul that there is a God.
If there isn't a God then there isn't a soul to lose right? No loss.
If there IS a God then there IS a soul to lose right? BIG loss.
But really, how do u KNOW? Realy?
Im beting on the sur thing. It doesn't "cost" anything 2 live the christian life. A God? eternal WIN! No God? No loss.

@philais Pascal's wager? Really? I prefer not to bet against infinity.

@pistolpackintim
You aren't betting?
philais 1 month ago
@philais Your wager, or should I say Pascal's, is based on a specific assertion among a sea of infinite possibilities. What if by serving your God, I would anger another god and seal my doom for eternity? And what do I have to lose? How about a lifetime not wasted worrying about the eternal consequences of every thought and action...how about a life not consumed by paranoia and delusion?

@pistolpackintim

@pistolpackintim he didn't reply because you are correct.

Damn you for making me cry at 20:30

Thank you so much for this video. Your story is much like mine.

For example: Worker Bee A just wants to go to work, come home, date lady bees, not be tied down, see other laday bees, drink, etc. without ridicule or persecutions.
wwe107 1 month ago
@wwe107 Sadists, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, Jews, Catholics, Mormans, (insert any thing I've missed here), etc. will be hypocritical of Worker Bee A's lifestyle in some shape or form.
Just be.

― Sam Harris, Letter to a Christian Nation

melissa19591 1 month ago
@melissa19591 Oh, I don't buy into the fact that it's another religion...I was just phrasing it that way because I know they will say that and it does no good to try and argue the point. I wanted to leave out divisive rhetoric in this one and speak from the heart.
pistolpackintim 1 month ago
@melissa19591 Thanks.

I hope this clears it up for them.
pistolpackintim 1 month ago
@pistolpackintim your criticism of religion is far from hateful and bigoted. it was a well talked and motivating speech. thank-you for this. having been brought up in Australia (not very religious at all) we don't have that indoctrination and I sympathize for what you had to go through.
Marzattacz 1 month ago
@pistolpackintim Well if it doesn't, then clearly they haven't questioned the things they should.
