(if faramir betrays his father.. rohan wins.. becouse i think gondorians wuld lissen.. wait.. were forgheting boromir.. he does not die!)(i think boromir wuld be with faramir as brothers and gondor does not win)
ok i change my mind.. there evan.. rohan attacks gondor.. rohan looses..
gondor attacks rohan.. gondor loses.. why? becouse rohirims on the land of gondor wich has many trees and forrests will not be able to fight and offcourse they wont have a chance with minas tirith.. and with gondor attacking rohan its other way arround.. rohan has good tereains for attacks on gondor.. so there evan and i think id be a never ending war.. and matter also in the inside ( what will faramir do)
well.. overall gondor is better.. Rohirim are good at opened terain.. Gondor alse has good horsemen.. Rohirim had very good morele at Pelenor cuz of theoden.. without him i think id go bad.. gondor is better overall
On an open battlefield, Rohan would definitely win, but if they were to take turns as offence/defence within their best fortresses (Minas Tirith and Helms Deep), I'm pretty sure Gondor would win, mainly because their advancement in weaponry and armour (Trebuchets, better armour, etc.)
Gondor has a small fucking army, Minas tirith only knows 2500 soldiers, the osgiliath garnisons also have few soldiers. Rohan would slap them on the battlefield. But Rohan will lose if they attack Minas Tirith.
@H1pnot The greatest part of Gondor's armies doesn't come from Minas Tirith, but from the Fiefs: tens of thousands were serving the lords there. Of the Free Peoples, there was no doubt that Gondor was the strongest bastion: if it fell, Rohan and the lands behind it would also fall very soon.
@H1 not really, In the battle of pelennor fields Gondor had aprox 10,000 soldiers station'd in Minas Tirith. Plus the bulk of there army was else where as Lord Denethor was a corrupt fool who always did the wrong thing.
@boythatis1 No, they were mostly in the south, where Gondor was attacked by a fleet full of Umbar Raiders and Haradrim. They needed to defend against that too, and they didn't have a big fortified city there. Not that Denethor was so good but he still had some wits before the end.
@H1pnot first of all the great forces of gondor dont come from minas tirith.second minas tirith surely didnt have only 2500 soldiers.third the only way the rohirims would have a chance of winning was only if the rohirims had an enormous army of cavalry.hand in hand gondor wins
@mastermike95 What do you mean by man power? As in trebuchets and stuff like that? Because that isn't really man power... But one thing's for sure, the Rohan army is definitely more brave, and will follow their king to any end. Btw the only time they had Peasants fight was in Helms deep because the Rohirrim were banished, therefore having less soldiers available to them. I personally think that the average Rohan Soldier, and the Average Gondor soldier, would be a pretty even match.
Very Nice! I am a humongous fan of LOTR and tolkien in general! IT (ur vid) gave me a sense of Romeo and juliet except with much bigger families and stakes.
Ok guys don't just read one of my comments read them all from bottom to the top. Tell me what you think if anyone ever gets to this, did I make a decent plot about what would happen?
..." Eomer would tell himself many times, but the paranoia and chaos never truly erased from his mind, nor seeing Faramir and Eowyn dead together. Eomer eventually married, some royalty from Dol Amroth, but he could never look her in the eyes when she bore him his children during consummation, and he was grim for the rest of his years
Such are the fruits of war, what you fight for in the beginning you soon begin to lose honor for, and the victors were happier little more than the losers...
@pat5168 Very good story or plot or whatever. But you have a little error, Denethor wasnt a mad fool, and many people loved him but mavy after the war they may not love him like you say but still he was a wise man and wouldnt certanly send all those suicidal attacks against Rohan. Outside of that I enjoyed the few minutes of lecture.
@campusservant Well I didn't think Denethor intended on it being a suicidal attack, he meant to send them to gain a foothold in the Folde so that he wouldn't be hard pressed to defend his city. That's also why the outlying lands weren't fortified, Denethor intended on invading Rohan, not defending his own capital. Denethor knew that the Rohirrim would be rallied quickly so he sent the infantry with speed of the essence. But he still underestimated how fast it would take them to rally.
@pat5168 Nice plot story or whatever but you made a big mistake, Denethor wasnt a mad man or a fool instead he was a wise man who would not send his men to impossible missions. People loved him (but maybe after the war with Rohan he may loose that). Àpart from that I enjoyed the few minutes reading this. Very good story.
...Eomer, King of Gondor and Rohan united! He never had a lust for power, and if he didn't than there would surely be a civil war and much more suffering over the succession of Denethor since Faramir died. He couldn't do that...
And so it was, Gondor and Rohan united, Eomer as their king, but Eomer was joyless during his reign as king, so much treachery there was which led to him receiving it, and if his supporters were traitors of the last king, what does that mean for him? "I am not Denethor..
...Shortly after, she believed she had no right to be called Shieldmaiden since so many of her people died for her needlessly. Eomer sits atop the Throne in the Citadel, being the heir of Theoden, and wanting to avoid another Kin Strife the soldiers in the city proclaim that if once Rohan was ceded from Gondor to Eorl, would it not be fitting that the heir of Eorl unite them once again when the line of Gondor had failed? Reasonable, but Eomer spent much time thinking on the throne...
...Win renown for many years thereafter. Eowyn runs through the chaos of brother turning against brother while Minas Tirith is burning, seeking Faramir. Faramir is about to lead an attack on the Rohirrim but runs and embraces Eowyn, she sobs in his arms and she tells him to stop the attack he was about to lead, it's futile for him now. Faramir, driven with the choice of Eowyn and his own people, along with learning about the death of his father, throws himself on his sword point, Eowyn dies...
...And kill Prince Imrahil when he almost alerts the loyal guards. They then go down the seven levels, securing each level's gate and gaining more supporters, hopeful that the fighting is almost at an end. Fighting breaks out and the Rohirrim led by Eomer storm the first level but are met by numerous loyal Gondorians, many of those loyal to Denethor drop their weapons and surrender or join the Rohirrim. All but the knights of Dol Amroth surrender or betray their fellows. Their last stand will...
...Scale the mountainside and release the remainder of Rohirrim when they get over the walls, encountered by depraved watch guards, the soldiers HELP the Rohirrim and get much support from others from the Southern Coasts of Gondor who have grown to despise Denethor through a lack of empathy for the soldiers, idleness, and starvation. They split up, secrecy is key for the knights of Dol Amroth and many other men from the Pelennor are still loyal to Denethor. They murder Denethor in his sleep...
...Fields of the Pelennor if Denethor makes a move and the walls and archers and uselessness of horses if Eomer makes a move. Yet it proves more costly for Denethor, they are running low on food and the people have no love for him, any that they had is gone, they are starving and want the fighting to be at an end. Faramir talks to Denethor, saying that the more they wait the less chance they will have on the battlefield, and the people are growing uneasy. One pitch black night, Rohirrim spies...
