For all those confused - the little girl is 'miming' to Shreya Ghoshal's voice. She is playing a young Urmila Matondkar. The music composition is by the one & only Himesh Reshammiya. Jai Mata Di!
I dont know what it is about this bhajan that strikes the chords of my soul, and based on everyone else's comments, I know it is common. I think it truly embodies the shakti one feels when worshiping lord shiva (or any other form of divinity). Jai shiva omkara...Jai durga mata
I BOUGHT THE SOUND TRACK TO THIS MOVIE CAUSE OF THE BHAJAN THE LITTLE GIRL IS SINGING AND IT IS NOT ON THE C.D. SO DISAPPOINTED CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE CAN I GET IT IT HAS TO BE THE SAME VOICE NOT THE SAME BHANJAN DIFFERENT PERSON I WANT THIS ONE EMAIL ME
What a great combination of worlds; the world of historical ancient india, and the india of popular culture; the worlds of devotion and peity shown in the context of a child's development into adulthood. the world of internal and external beauty and sensation.
Could someone please explain to me why some of the lines in this movie are spoken in English? Were they overdubbed, or is this just a result of India being ruled by the British for so long?
English is very commonly spoken in India and it's not uncommon for people to switch among two or even more languages in conversation. Usually if an Indian-made movie is dubbed, it's dubbed in another Indian language for release in another part of the country. (Telugu movies are frequently dubbed in Hindi for example.) Dubbing in English isn't unheard of, but it's not common. I don't recall a lot of English dialogue in "Banaras", though there may have been some when Urmila meets the doctor.
Actually "Water" was made by expatriate director Deepa Mehta and was actually filmed in *both* English and Hindi (and shot in Sri Lanka because of political pressure). Each scene was shot in English and then re-shot in Hindi. Strangely enough, the girl who plays the lead doesn't speak *either* language and simply learned her lines phonetically as she needed to deliver them. There have been other films made in India that were filmed in English though. Notably and recently Slumdog Millionaire.
Thank you once again! I had been aware of the political pressure (as it was documented on the DVD), but did not know that the girl could not speak either of the languages. I have not sen Slumdog Millionaire, as my tastes tend to gravitate toward more obscure Indian films with a decent spiritual or moral message.Any other films like this one that you might recommend?
this may the be the most beautiful bhajan i have ever heard. and this video is so perfect for it. the simple innocence and purity of a little girl praising divinity and growing into a woman who still holds to her faith is as beautiful as it is powerful.
NICE
