Wow. Nobody commented on this. On the screen before Gato there is a Pink bag on the table. You can use that to full-heal for free. You didn't need to buy Tonics or learn Aura early.

my games keeps freezing when you go through the portal, you get them wavey purple lines and it keeps replaying the music. so i have todo all of the mini games to get hrough this?

With the 'Guess the Person' minigame, all you need to do is follow Piette, which is easy because Piette will always be the character closest to the screen while the other two cross behind him. If you then need to pick another character, Wedge will ALWAYS be the leftmost of the other two characters and Vicks the rightmost.

The cat side quest is pretty much just making sure there's always cat food in Crono's room. Then the cats will reproduce and you can get a total of 11 cats, the last one being blue or something.

Heh, I've never done the cat quest either. And I always did the mimic minigame much later in the game when you're trying to get a certain chap back.

You said you weren't going for anything like that, but it seems to be a perfect game of some sort for me. I'm surprised you're not buying a Lode Sword from Melchior or something, haha.

Not really going for a perfect game, but I like to do things as early as possible.

I actually did buy the Lode Sword as early as possible once, but then I found out you get one later anyway, so it's really pointless :P

Medina Village equipment could be good though since it's really good at that point in the game (but also really expensive). I remember considering it on my LL playthrough but couldn't beat the guards without levelling up.

It is until you beat both Magus and Ozzie - I don't know if you can do that early enough for the equipment still to be useful though.