...Rohirrim but they win the day. The situation for Gondor is looking grave. They have few cavalry left to match the Rohirrim after the defeat of Prince Imrahil and Eomer makes no move towards the city walls, intent on starving them into submission and living off of the crops far and wide in unprotected Gondor since almost all men able to fight are within Minas Tirith. A standoff ensues for a week, neither side willing to take action when if they do their enemy will have the advantage, open...
...Since Denethor is not just his father but his king, and would find it just as unspeakable as if it were proposed to Eomer himself for Theoden. Faramir asks about Eowyn and if she's alright, and Eomer takes great offense because of his over protectiveness with his younger sister. Faramir and Eomer end up only trading hostages, nothing more. The next day, battle commences once again, the cavalry of Minas Tirith with the knights of Dol Amroth prove to be almost more of a match for the...
...Dead Rohirrim who fought for her and begs Eomer to find a solution as long as no one is hurt any longer. Eomer agrees, and Faramir on the other side convinces Denethor to let him go with guards to meet in the no man's land for any possible negotiations they can agree on when word reaches Minas Tirith of Eomer's proposal. Eomer and Faramir meet and Faramir tells him that there would be peace if not for his grudge-holding father. Eomer hints at a possible coup, but Faramir rejects the notion...
...Driven back to Minas Tirith once the Rohirrim got order restored. I think Theoden could possibly die and then the leaderless riders would have gone straight to the walls within range of their archers, a sortie would have commenced and the riders would fall from arrows heavily until Eomer gained command and told them to retreat. A few days of no fighting, both sides suffered heavy losses and gather their dead to pay their respects to them and burn their funeral pyres. Eowyn weeps over the...
...But then after a few skirmishes the infantry that weren't ridden down and killed would have been sent in a rout back to Minas Tirith. Theoden would have stopped the Rohirrim from charging too close to the walls and would have made camp there, feasting off of the spoils of the Pelennor. But Denethor is committed to finishing something when he puts his mind to it, so a night time raid would have attacked the camps and both sides would have lost many lives, but the Gondorians would have been...
In this particular scenario I think that this is how things would have panned out. Many soldiers from Gondor's provinces would have been recruited to fight for Denethor. But they would have been taken against their will, meanwhile most soldiers would want to fight for their Shieldmaiden of Rohan and would get courage and loyalty from that. Denethor, being the crazy son of a bitch he is when he gets angry would have sent the infantry to fight first and get their asses handed to by the Rohirrim...
rohan would win many of the first battles, but as the war drug on, gondors weight would begin to show, but i'd rather be a knight of rohan then a knight of gondor
gondor would win because gandalf encourages them and rohan would lose because theoden never does something very right like in the helms deep battle he made even children go to war.
gondor would win because encourages and rohan would lose because theoden never does something very like in the helms deep battle he made even children go to war
Its rly simple. Gondor is the greater force cuz they have the Bigger army/equipment. But the soldiers of rohan have a much greater heart. why? Cuz they have a freaking king that inspires them. If u look at the Boromir part where he screams FOR GONDOR!. Thats the way the gondor soldiers should have been. But that fucking father of boromir/faramir (forgot the name). let his army to die. They had no spirit. and were all afraid.
@MrGuitarCover321 Of course Denethor was heavily demoralised in the original LOTR - that is because he had lost both his sons (his freakout when he saw Faramir wounded is justified because in the medieval times even a light wound that caused bleeding could infect and kill you easily) + that freaking Palantir bled him dry and drove him insane. Poor old bastard came to his mind right before fire caught his oiled coat!
@stalkerspredators lol you see, its funny, because they fled from Edoras and their other settlements to Helms Deep instead of waging open war, like the Gondorians did...ah funny man
@nastrael what you mean open war?when Gondor was fighting in Osgiliath it wasnt open war it was like a border fight but when Mordor attacked with its all strengh gondors Osgiliaths army was broken in 5 minutes and what they did they send 40 riders to retake it,it was funny dude maybe Gondor was very strong but in the end of the third age it was fucked up,Rohan didnt had open war cause its real army was fled but Rohan still had it instead of gondor
@stalkerspredators are you stupid? Osgiliath was only 1 front the Gondorians were fighting on, there was the naval campaign agains the corsairs of Umbar, the fights against Harad in the south, and the geurilla war in Ithilien. and when Mordor attacked Osgiliath in full force, at midnight, with tens of thousands of orcs the few hundred, maybe a thousand, defenders held out until morning/mid-day so at least 6 hours, more then can be said for Rohan who couldnt hold an epic fortress without help
@nastrael lol Teoden was a scared pussy, sure hes soldiers werent crying to death and fellow him untill the end, they was so scared thats why they charge giant mumaks in the book they got fucked up like 200000 orcs then rush easterling battalion like 18000 people and get destroyed it too, witch king the lord of nazgul killed Gondors prince in front of Minas Morgul and get terrored Gondor and almost destroyed Arnor but finally killed by Rohirrim woman,Gondor would be destroyed without Rohan
@nastrael Gondor had three campaigns, what campaigns?shooting from the trees and running to the waterfall its very brave, finally all three campaigns ran to Osgiliath and got fucked up by Mordor forces, iam not arguing about who is more stronger, definitaly it was Gondor but Rohans people always be more brave and they won without Gondor
@stalkerspredators dude they didnt run to the waterfall, that was their base of operations, they MASSACRED the Haradrim that they ambushed, like how the Silvan Elves fight, or even Rohan when they killed the Uruks with Merry and Pippin. and if were gonna talk about bravery, how about when Theoden was killed by The Witch King? where were all his men? fleeing with tails between their legs and leaving behind a trail of liquid gold and shame. sure the Gondorians were spooked but they held their own
@stalkerspredators and not to mention the epic fail that is Rohan's military leadership, sure Gondor's steward was a psychotic fuckup, but its military leadership was unmatched, Arnborn, Prince Imrahil and Faramir in comparison to Theoden and Eomer...Eomer ok hes good too but Theoden was an old pussy who was afraid of his own shadow. And the Rohan soldiers alone were total pussies, everytime they sahy something its "no hope" this or "were doomed" that
@nastrael that-s the movie, but in the book Rohan wanted to face Isengard armz at the Fords of the Isen, but there were at least 10,000 Uruk Hai and Dunland men there... ofcourse they fled to helms deep,it was the only way when they found out that Erkenbrand who was defending the Fords was defeated and nobody heard what happened to him
Uh Gondor would be f*cked. Rohan has a MUCH much bigger army than Gondor b/c of all the troops they can muster from the "countryside." I mean if the movies are any accurate indication then just look at how big Theoden's riders were when they came to Gondor's aid.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD First of all, the movies aren't an accurate indication, and they've never been. Also, Gondor can muster much larger forces: while Rohan thrives on an agrarian society, Gondor is much more developed: less % agrarian population means much more professional troops. Also, Gondor has a much larger population.
Rohan can muster 10.000 riders, and a few thousand infantry. Yet Gondor can muster many thousands more from the fiefs.
Plus Gondor has Minas Tirith, which Rohan can never breach. Rohan are better horseback warriors but they have practically zero siege ability. They're not as advanced as Gondor, and they don't have anywhere near as much wealth. Just compare their capital cities, Edoras is barely a city at all!
