i remember when i went to minnisota on my grandmas lake, i had perch in a cage, the next morning i come out to the dock n see 2 bowfin next to the cage, with a fish heads torn off! and the cage barely had any big holes!
I though we had caught a snakehead when I first seen em so we killed it knowing that snake heads were an invasive species but know I would actualy like trying to catch these fish! How do you do it? Are they like bass? And are they good to eat because I don't want the one we killed to go to waste
@MrJesposito95 How did you like the fight? If you caught one topwater, try with a black zoom trick worm texas rigged fish slowly across the bottom. I guarantee you will get something good.
why are people advocating kiling bowfin?they're great sport fish..pfft..bass are ok but the bowfin have been here for years. live and let live you fucktards...great catch by the way
@carag001 yeah man no problem i love bowfin too and i hate that people are so ignorant and put bass up on a pedastal like their the only things worthy to swim..here in VA all i chase is bowfin when i fish the swamp..which is all the time..keep fishing bro
@UnstoppableJae The problem with bowfin is they are a very destructive fish and they kill many other game fish destroying many nests, they also populate very fast and each one you kill you literally save thousands of other fish. Athough i do agree they are a great sport fish its better to kill them.
@xNewvy19x well that must be in your area..i more than disagree with you.bowfn are native fish and are a good sign of a healthy enviorment.i catch just as many bass etc.as i do bowfin in the waters that support both i personally would never kill a bowfin.its not better to kill any kind of native fish for reasons that people THINK are correct
@UnstoppableJae Yes you are right, They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem but people are spreading them to areas where they take over such as a few lakes where I live. and it is in these places where they are encouraged to be killed, not all places. Although I do disagree with killing them considering its our fault they are there in the first place. I haven't nor will I kill a bowfin, just trying to help you get a better understanding why some people encourage killing them
@UnstoppableJae bowfin fight much harder than bass.. hell anything fights harder than bass!! i don't see why people are so hell bent on catching them when there are so many other good fighting fish in south florida.
@miamiwax yeah the bowfin are one of the best fights in freshwater hands down..i love them..i wish people would show them more respect. i used to chase bass until i got hooked on bowfin..bass actually dissapoint me when i catch them now..bowfin are where the action is!
@caragi dont think we have white bass in washington, if you cought a smallmouth in florida it must have been small, washington has the best smallmouth bass fishing anyware
@UnstoppableJae I've thrown away 3 Bowfin, until I heard a lot of good stuff about 'em. Since then, I've released all my Bowfin. Don't listen to anyone about them being garbage fish, it's wrong.
@thebasshunter241 yeah they're great fish aren't they?..they bite in extreme heat or when its cold..just all around good game fish..im glad you educated yourself about them,i wish more people would learn like you did..
@jfrb0594 This is in the everglades off of 8 st. I am not sure if the bowfins are still there because it is pretty dead right now. We might get lucky and find them, I know where to stop along the road. Send me a message, maybe we can meet up!
My biggest bowfin was dead even at 28 inches and weighed 8.25lbs i caught ones 24 inches a 26 inch and a 27 inch and a 27 1/2 inch the other bowfins were smaller
if that was the biggest mudfish you ever caught i have caught bigger about 20+ pounds but couldn't get a weight in but yours was good cause i have never caught a pregnat one but my dad and grandpa found baby bowfin and then a 10 pound mudfish leaps out and grabs my grandpa on the finger and rippped the skin off but yours was about 14+ easy
@csxcujo My friend caught a 28 inch bowfin way bigger than this one. This is not my biggest though. Keep on looking in my videos and you will see it. I think this one was around 7-8 lbs. 14 lbs is too much. That story you told was funny. I have heard bowfin are pretty aggressive guarding the nests.
@nerfmaster234 ok well could you cite your source for this? or are you going off what other people pass of as credible information. they are not neccisarily a bottom feeding fish. also what carnivorous fish wont eat fish eggs? bowfin are more predatory than anything else and hunt small fish and animals more than they scavenge.
@nerfmaster234 bowfin arent even mentioned on that page. i just looked. also bowfin are an ancient fish, they've been eating the same thing for thousands of years. bass fishermen are just ignorant. most of your precious sportfish are stocked hatchery fish.
I caught a bigger one today that may threaten your record Nelson. I thought it was a bass when I was fighting it! 24 inches and 8 lb +. it was an absolute brute! Check out the video.
I got to get me one of those lippers I'm thinking of the one with the digital scale... Today was very difficult to weight the 7.2 pounder, I usualy use a bag for the bowfins and gars but this one did not fit...I think the bass are in deep stucture,,,,
I love bowfin, they fight like like fish twice their size and I've never caught a small one.

Love these Ancient fish. Nice one, I lost one about that big on my trip awhile back. they always break my line.
Dionysus2235 6 months ago
@Dionysus2235 Use braided line in 10 or 12 lb test and you will be fine. The funny thing is used to catch them using a texas rigged zoom trick worm.
