Linux is ugly. So what if you use a buggy dock or make Linux look like an operating system that it isnt (Mac OSX) or use a buggy 3D effects thing, it's ugly. So what if you can customize it? The first thing I want to see when I get a new computer with Linux is something pretty. What do I get? A grey ugly top and bottom dock. So what if there's KDE? Why use something that can't even design a website properly without big huge fonts. KDE is buggy and annoying and not unique. Linux fails.
@TheJoeyzxc I'm using free software now to write this comment, and i'm sure it's not buggy and it does NOT look like a mac (i don't like the mac look), and 5 minutes before i was playing a 3D game totally smoothly. I'm using KDE 4.3 and it's not buggy, i'm using it without any problem...
sounds like your hardware fails bro. runs fine for me, ran better on my macbook than OS X did. Now on my desktop runs way way way better than windows 7 rc1 does. as for style, i find both OS X and faildows to be ugly as shit, my linux looks like my linux.
Why is Bill gates in a video about free and open source software! He's giving the message a bad reputation! Creating a relationship between proprietary and free! wrong! gave it one star!
You misunderstanded the video. Bill Gates was talking, a guy learned that Bill would talk there, so he came with a paper to show to peoples what is the best.

I thought Free software is where you can download and use it for free. And Open Source software is where it is not just free, but open to all communities and people can edit it, modify it, help with it's development? Free software doesn't mean you can modify it, is it?
Yes you can edit free software. Free software is kinda the same thing. The differences are: 1: Free-software-guys think of it as a human right to have the source available for everyone, open-source-guys think of it as a good way to improve the software. 2: Free-software-guys got big beards.
Open Source and Free Software mean the same thing. The term 'Open Source' was created to avoid that "free" ambiguity. The only difference is that Open Source (theoretically) isn't restricted to softwares.
Free Software gives the user four freedoms, the freedom to: 1) run the program for any purpose, 2) study how the program works and adapt it, 3) redistribute copies and 4) improve the program and release the improved copies to the public. Free software is not necessarily software that is "no cost", but instead software that gives users the freedom to copy, distribute and modify the software. A great deal of free software does not cost anything, however.
Amazing how stupid some people are. Erikvanasch is the prime one who posted about the "poor guy". That "Poor guy" is a self made millionaire in China, and he is doing JUST FINE and became some kind of hero because of what he did here. What he asked for "free software, open source" is a world wide movement by the computer people. Red Hat Linux (if you even know what that is) is the competitor of Windows that is open source to every software developers, and they support the logan "open source".
Err...That's what I actually said,stevenup7002!I was talking to Madfury about FLOSS and it's not true that it's communism. But it IS socialism and that is a good thing.Proprietary software will create morale issues especially when it comes to company portrayed illegal copiers and distributors as pirates.
Madfury:Free Software? And who pays the software engineers for their work? Stupid communists!
Lol you are the most stupidiest person i've ever known.Open source means you're allowed to copy, redistribute and modify and there are lots of open source software that is commercial.Take an example look at Sun Microsystem. They have money and they open sourced java. Now please, read wikipedia.
Lollyhole, its not communist, did you see anyone saying you have to use the GPL? Free Software is software which you have the freedom to edit. Open source software is software which has source code open to the community.
On paper, in 12pt Courier, I bet it's about 90kg lighter than that of Windows, too. If Microsoft ever want to look like the good guys again, they should open source everything but the current and previous kernel. An empty gesture, but they'd still look open, and things like Outlook, MSN Messenger, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office would all practically get free coding labour.
the topic is free software and open source. macOS is claimed to be more stable and more secure than windows (IMHO it is!), BUT it is neither open source, nor free software ;)
Chinese are communist, or at least they were not long ago. And Chinese copy everything they can: cars, clothes, satellites... and software. That's why they want open source.
And Mark Shuttleworth:
In 2001 he formed the Shuttleworth Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to social innovation which also funds educational and open source projects in South Africa, such as The Freedom Toaster.
If I say stupid things then most of the people think stupid things. Otherwise ask 100 people what they think about a product that has MADE IN CHINA writen on it's label.
yeahhhh!!!

freeware = proprietary software made free as meaning gratis.
free software= software that respects freedom, with source code available, as well as the ability to share, copy, and redistribute.
opensource= a way of promoting free software without mentioning political reasons and issues of freedom!

Red Hat Linux is still open source thru Fedora. RHL is the enterprise edition of Fedora. You get tech support for some amount.

Hey guy!
I respect you,but if you don't know about Chinese, don't say such stupid things.
Chinese are creative, and chinese have their own product and ideas.
Chinese are smart,if things are good,we can bring them in,not like you said 'copy'.
'Open Source' is the spirit of some people, but it doesn't represent all Chinese people's ideas.