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Gondor kept 500 men in Osgiliath, 4000 in other provinces, 200 in ithilien, and 10.000 in Minas Tirith, if your talking about numbers, then Rohan would fail.
Gondor would win, no matter how good your cavalry are, a man on a horse cannot storm a walled city, the rohirrim infantry would be useless, plus does anyone consider the leadership, I would take Aragorn over Eomer any day of the week.
I do believe that Rohan might lose on numbers and may lose with equipment, but if you take a close look at the expressions on the face of the rohan soldiers in the movies, they all look like theyre shitting in their armor. I can't say I've seen a single Rohirrim that hesitated to charge. On the field of courage Rohan would kick Gondor's ass.
@gekhoofdigmens Rohan would lose in so many ways. Warfare is made possible by money, and Gondor has the best economy by far. Also, the movies aren't really a good source for the courage of the soldiers. PJ's interpretation of medieval warfare is as follows: cavalry owns everything. He couldn't have been more wrong. If cavalry was really that good, why could England beat France in the beginning of the Hundred Years War? How could the Saxons stand against Normandy until Harold was killed?
Gondor has elite guards, proper soldiers and cavalry to match the rohhirim. They have archers to defeat yeoman, rangers to conquer the infantry. Rohan has a big but woosen consist, Edoras and Helms Deep. Minas Tirith, Dol Amroth, Osgilliath and many more lands like Cair Andros and Belfalas. Rohan is bravehearted, but Gondor is G for Guardian. Arnor was the best in my opinion.
To stamp out the Rohhirim, meet them at the Druaden forest and bring in Rangers and Elite Tower Guards. The Warriors would be confronted with great Knights. 2
With cavarly under attack, Knights and Archers could draw them out. Soldiers would also provide ambushing for peasants. Archers would attack from afar and volley at Rohan Spearmen and Warriors.
Roham wins for coolness.... Gondor are just pussies in thick armour i mean wtf i would run in naked with my bare fists!!!!!!!!!!!! joke i would die if that happened you silly fools.
oh gosh..could you imagine the army of rohan on horse trampling all of gondors forces!! gondor would win if it was hand to hand combat like in cities...but on an open plain...rohan would dominate? Any comments??
@kaptinfancy Cavalry isn't exactly the all-powerful force that can trample any infantry formation. Against a well-prepared infantry-army, it's not likely to win. On the Pelennor, their strength was the surprise of their coming, but when the armies of Mordor recovered from the first shock, Rohan lost the advantage.
In history, we can see this fact: Azincourt (best known), Hastings, etc. When the armies were getting bigger, cavalry had less advantages, especially in a frontal charge.
@MasterBombadillo rohan lost the advantage because of the oliphants, they are designed to crush cavalry! understand that all the rohirim( which are only the cavalry of rohan ) are about 2500. with an open battlefield, even the entire gondor army could not keep up with the skill of such talented riders! they are not idiots, a frontal attack would be avoided, with the rohirim headed for the archers!
@ThelastSpartan234 Do you really think only the Mumakil did the job? They were a factor, that's true, but not the only one. Gothmog had send reinforcements from Osgilliath, and the Haradrim (and the other armies at the fields) were prepared to meet them. Against a well-prepared infantry force, a cavalry army such as that from Rohan, which is based on the early medieval cavalry, isn't as good as you think. The Rohirrim could slaughter the first army they met because of the effect of surprise.
@MasterBombadillo I must say, if there were no Mumakil at the Pelennor Fields the Rohirrim could have handled the orcs easily, even if there were orc reinforcements coming from Osgiliath. Let's say that Gothmog called upon a marching formation of Easterlings with their badass lances the Rohirrim would've been crushed. I do believe that in the third movie, the main factor really was the Haradrim army with their Mumakils.
@gekhoofdigmens So, you're arguing with the films as you're source? Well, I only argue by the books, because the films destroyed LOTR in so many ways, and the portrayal of an all-powerful cavalry force is one of them. In the books, the Mumakil were a factor, but not the main factor: the overwhelming numbers of infantry, prepared to fight cavalry, did stop the charge (and they were send by Gothmog from Osgilliath). The first encounter was a success due to advantage of surprise.
@ThelastSpartan234 A good commander, and Gondor has many, could perfectly create a tactic to protect the archers. For example the English tactic: archers in front, infantry behind them, and if the cavalry begins to charge, archers retreat and infantry moves a few meters forward, forming a shield-wall which is very handy against cavalry. And Gondor has also cavalry, and while Rohan is mainly light, Gondor's is heavy. They could perfectly intercept the riders for a while.
@ThelastSpartan234 Without a frontal attack, another attack is very difficult: try to move around an army while they aren't fighting and attack them from the rear.
Also, the Riders are divided in 100 eoreds of at least 120 men, so their full force is at least 12.000 cavalry. The important settlements would have infantry. But Gondor's force is likely much greater, numbering 20.000-30.000, taken from all the outlands. But Rohan is mainly militia, Gondor can afford greater standing armies.
gondor would win, but it would be a bloody war, the Knights of Rohan have no match, each Rohirric man has a hardy warrior spirt, but gondor has a bigger population and a well trained army, the first gondorian attacks would be pushed back but Rohan couldnt maintain the full muster.
i would still fight for rohan i would give anything to be a royal guard
if there was no ring or sauron then rohan wouldnt exist. the land known as rohan was given to rohans ancestors by gondor for helping them defeat the armies of sauron and saving them. the condition for this land was that rohan would help gondor in a time of need... still its a good idea
it would be a close fight and both sides wouldprobably be crippled in the war, but Gondor would win. Their soldiers are more expierienced, better equipped and versitile. Rohan has had only the dunelandings and isengard to fight recently while Gondor has Rhun, Harad and Mordor to keep at bay constantly. And Rohan is an almost exclusivly mounted force Gondor is much more balancedd... and their cavilry is better. The Knights of Dol Amroth would definitley win in a 1 on 1 fight w/ Rohirrim
Rohan has a small change to win, i'm afraid. If you see the Gondor's equipment, Gondor can break down Helm's Deep with theire trebuchets easily.
Nevertheless it won't be easy to defeat Rohan. At first Rohan has a more experienced soldiers and horses. Gondor's soldiers aren't older then 20 - 25 years. The third reason is that Rohan has the White wizard and artillery too 2:39, according this vid.
At the other hand, Gondor has Isengard. (Saruman was only a house keeper, but he was tempted by evil
@trebuchet21 More experienced soldiers? Where does that idea comes from? Gondor soldiers already had to fight against Mordor and Harad their whole life, and they're on the front lines. You absolutely can't state Gondor soldiers are only 20-25 years. Also, Rohan's army is mainly militia, while most of Gondors armies are made from professionals, and has some powerful bloodlines: the Dunedain (stewards, rangers) and Elven (Dol Amroth).
