STUPENDO. I worship Cappuccilli, and to hear him in this, perhaps the greatest verismo aria ever written for baritone, is a sublime pleasure. Thank you, grande Oneguin65! You have exquisite taste! :-)
Concordo perfettamente, Cappuccilli è stato grandioso e possente nelle sue interpretazioni verdiane e veriste, il tutto condito da una tecnica sopraffina.
Cappuccilli pushes his voice perhaps a little here but it is for expression purposes. He is giving to the words and music meanings and the color of the voice demonstrate clearly this fact. This aria should be put in context and his enormous stage presence and expression transcend himself, he is no longer Cappuccilli but inside the drama of Andrea Chénier. Thank you for posting this video.
I still think Cappuccilli was capable of a more sophisticated rendition. However, he was clearly a house favourite (I recall a good 5 minute ovation which prompted the commentator, Humphrey Burton, to suggest the presence of a claque!) and gave them the old fashioned play-to-the gallery performance they expected. I could be unkind and say he didn't really have the top note on "baccio" in his armoury, or that the general delivery smacked of dispeptic barking......but I love it nonetheless.
I Think it is ridiculous to talk abotut a claque. I was very often in the Viennese Opera House when Cappuccilli sang. A claque was really not necessary. There were so many people, old and young, who just liked him and were enthusiastic.
You could be unkind and say that...but you'd be wrong. Capp's high notes were famous all the way up to a B flat many tenors would dream of having. IAnd don't mean to be rude, but if you can't hear this rock solid F sharp you need to get your ears examined! As to your dispeptic barking comment...well this is verismo not baroque...and this is a totally idiomatic performance by a superb exponent. (I will admit his other in the vienna staatsoper theatre version is slightly better)
I have no technical knowledge of music. Nevertheless, it still seems to me that Cappuccilli shouts the note on "bacio" rather than sings it. Your reference to verismo is very interesting and, to an extent, I take the point. Mind you, the verismo school should not be lazily equated with coarse singing, crude histrionics or lack of style. It is not bel canto - nor should it deteriorate into CAN BELTO! You know your stuff and I respect that.
Dear MrRalissimo...thanks for your respect..you are right. Without wishing to appear immodest....I really DO know my stuff . I have studied singing intensely and been a big fan all my life and been a top level pro singer for 21 years. I know Capp could be a bit crude on times verging on pushing his voice into ugliness...but he such a blood and guts flesh and soul singer that I could forgive him the occasional indiscretion. Also soetimes one gives more in a concert to try and encapsulate all...
Your respectful response is greatly appreciated. One thing I know we are agreed on: opera at its highest level can only ehnance our sense of humanity in all its variety. Blood, guts, flesh and soul - what more could we ask of the art form? I hope we can keep in touch. Any suggested sites?
I had never really heard Cappucilli, and he sings one of my favorite arias with such a tone and vitality that is almost unequalled. I was just singing this aria this morning on my way to work, and I think I may have found a wonderful interpretation to study. BRAVO!
I was there that night. On this same night Milnes had sung Eri Tu and Cappupilli followed with this. Cappuccilli brought the house down with 2x as much applause and bravi. It was the final showdown between the two, and the Vienese didnt hold back in showing who they thought had won the duel! A wondeful treasure and document of that night for me!
Hey Bob, thanks.. Capucilli had great breath.. long phrases. A short guy, maybe five foot 7... I have 2-3 young baritones coming along, it is very exciting.. 3-4 tenors too!
to zanzarone: Keep the good work. I always felt the good baritones are rare commodity. Apropo, I still prefer the velvet voice of Zancanarro. (Here at 3.55 4.45 & last bar, I feel some strain and instability in the voice) Very good anyway. Tnx.
I sang with this guy in the mid eighties, in Chicago... I now teach, in a Pittsburgh major university, and he is on my lips every day... wow... fab, Italian technique...
I also prefer Zancanaro, but I'm not going to be an ass about it. I love Cappuccilli's, Milnes's and Nucci's renditions as well. It's an aria that's hard to wreck, IMO.
Gratecourt, did you hear Cappuccilli and Zancanaro as Gerard shortly one after the other? If you had, you would have been able to compare the success they had with a very similar audience. Zancanaro was good, but Cappuccilli was really great und unforgettable in this part.
¡Impresionante interpretración! Aunque creo que su voz es mucho más adecuda para Verdi que para el verismo. Claro que con esa técnica perfecta podía hacer lo que le diera la gana. Simplemente el mejor.
Can't describe what it is about Cappuccilli...he wasn't famous for vocal color and didn't have the most beautiful voice in the world. But everytime I hear him the hair raises up on the back of my neck! After all his big solos, he's one of the few singers who got a huge ovation every single time. He and Bergonzi are my favorite duo of all time!
zanzaroneKeep the good work. I always felt the good baritones are rare commodity. Apropo, I still prefer the velvet voice of Zancanarro. (Here at 3.55 4.45 & last bar, I feel some strain and instability in the voice) Very good anyway. Tnx.
No jokes,my friend...Cappuccilli was really the last dramatica bariton voice...Bruson was always a lyric bariton, who efforted himself to sing dramatical roles...
while I feel Pons' voice is more beautiful, Capucilli really puts his whole heart into this aria. This recording is even better than the one of his in my video w/Carreras & Martón.
