@simionTheOne i seem to recall it might have featured on the Japanese Whispers E.P. released around 1982/1983. Also on the same vinyl is "The Upstairs Room" and "The Dream". The producer Steve Nye who also produced Blue Monday by New Order apparently worked on this (there are simalarities). I think RS wrote & recorded this mostly on his own after the demise of the band (temporarily) following the Pornography Tour. I have this on vinyl at home if you want any more info
The original version of "Lament" had different lyrics and came as a flexi-disc given away with the magazine Flexipop. Then a re-recorded version featured on the 12" version of "The walk", which was the version that was included on the 1983 compilation "Japanese whispers".
Interesting to hear Robert remark that this is the "Goth" bit of the set! Lovely version of 'Lament'. I have never heard a live version of this song before. I just added this to my list of favourites.

I would name "The Walk" EP to their best recorded piece ever! My old vinyl is still playing at home at times, and everytime it strikes me what a masterpiece it is! 26 years later...
The original was recorded by Robert and Lol and some machines so why would your proposed inclusion of Tolhurst and Anderson have made this live 1990 version any better?
Simon's bass couldn't sound any better

b-side of primary
Oloferne8181 2 years ago
tbh this song is much better than primary if you ask me :I
& i'm talking about the official songs
when they played primary in orange it sounded at it's best but the official doesn't sound as strong as lament to me
simionTheOne 2 years ago 2
Not of "Primary". It's from period of "Let's go to bed", "The lovecats" and "The walk".

@Oloferne8181
noooo! it was put in "japanese whispers", in 1983! Primary was published in 1981 and its b-side was "descent".
Peace :)

the cure play lament live in 1983 (club and festival), 1990 (festival pleasure trips)
jupiterattraction 2 years ago
wow I didn't actually know they ever played it live
great although I prefer their sound and performances from 1979-1982 (especially 1980-1982) the most

This is one of the most dreamy romantic songs that The Cure produced, and that's saying a lot.

The Cure's B-sides from the mid to late 80's are better than most of the stuff they've released in the last few years.

Only Boris could play this song with the right soul for the song. Cure used to play this one with Andy, but to be true, the drums werent' right.
Boris is the best drummer in Cure history.