With 'experienced' I mean more hardened in life. When you see those Gondoraian soldier's faces in the movie you can see they're not older than 30 years max. Those soldiers also didn't fought theire whole lives. I strongly believes Gondor doesn't have war all the time (lets say; 2 Ages). Besides, why cant the Istari fight? Apart from this, I did not say Rohan will win such a war (which is unlikely to happen).
@trebuchet21 Arguments based on the movies are a waste of time. Not part of the lore.
The enemies of Gondor and Rohan (but like I said, Rohan is more like a militia, and only a necessary amount of people are called upon in situations, which makes the big mass not that experienced), were attacking Gondor and Rohan much more then you think. At the Council of Elrond, Boromirs, and Elronds, words seemed to include Gondor had fought many years against their enemies during Boromir's lifetime.
@trebuchet21 Also, the experience of Boromir and Faramir aren't just from a few battles. They are hardened soldiers and experienced commanders. At the time the really big attacks from Mordor commenced, Boromir showed a bravery which isn't only because a brave nature, they had to fight against an army led by Nazgul, which was an experience they never felt before (so Boromir certainly fought a lot). Also, the Haradrim and Easterlings aren't peaceful Men either.
@trebuchet21 As for the Istari, they were forbidden by the Valar to use their powers, save for situations of great need. They were sent to lead the Free Peoples, give them council against Sauron, not to the battles for them. Saruman betrayed the Valar, and was replaced by Gandalf as mightiest of the Istari, loosing almost all his powers (except his voice), when Gandalf removed him from the order, and when he died, he couldn't get his powers back, but was a powerless spirit, dwelling on earth.
@trebuchet21 And my comment wasn't to counter you're conclusion, but to counter you're arguments. I agree with you Gondor would likely win: their economic base is much more advanced, whereas Rohan is agrarian.
Wow! In my pocket... I didn't expect such a reaction... I barely have anything to say against it. It's clear you've done more research and observations than I did so far. It's for sure that Boromir and Faramir fought a lot. At the other hand, you mentioned two very experienced soldiers. Don't you think at least 20 % of the Gondorian soldiers aren't fighting voluntary? Those soldiers aren't as experienced as the professional ones.
@trebuchet21 Why do you think 20% of the Gondorian army aren't voluntary soldiers (I'm not saying they aren't forced to fight, but I'm saying much more then 20% are probably volunteers). Maybe some lesser fiefs, like Anfalas and Lamedon don't have a professional army, but that's no indication they aren't fighting voluntary. In fact, those from Lamedon came to Minas Tirith without leader, or at least one not worthy to mention.
@trebuchet21 To clarify my first statement: they're volunteers as soldiers, but don't want to fight. But to nuance that view: Middle-Earth isn't the peaceful world, with much danger to fight wars.
I like both rohan and gondor pretty equally but i just cant see the riders breaking through the gate into the city of minas tirith i think they would all be arrowed down from the walls of minas tirith.also if theres no mordor or any thing then that means gondor still has minas ithil and osgiliath wont be in ruins ,ive got to hand it to gondor
this is what i'd imagine the battles between the byzantine empire of manuel comnenus and the hungarian empire at the time. between these two in the video, hard to say. gondor certainly has many more troops, who are proffesionally trained, but rohan can get together quicker and ride circles around them. also, kind of hard to besiege a place with only horses, while i believe gondor had some cavalry forces from its fiefs. epic to watch though
I like how Denethor does nothing but gripe and eat the whole video.
Even though "Gondorians" are supposed to be better educated and have a better defense, Rohan has more troops, horsemen, and (if Theodin was never possessed by a third party), a better leader.
well guess you are right :S but my final defense is that rohan was once only one region of gondor so they cant have as mush fighters and resources and by most fearsome troops i didnt mean dunedain cause there are so few of them u couldnt go war just with dunedains. elves are leaving middle-earth so i didn't count them. and its been while since i read the books so i don't remember well prince imrahil. but i am gonna read all the books starting hobit soon so i hope my knowledge expands rohan rules
@SmiQuAlmighty Rohan wasn't a part of Gondor since the Rohirrim came. But maybe I overstated the few numbers a bit. I think Rohan has 10 tot 15.000 warriors. Gondor could field the double, but they were more spread, and in the War of the Ring, Gondor was attacked in the South too. The Dunedain (this is plural), were indeed very small in numbers. But the Elves did stand against Mordor. Mirkwood and Lorien attacked Dol Guldur, after being attacked from there, so they still had a good military.
Gondor was once strong but now it's just shattered and weak. Rohans rohirrim is the strongest army in middle earth. They say that orcs feel no fear but just look at uruks in helms deep and orcs in pelennors field after rohirrim arrives. Gondor maybe better armored but they dont have the heart that rohan has. in pelennors fields 6000 rohirrims killed about 40-80 000 orcs and 6 000-12 000 haradrims...
@SmiQuAlmighty Even in these days, Gondor's defences are the best in Middle-Earth. I agree they are weak compared to the past, but yet they managed to do much harm to Sauron. Rohan didn't have the numbers that Gondor probably had, nor the fine skills of Morthond archers, the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. And don't overestimate the power of cavalry.
@MasterBombadillo well rohan dont have the numbers they have the skill and are the most fearsome troop in middle-earth. and how gondor has make lots of harm to sauron??? when sauron send his real army gondor didnt have a chance agains them. if gondor is as strong as you say they wouldnt have been totally fucked up when rohirrim came. and yea rohirrim kill atleast half of the orcs in pelennors field. and best defence pffft they just got the biggest fortress.
@SmiQuAlmighty Most fearsome warriors? Come on, from the position of the common Orc, the most fearsome warriors are the Elves. Under the Men, the Dunedain of the North are much more skilled then any other. Those from the south are also more fearsome, and have the experience of many years fighting in enemy territory. And the Knights of Dol Amroth have Elven blood in their veins, and gave hope to the Gondorian soldiers, even while the Nazgul made them desperate.
@MasterBombadillo Actaully I think that the Easterlings are the best human fighters in Middle Earth , because remember T.A years 1856 when they killed Narmacil and in 1899 when they killed Ondoher and his two sons and in 2510 when they almost defeated the army of Gondor lead by Cirion until the Eothed attacked and won the battle for Gondor?
@MultiKillerBot Killing a king isn't that hard actually, a single arrow can kill one. Also, the attack of 1856 was a complete surprise, with warriors never seen in Gondor (the Easterlings aren't a uniform people, so they are certainly not the best fighters, you may name confederations and people, but not the whole region). In 1899 Gondor defeated them at Dagorlad, and it was a crushing victory. Ondoher fell when the Easterlings returned in 1944, with their allies from Harad and Khand, not alone.
@MasterBombadillo Oh yeah it was 1944 not 1899 thanks for the correction. But about Gondor vs Rohan you have to assume that many people have never read the books and only saw the movies only. I think that you should use some arguments from movies more then from the books because most people's opinions were based from the movies.
@MultiKillerBot I never, and I mean never, use arguments based on the movies. I'm a Tolkien purist, so arguments from the movies are out of question. But you've got a point, most people here don't know anything about the books. Mwah, not my problem ;)
Yes, Gondorian soldiers in the movies were kind of weak. But this revisionist interpretation of PJ is why I don't use movie-based arguments. And actually, I can defend Gondor: you can't siege cities with cavalry. Rohan would be massacred.
