Maggie eh! Nearly killed me in the 80's & if you don't think the stress of not having employment when you leave school is a killer try asking a doctor. Just feeling sorry for our next generation of school leavers now this new lot are in again. I'm not politically motivated, just that I saw from an early age the lies from those in power. Spot on "just1boronut".
I'm confused... I have dreadlocks and white skin, and I pretend to speak in a Jamaican accent.
I'm not sure if I'm a racist or just a dick, I'm probably both, but I'm going to try and say "my nigger" to a black person in New York.... (I'm sure he will see the funny side of it) If I don't reply within the next few days you will know the nigger I tried it out on didn't agree with me
One in Ten is mistakenly cited as referring to the number of unemployed in the UK at that time. It is in fact a song about government statistics in general, and how politicians use them to de-humanise problems.
i loved the 80s and the goverment produced some of the greatest bands of all time, at least if you were on the dole you were alive, i remember labour and if they stayed on we would have had no electricty, no rubbish collections, fuck all and we would have starved to death and ended up being taken over by some roughe state..
i would rarther have 1980s conservative goverment than the current bastards.... 2.8 million on the fuckin dole... 2 million fuckers on the sick
it's a tough world biscuitcface2. i hate it when tops of the pops forced bands to mime their songs, and when people on you tube don't know the correct spelling of their / there / they're dependent on the context...
I've pondered this for years, and for the most part, prefer the miming. When TOTP went live, some of the performances were hideous. At least with the miming bands were free to muck about, sing into bananas, have their bass strings loose and flopping about, etc etc
Weird How This is Sung Exactly The Same on The CD So They Must Be Miming, Play The 2 Of Them In The Background AndThere Exactly The Same, I Hate It When Good Bands Mime There Own Songs
It is top of the pops biscuit....they had to mime, even poor old Maggie Thatcher couldn't get them to sing live....funny....she actually got into this subject...miming on Top of the Pops and Sheep Farming in the Falklands...her two big things.
fair point RADIOSHRINK, but you fail to notice one major point. The success of the group made them 40% tax payers, thus lining the pockets of the establishment they sought to sing about. Just like David Frost, UB40 became establishment.

Unrest and recession caused by having to resort to harsh measures in the wake of a period of horrificly poor leadership and embarrassing political failure by the Labour party of the late 70's. Anyone remember the winter of discontent? Oh, and Thatcher went on to record 3 general election wins, standards were raised, Britain became prosperous and Thatchers policies were vindicated. Respect.
when mrs t came to power in 79 all of the adults in my family were in full employment. by 1990 it was more like 50%. mrs t was great for the se of england. as far as the rest of the country was concerned she was a disaster. two of my uncles died very early due to health problems linked to un employment.
I'm constantly wondering the same thing! i think everyone's too busy topping up their tans or flashing their fake tits. I am working on changing that though - I have plenty to protest about ;-)
how right you are..............vanity is supreme , I thought Thatcher was bad enough but what the hell are we experiencing now............mind controlled wannabees everywhere. UB40 one in ten at least we had something in common

@just1boronut Thatcher ruined this country. It had problems before she came to power but they were tenfold under her.

UB40's finest hour, set against a Thatcherite Britain torn apart by civil unrest and recession. Why does no-one write good protest songs anymore...?
