This person was crazy for trying to contain a pet cobra...seriously...like Corn Snakes and Garter Snakes and such are fine but COBRAS? He was asking to get bitten.
Not really up on all the reptile rules but how in the heck does someone in the U.S. even have the chance to purchase something like this ? A rare Albino Cobra ??? GeeeeZzzzz where do you even get something like that ...legally I mean ??
i love snakes........... my uncle has a bow. i held it before and it's a very calm snke. i'm not sure if there poisionous or not but they can be very nice.
that's not as simple as it sounds. Some Antivenin is highly perishable and those are likely to be for the deadliest venoms--like Taipan, Boomslang, COBRA, etc.
Yeah, and "Semi-poisonous"....anyone got a definition handy for THAT??
the mistake was the type of Poisionous Snake, Cobras are some of the most dangerous snakes in the world, he's lucky it wasn't a King Cobra or a Spitting Cobra
I like snakes, I think they are cool and cute at the same time, but there is no way I would ever want to have a poisonus snake in my house. Even the kindest animal can bite sometimes.
Semi poisonous snakes have venom that can cause injury, but are usually not deadly. They can kill some creatures depending on their size, but they usually can't kill a full grown human, especially a full grown mn like this one on the episode.
according to my snake book asian albino cobras are NOT intended as pets. and even if they sometimes appear docile, you NEVER drop your guard with them. He should have put that thing into a bag or a box before doing anything to the cage.
I remember seeing on Nat Geo some dude who had a Black Mamba and got bit, I think it was in FL too I just remembered they had to use Cobra Anti-venom to save him, and then even 6 months later he was still in bad shape, Not something to fool around with.
This was taken from an off-network syndicated episode, so it was probably trimmed for running time. When this segment originally aired on CBS, it was part of an extended 90-minute episode.
ironmaiden12 you do relise that ur little gaboon you have that ur "affraid" to hold... 1 bite will most likly kill you......even with the antivenin theres a 90% chance of fatality
owning a venomous snake is quite risky :) when your gut instinct tells you to avoid a snake or avoid handling one, you're doing the right thing by staying away. snakes, venomous or not, domestic or wild, can become aggressive despite their usual docile behavior. so smart thinking on your part for not handling the viper
I don't get why he didn't put the snake into another cage in the meantime, rather than letting it slither around down his feet like that. Snakes are unpredictable, just like other wild animals or creatures. It was careless of him to think the snake wouldn't ever bite him. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. His odds weren't that good. If you want poisonous snakes, you should be prepared!
I can't help laughing at how an albino black rat snake is being used in place of the cobra during the cage shots. LAME!!
Also, why didn't Grant just pour fresh water from a pitcher or bottle into the cobra's bowl from a safe height instead of needlessly taking it out and handling it?
He also should've put the cobra in a secured garbage can or something during that time, or at least had his roomate supervising.
Most of all, Grant should have HAD ANTIVENIN available for this snake!
"What is a "semi-poisonous" snake? I thought they were either poisonous, or non-poisonous."
There are a variety of rear-fanged snakes, predominantly from the Colubrid family, which have very small fangs and have a mildly toxic saliva that is capable of subduing prey; yet are still harmless to humans or very nearly so.
Such species are in the midst of the evolutionary process.
The African Boomslang is the most notable exception; capable of delivering a lethal bite.
@srubi74 According to doctors, semi-poisonous means one w/ weaker venom than another.
But weaker venom makes no difference in a person who's allergic to snakes, b/c they'll have an allergic reaction that has nothing to do w/ weak or strong venom.
An allergic reaction results from the immune system's making a marker that reacts against allergen.
I just don't get why someone would want to own an animal that could so easily kill them. what is the appeal? I mean, yes, a dog could kill you too, but at least you can get to know a dog's temperment. Personally, I am a dog and cat person, right now I have a cat, and he bites me sometimes, but I don't have to worry that he'll kill me
For every snake handler / keeper, on the place that you have the venomous snake, there you have to keep the anti-venom (in right conditions of course), for me, an professional with snakes, its unbelievable, that you poses a venomous snake, outside of their habitat / continent, where every hospital, poses the anti-venom, but in your place, this animal is an exotic species, and the hospital don't have the anti-venom in stock!
I got that one when it aired on Odyssey in 2001. There's at least one segment I know I'm missing from this episode about Minneapolis trauma center staff. The TV Guide lists five segments for this episode, but I don't know if there was a 6th or not.

No, I think a taipan bite is more deadly. Cobras kill more people, though, because taipans are more rare and usually try to avoid people rather than attack them.

Every time I watch this, I wonder why he didn't keep tongs around, to remove the snake from it's pen? Also what would have happened if it was a far more dangerous type of Cobra like a Spitting or a King
I guess I was asking, because I was wondering what would happen if a Cobra or Cobras got loose and made their way into the wild, like Burmese Pythons have in the Everglades.
hey, how about controlling the HEAD of the snake, dumbass?