@MasterBombadillo Actually you cant defend Gondor because its true you cant use cavalry to besiege a city like Minas Tirith . However Gondor cant besiege Edoras or and other Rohan cities that are in the middle of a big plain. One reason is if Gondor tries to siege Edoras they will most likely get flanked by Rohans horsearchers and melee cavalry group. The arrows are very armour piercing and Rohan's cavalry is like much stronger than Gondor's cav. and infantry. So its a stalemate.
@MultiKillerBot But then again, you can't defend Rohan. First of all, Rohan's light cavalry isn't an invincible force when used against infantry. Used in hills when against infantry who got the high-ground, or in forests or marshes, they will loose their advantage, the types of terrain that can be found in Gondor. And when they siege Minas Tirith (actually Rammas Echor), they will loose, and can't go any further. It can be that Rohan would loose in near their border, like we saw with Theodred.
@MasterBombadillo Who said Rohan's got light cavalry ? Their cavalry is heavy cavalry. "Used in hills when against infantry who got the high-ground, or in forests or marshes, they will loose their advantage."Um no offense but that goes to Gondor's army as well. Infact I never heard an army who got an advanatage when they lost the high ground or when in forests or marshes. All the types of terrain found in Gondor are found in Rohan too because it once belonged to Gondor. Both are even still.
@MultiKillerBot Heavy cavalry? Come on, do you know how much training that would need, how expensive such army would be? Really, it's out of question Rohan had a all-heavy-cavalry force. They certainly had some, but those were the elites (like medieval knights).
I don't see what you mean by your second part, I said Rohan would loose advantage there, so those battles goes to Gondor, also Rohan isn't the same a Gondor, it was part of it, but it's mainly plains, while Gondor is much more "hilled".
@MasterBombadillo I hope you know that the people of Rohan were nomadic , meaning they depended on horses alot and all those years with the horses paid off plus alot of battles against the invasions. What I mean is that all the terrain advantage Gondor has can be used against it as well. Actually Rohan has hills too like the misty mountains.
@MultiKillerBot When I read LOTR, I didn't get the idea Rohan had that many horse archers, nor their arrows where "very armour piercing", so I would like sources here. Also, Rohans cavalry would stand against Gondors: a strong, very heavy cavalry (Dol Amroth for example) against a lighter cavalry force. Also, Rohan was actually familiar with infantry (Fords of Isen in UT). But Gondor would outmatch them easy. And I don't think Gondor would be so stupid to let Rohan use their cavalry advantage.
@MasterBombadillo I dont think Rohan would be stupid to let Gondor use their Infantry advantage as well. The knights of Dol Amroth were strong and made a great cav. force however they would be outnumbered like 2-1 and their cav. is only heavy cavalry whereas Rohan has the elite cavalry. If you want the resources you have to read the battles very carefully.
@MultiKillerBot Only heavy cavalry? Elite cavalry? Come on, are you seriously saying Rohan had an army of 10.000 heavy or elites? It was more like a militia (very well trained though, but not armoured like elite warriors). Also, they were not fully nomads (Edoras is a city for example, Helm's Deep gave home to many men,...). At most, their people existed partly out of herdsmen, partly out of farmers and others. Rohan has hills too, I agree, but not the rough areas of Gondor: look to the maps.
@MultiKillerBot Also in 1944, Earnil defeated both Harad and the Wainriders. So actually, Ondoher lost because of the two fronted attack. In 2510, reinforcements from the south of Gondor were attacked by Orcs, so again, it wasn't the full power of Gondor. Really, during the reign of Cirion, Gondor was attacked on all possible fronts, from the shores of Anfalas to the Argonath.
@MasterBombadillo For example people can say that Rohan has the cavalry advantage however your counterargument is that Gondor has blah, blah, blah. However from a movies perspective you clearly sa Rohan had the superior cavalry advantage however you cant use anything for Gondor's defense because you clearly saw that Gondor's troops got massacred in the movie.
@MasterBombadillo Ondoher lost probably because of the chariots and cavalry of Rhun. This was 1944 as how it happend. Ondoher takes the Northern amy of Gondor and fights the Easterlings, Earnil takes the Southern army and fight the Haradrim .Ondoher loses but Earnil wins over the Haradrim and later the Easterlings. It wasnt both Harad and Rhun attacking Ondoher though.
@MultiKillerBot The Wainriders didn't use cavalry, only chariots (and those were only used by their leaders). Rhun armies are mainly infantry I think. They were at the Siege, but not described for having much cavalry. But then again, they did had horse archers. But it was Harad who actually had a great cavalry force. My comment on the coalition was to show that it wasn't the full potential of Gondor that appeared on the battlefield to counter the Wainriders.
@MasterBombadillo Well Harad did have a great cavalry force but it was their mumakil which would turn the tide of the battle. "My comment on the coalition was to show that it wasn't the full potential of Gondor that appeared on the battlefield to counter the Wainriders." They were lead by their king and his son (well sons because Ondoher didnt knwo his other son was comming).
@MultiKillerBot It wasn't the Mumakil that turned the tide, it was just that the enemy numbers were far too great. No cavalry army can keep running over their enemies until the end of the battle. Because of this, Eomer wanted to make a last stance upon a hill, unmounted.
Yeah, and the King and sons always lead the full power of a country (*cough*). Come on, they wouldn't let Gondor be undefended, also, the battle was fought in Rhovanion. How much time did they have to recruit from the fiefs?
@MasterBombadillo The battle was fought in Dagorlad to be more specific. Eomer made a last stand on the hill unmounted because jhe though the corsairs were comming.
@MultiKillerBot No, it was north of the Morannon (and he had his two sons with him the whole time). It was the battle of 1899 that was fought on Dagorlad.
It was indeed the Corsairs that made Eomer make this decision, but do not forget Gothmog let the armies of Sauron hinder Rohan to join forces with Gondor. But my point was that he did it because he was outnumbered, you strengthened my point. The Corsairs aren't cavalry you know.
@MasterBombadillo If they were cavalry then it would have bben worse. No it was 1944 not 1899 that was when Calimehtar defeated the Easterlings but with the Rhovanion rebellion I mind you so it wasnt totally his victory.

- Rohan pwns Gondor in the field very hard
H1pnot 4 months ago
@H1pnot Are you sure Minas tirith only had 2500 soldiers ? That would have been kinda sad.
RepublicofChina1000 3 months ago
@H1pnot The greatest part of Gondor's armies doesn't come from Minas Tirith, but from the Fiefs: tens of thousands were serving the lords there. Of the Free Peoples, there was no doubt that Gondor was the strongest bastion: if it fell, Rohan and the lands behind it would also fall very soon.
MasterBombadillo 3 months ago in playlist LOTR
@H1 not really, In the battle of pelennor fields Gondor had aprox 10,000 soldiers station'd in Minas Tirith. Plus the bulk of there army was else where as Lord Denethor was a corrupt fool who always did the wrong thing.
boythatis1 3 months ago
@boythatis1 No, they were mostly in the south, where Gondor was attacked by a fleet full of Umbar Raiders and Haradrim. They needed to defend against that too, and they didn't have a big fortified city there. Not that Denethor was so good but he still had some wits before the end.

@H1pnot first of all the great forces of gondor dont come from minas tirith.second minas tirith surely didnt have only 2500 soldiers.third the only way the rohirims would have a chance of winning was only if the rohirims had an enormous army of cavalry.hand in hand gondor wins

GONDOR VS ROHAN
1) Standard Infantry EDGE - gondor
2) Cavalry EDGE - Rohan
3) Archers EDGE - Rohan (able to shoot accurately horse back and throw spears)
4) Logistics - Gondor (more manpower, bigger fortress)
5) Leaders - Rohan (Denethor is a dumbass)
WINNER ROHAN
(Overall Rohirim adapts better to enviornment and better leadership cuz Denethor is a dumbass )
(However Gondors Trained troops superior over Peasant infantry hurts Rohan)
mastermike95 5 months ago
@mastermike95 What do you mean by man power? As in trebuchets and stuff like that? Because that isn't really man power... But one thing's for sure, the Rohan army is definitely more brave, and will follow their king to any end. Btw the only time they had Peasants fight was in Helms deep because the Rohirrim were banished, therefore having less soldiers available to them. I personally think that the average Rohan Soldier, and the Average Gondor soldier, would be a pretty even match.

@pat5168 Very good story or plot or whatever. But you have a little error, Denethor wasnt a mad fool, and many people loved him but mavy after the war they may not love him like you say but still he was a wise man and wouldnt certanly send all those suicidal attacks against Rohan. Outside of that I enjoyed the few minutes of lecture.
campusservant 6 months ago
@campusservant Well I didn't think Denethor intended on it being a suicidal attack, he meant to send them to gain a foothold in the Folde so that he wouldn't be hard pressed to defend his city. That's also why the outlying lands weren't fortified, Denethor intended on invading Rohan, not defending his own capital. Denethor knew that the Rohirrim would be rallied quickly so he sent the infantry with speed of the essence. But he still underestimated how fast it would take them to rally.
pat5168 6 months ago
@pat5168 Nice plot story or whatever but you made a big mistake, Denethor wasnt a mad man or a fool instead he was a wise man who would not send his men to impossible missions.

@stalkerspredators are you stupid? Uh Gondor would be f*cked. Rohan has a MUCH much bigger army than Gondor b/c of all the troops they can muster from the "countryside." I mean if the movies are any accurate indication then just look at how big Theoden's riders were when they came to Gondor's aid.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 8 months ago

I do believe that Rohan might lose on numbers and may lose with equipment, but if you take a close look at the expressions on the face of the rohan soldiers in the movies, they all look like theyre shitting in their armor. I can't say I've seen a single Rohirrim that hesitated to charge. On the field of courage Rohan would kick Gondor's ass.
gekhoofdigmens 9 months ago
@gekhoofdigmens Rohan would lose in so many ways. Warfare is made possible by money, and Gondor has the best economy by far. Also, the movies aren't really a good source for the courage of the soldiers. PJ's interpretation of medieval warfare is as follows: cavalry owns everything. He couldn't have been more wrong. If cavalry was really that good, why could England beat France in the beginning of the Hundred Years War? How could the Saxons stand against Normandy until Harold was killed?
MasterBombadillo 9 months ago
Gondor has elite guards, proper soldiers and cavalry to match the rohhirim. They have archers to defeat yeoman, rangers to conquer the infantry. Rohan has a big but woosen consist, Edoras and Helms Deep. Minas Tirith, Dol Amroth, Osgilliath and many more lands like Cair Andros and Belfalas. Rohan is bravehearted, but Gondor is G for Guardian. Arnor was the best in my opinion.

oh gosh..could you imagine the army of rohan on horse trampling all of gondors forces!! gondor would win if it was hand to hand combat like in cities...but on an open plain...rohan would dominate? Any comments??
kaptinfancy 10 months ago 2
@kaptinfancy Cavalry isn't exactly the all-powerful force that can trample any infantry formation. Against a well-prepared infantry-army, it's not likely to win. On the Pelennor, their strength was the surprise of their coming, but when the armies of Mordor recovered from the first shock, Rohan lost the advantage.
In history, we can see this fact: Azincourt (best known), Hastings, etc. When the armies were getting bigger, cavalry had less advantages, especially in a frontal charge.
MasterBombadillo 10 months ago
@MasterBombadillo rohan lost the advantage because of the oliphants, they are designed to crush cavalry! understand that all the rohirim( which are only the cavalry of rohan ) are about 2500. with an open battlefield, even the entire gondor army could not keep up with the skill of such talented riders! they are not idiots, a frontal attack would be avoided, with the rohirim headed for the archers!
ThelastSpartan234 10 months ago
@ThelastSpartan234 Do you really think only the Mumakil did the job? They were a factor, that's true, but not the only one. Gothmog had send reinforcements from Osgilliath, and the Haradrim (and the other armies at the fields) were prepared to meet them. Against a well-prepared infantry force, a cavalry army such as that from Rohan, which is based on the early medieval cavalry, isn't as good as you think. The Rohirrim could slaughter the first army they met because of the effect of surprise.
MasterBombadillo 10 months ago
@MasterBombadillo I must say, if there were no Mumakil at the Pelennor Fields the Rohirrim could have handled the orcs easily, even if there were orc reinforcements coming from Osgiliath. Let's say that Gothmog called upon a marching formation of Easterlings with their badass lances the Rohirrim would've been crushed. I do believe that in the third movie, the main factor really was the Haradrim army with their Mumakils.
gekhoofdigmens 9 months ago
@gekhoofdigmens So, you're arguing with the films as you're source? Well, I only argue by the books, because the films destroyed LOTR in so many ways, and the portrayal of an all-powerful cavalry force is one of them. In the books, the Mumakil were a factor, but not the main factor: the overwhelming numbers of infantry, prepared to fight cavalry, did stop the charge (and they were send by Gothmog from Osgilliath). The first encounter was a success due to advantage of surprise.
MasterBombadillo 9 months ago
@ThelastSpartan234 A good commander, and Gondor has many, could perfectly create a tactic to protect the archers. For example the English tactic: archers in front, infantry behind them, and if the cavalry begins to charge, archers retreat and infantry moves a few meters forward, forming a shield-wall which is very handy against cavalry. And Gondor has also cavalry, and while Rohan is mainly light, Gondor's is heavy. They could perfectly intercept the riders for a while.
MasterBombadillo 10 months ago
@ThelastSpartan234 Without a frontal attack, another attack is very difficult: try to move around an army while they aren't fighting and attack them from the rear.
Also, the Riders are divided in 100 eoreds of at least 120 men, so their full force is at least 12.000 cavalry. The important settlements would have infantry. But Gondor's force is likely much greater, numbering 20.000-30.000, taken from all the outlands. But Rohan is mainly militia, Gondor can afford greater standing armies.
MasterBombadillo 10 months ago
gondor would win, but it would be a bloody war, the Knights of Rohan have no match, each Rohirric man has a hardy warrior spirt, but gondor has a bigger population and a well trained army, the first gondorian attacks would be pushed back but Rohan couldnt maintain the full muster.
i would still fight for rohan i would give anything to be a royal guard

if there was no ring or sauron then rohan wouldnt exist. the land known as rohan was given to rohans ancestors by gondor for helping them defeat the armies of sauron and saving them. the condition for this land was that rohan would help gondor in a time of need... still its a good idea

it would be a close fight and both sides wouldprobably be crippled in the war, but Gondor would win. The Knights of Dol Amroth would definitley win in a 1 on 1 fight w/ Rohirrim

btw why is the white wizard of the white city fighting with the rohirim

Lordmaartmans 1 year ago
Rohan has a small change to win, i'm afraid. If you see the Gondor's equipment, Gondor can break down Helm's Deep with theire trebuchets easily.
Nevertheless it won't be easy to defeat Rohan. At first Rohan has a more experienced soldiers and horses. Gondor's soldiers aren't older then 20 - 25 years. The third reason is that Rohan has the White wizard and artillery too 2:39, according this vid.
At the other hand, Gondor has Isengard. (Saruman was only a house keeper, but he was tempted by evil
trebuchet21 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 More experienced soldiers? Where does that idea comes from? Gondor soldiers already had to fight against Mordor and Harad their whole life, and they're on the front lines. You absolutely can't state Gondor soldiers are only 20-25 years. Also, Rohan's army is mainly militia, while most of Gondors armies are made from professionals, and has some powerful bloodlines: the Dunedain (stewards, rangers) and Elven (Dol Amroth).
And the Istari can't fight in this battle.
MasterBombadillo 11 months ago
@MasterBombadillo
Apart from this, I did not say Rohan will win such a war (which is unlikely to happen).
trebuchet21 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 Arguments based on the movies are a waste of time. Not part of the lore.
The enemies of Gondor and Rohan (but like I said, Rohan is more like a militia, and only a necessary amount of people are called upon in situations, which makes the big mass not that experienced), were attacking Gondor and Rohan much more then you think. At the Council of Elrond, Boromirs, and Elronds, words seemed to include Gondor had fought many years against their enemies during Boromir's lifetime.
MasterBombadillo 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 Also, the experience of Boromir and Faramir aren't just from a few battles. They are hardened soldiers and experienced commanders. At the time the really big attacks from Mordor commenced, Boromir showed a bravery which isn't only because a brave nature, they had to fight against an army led by Nazgul, which was an experience they never felt before (so Boromir certainly fought a lot). Also, the Haradrim and Easterlings aren't peaceful Men either.
MasterBombadillo 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 As for the Istari, they were forbidden by the Valar to use their powers, save for situations of great need. They were sent to lead the Free Peoples, give them council against Sauron, not to the battles for them. Saruman betrayed the Valar, and was replaced by Gandalf as mightiest of the Istari, loosing almost all his powers (except his voice), when Gandalf removed him from the order, and when he died, he couldn't get his powers back, but was a powerless spirit, dwelling on earth.
MasterBombadillo 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 And my comment wasn't to counter you're conclusion, but to counter you're arguments. I agree with you Gondor would likely win: their economic base is much more advanced, whereas Rohan is agrarian.
MasterBombadillo 11 months ago
@MasterBombadillo
Those soldiers aren't as experienced as the professional ones.
trebuchet21 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 Why do you think 20% of the Gondorian army aren't voluntary soldiers (I'm not saying they aren't forced to fight, but I'm saying much more then 20% are probably volunteers). Maybe some lesser fiefs, like Anfalas and Lamedon don't have a professional army, but that's no indication they aren't fighting voluntary. In fact, those from Lamedon came to Minas Tirith without leader, or at least one not worthy to mention.
MasterBombadillo 11 months ago
@MasterBombadillo
I didn't say 20 % or less are volunteers. You're propably right. I can't say anything against it anymore...
trebuchet21 11 months ago
@trebuchet21 To clarify my first statement: they're volunteers as soldiers, but don't want to fight. But to nuance that view: Middle-Earth isn't the peaceful world, with much danger to fight wars.

this is what i'd imagine the battles between the byzantine empire of manuel comnenus and the hungarian empire at the time. between these two in the video, hard to say. gondor certainly has many more troops, who are proffesionally trained, but rohan can get together quicker and ride circles around them. also, kind of hard to besiege a place with only horses, while i believe gondor had some cavalry forces from its fiefs. epic to watch though

SmiQuAlmighty 1 year ago
@SmiQuAlmighty Rohan wasn't a part of Gondor since the Rohirrim came. But maybe I overstated the few numbers a bit. I think Rohan has 10 tot 15.000 warriors. Gondor could field the double, but they were more spread, and in the War of the Ring, Gondor was attacked in the South too. The Dunedain (this is plural), were indeed very small in numbers. But the Elves did stand against Mordor. Mirkwood and Lorien attacked Dol Guldur, after being attacked from there, so they still had a good military.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
Gondor was once strong but now it's just shattered and weak. Rohans rohirrim is the strongest army in middle earth. They say that orcs feel no fear but just look at uruks in helms deep and orcs in pelennors field after rohirrim arrives. Gondor maybe better armored but they dont have the heart that rohan has. in pelennors fields 6000 rohirrims killed about 40-80 000 orcs and 6 000-12 000 haradrims...
SmiQuAlmighty 1 year ago
@SmiQuAlmighty Even in these days, Gondor's defences are the best in Middle-Earth. I agree they are weak compared to the past, but yet they managed to do much harm to Sauron. Rohan didn't have the numbers that Gondor probably had, nor the fine skills of Morthond archers, the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. And don't overestimate the power of cavalry.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo well rohan dont have the numbers they have the skill and are the most fearsome troop in middle-earth. and how gondor has make lots of harm to sauron??? when sauron send his real army gondor didnt have a chance agains them. if gondor is as strong as you say they wouldnt have been totally fucked up when rohirrim came. and yea rohirrim kill atleast half of the orcs in pelennors field. and best defence pffft they just got the biggest fortress.
SmiQuAlmighty 1 year ago
@SmiQuAlmighty Most fearsome warriors? Come on, from the position of the common Orc, the most fearsome warriors are the Elves. Under the Men, the Dunedain of the North are much more skilled then any other. Those from the south are also more fearsome, and have the experience of many years fighting in enemy territory. And the Knights of Dol Amroth have Elven blood in their veins, and gave hope to the Gondorian soldiers, even while the Nazgul made them desperate.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Actaully I think that the Easterlings are the best human fighters in Middle Earth , because remember T.A years 1856 when they killed Narmacil and in 1899 when they killed Ondoher and his two sons and in 2510 when they almost defeated the army of Gondor lead by Cirion until the Eothed attacked and won the battle for Gondor?
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot Killing a king isn't that hard actually, a single arrow can kill one. Also, the attack of 1856 was a complete surprise, with warriors never seen in Gondor (the Easterlings aren't a uniform people, so they are certainly not the best fighters, you may name confederations and people, but not the whole region). In 1899 Gondor defeated them at Dagorlad, and it was a crushing victory. Ondoher fell when the Easterlings returned in 1944, with their allies from Harad and Khand, not alone.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Oh yeah it was 1944 not 1899 thanks for the correction. But about Gondor vs Rohan you have to assume that many people have never read the books and only saw the movies only. I think that you should use some arguments from movies more then from the books because most people's opinions were based from the movies.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot I never, and I mean never, use arguments based on the movies. I'm a Tolkien purist, so arguments from the movies are out of question. But you've got a point, most people here don't know anything about the books. Mwah, not my problem ;)
Yes, Gondorian soldiers in the movies were kind of weak. But this revisionist interpretation of PJ is why I don't use movie-based arguments. And actually, I can defend Gondor: you can't siege cities with cavalry. Rohan would be massacred.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Actually you cant defend Gondor because its true you cant use cavalry to besiege a city like Minas Tirith . However Gondor cant besiege Edoras or and other Rohan cities that are in the middle of a big plain. One reason is if Gondor tries to siege Edoras they will most likely get flanked by Rohans horsearchers and melee cavalry group. The arrows are very armour piercing and Rohan's cavalry is like much stronger than Gondor's cav. and infantry. So its a stalemate.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot But then again, you can't defend Rohan. First of all, Rohan's light cavalry isn't an invincible force when used against infantry. Used in hills when against infantry who got the high-ground, or in forests or marshes, they will loose their advantage, the types of terrain that can be found in Gondor. And when they siege Minas Tirith (actually Rammas Echor), they will loose, and can't go any further. It can be that Rohan would loose in near their border, like we saw with Theodred.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Who said Rohan's got light cavalry ? Their cavalry is heavy cavalry. "Used in hills when against infantry who got the high-ground, or in forests or marshes, they will loose their advantage."Um no offense but that goes to Gondor's army as well. Infact I never heard an army who got an advanatage when they lost the high ground or when in forests or marshes. All the types of terrain found in Gondor are found in Rohan too because it once belonged to Gondor. Both are even still.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot Heavy cavalry? Come on, do you know how much training that would need, how expensive such army would be? Really, it's out of question Rohan had a all-heavy-cavalry force. They certainly had some, but those were the elites (like medieval knights).
I don't see what you mean by your second part, I said Rohan would loose advantage there, so those battles goes to Gondor, also Rohan isn't the same a Gondor, it was part of it, but it's mainly plains, while Gondor is much more "hilled".
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo I hope you know that the people of Rohan were nomadic , meaning they depended on horses alot and all those years with the horses paid off plus alot of battles against the invasions. What I mean is that all the terrain advantage Gondor has can be used against it as well. Actually Rohan has hills too like the misty mountains.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot When I read LOTR, I didn't get the idea Rohan had that many horse archers, nor their arrows where "very armour piercing", so I would like sources here. Also, Rohans cavalry would stand against Gondors: a strong, very heavy cavalry (Dol Amroth for example) against a lighter cavalry force. Also, Rohan was actually familiar with infantry (Fords of Isen in UT). But Gondor would outmatch them easy. And I don't think Gondor would be so stupid to let Rohan use their cavalry advantage.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo I dont think Rohan would be stupid to let Gondor use their Infantry advantage as well. The knights of Dol Amroth were strong and made a great cav. force however they would be outnumbered like 2-1 and their cav. is only heavy cavalry whereas Rohan has the elite cavalry. If you want the resources you have to read the battles very carefully.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot Only heavy cavalry? Elite cavalry? Come on, are you seriously saying Rohan had an army of 10.000 heavy or elites? It was more like a militia (very well trained though, but not armoured like elite warriors). Also, they were not fully nomads (Edoras is a city for example, Helm's Deep gave home to many men,...). At most, their people existed partly out of herdsmen, partly out of farmers and others. Rohan has hills too, I agree, but not the rough areas of Gondor: look to the maps.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot Also in 1944, Earnil defeated both Harad and the Wainriders. So actually, Ondoher lost because of the two fronted attack. In 2510, reinforcements from the south of Gondor were attacked by Orcs, so again, it wasn't the full power of Gondor. Really, during the reign of Cirion, Gondor was attacked on all possible fronts, from the shores of Anfalas to the Argonath.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo For example people can say that Rohan has the cavalry advantage however your counterargument is that Gondor has blah, blah, blah. However from a movies perspective you clearly sa Rohan had the superior cavalry advantage however you cant use anything for Gondor's defense because you clearly saw that Gondor's troops got massacred in the movie.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Please excuse me I really have to go finish my homework we will finish this as soon as possible.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Ondoher lost probably because of the chariots and cavalry of Rhun. This was 1944 as how it happend. Ondoher takes the Northern amy of Gondor and fights the Easterlings, Earnil takes the Southern army and fight the Haradrim .Ondoher loses but Earnil wins over the Haradrim and later the Easterlings. It wasnt both Harad and Rhun attacking Ondoher though.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot The Wainriders didn't use cavalry, only chariots (and those were only used by their leaders). Rhun armies are mainly infantry I think. They were at the Siege, but not described for having much cavalry. But then again, they did had horse archers. But it was Harad who actually had a great cavalry force. My comment on the coalition was to show that it wasn't the full potential of Gondor that appeared on the battlefield to counter the Wainriders.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo Well Harad did have a great cavalry force but it was their mumakil which would turn the tide of the battle. "My comment on the coalition was to show that it wasn't the full potential of Gondor that appeared on the battlefield to counter the Wainriders." They were lead by their king and his son (well sons because Ondoher didnt knwo his other son was comming).
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot It wasn't the Mumakil that turned the tide, it was just that the enemy numbers were far too great. No cavalry army can keep running over their enemies until the end of the battle. Because of this, Eomer wanted to make a last stance upon a hill, unmounted.
Yeah, and the King and sons always lead the full power of a country (*cough*). Come on, they wouldn't let Gondor be undefended, also, the battle was fought in Rhovanion. How much time did they have to recruit from the fiefs?
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo The battle was fought in Dagorlad to be more specific. Eomer made a last stand on the hill unmounted because jhe though the corsairs were comming.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot No, it was north of the Morannon (and he had his two sons with him the whole time). It was the battle of 1899 that was fought on Dagorlad.
It was indeed the Corsairs that made Eomer make this decision, but do not forget Gothmog let the armies of Sauron hinder Rohan to join forces with Gondor. But my point was that he did it because he was outnumbered, you strengthened my point. The Corsairs aren't cavalry you know.
MasterBombadillo 1 year ago
@MasterBombadillo If they were cavalry then it would have bben worse. No it was 1944 not 1899 that was when Calimehtar defeated the Easterlings but with the Rhovanion rebellion I mind you so it wasnt totally his victory.
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
