  • A great song, it may be hip hop or rap but this is what I call spirit. Yes Lorenzo, the cops would have taken a shot at you, me or any Ogitchita(Warrior).

  • Very Gosh Dang Good! Wow, what an intense song. Yous paint the picture as it is and send an important message to all Indigeneous people. Best dam song I've heard yet. Meequetch!

  • Wab Kinew should be ashamed of himself for promoting pure lies and his so called music career. Good Boy, come on. How about the truth???? A known gangster who got what he deserved in the end. Karma. How about that. Just ask all the victims who Dumas touched in his life. Yes, that even includes Grandma. She had to call the cops on him and a warrant was issued. Dumas was no angel. That line is bang on. The real hero is the cop who had the courage to pull the trigger.

  • Mr. Wab Kinew you are using your Manitou-given talents to speak powerful words! Miigwetch for speaking out on the systemic murder of our young people ... and btw Troy Westwood looked hot in this video! LOL!

  • He was such a good boy?? he did nothing wrong?? am i missing something here?? He attacked the Police if i remember correctly ..

  • rest in peace cousin miss you lots ..

  • how could anyone not like this song... fuck u all who dont!!!

  • neone know who did that amazing piece on that dudes arm of the aboriginal guy

  • @VisionsInSmoke Hi, I am pretty sure that's a picture of Chief Sitting Bull, a wise and powerful leader of the Cree people in Alberta (?) in the 1800s. Cool, huh?

  • fuckin rights NATIVE PRIDE

  • awesome song, way to represent Peg city!!

  • DUMAS did sucker punch the first officer. He was being escorted out of the yard he was hiding in. Most likely he was hiding because of the warrant or just because he was a local criminal. That is the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts. Talk to the native homeowner where DUMAS hid, and he will tell you he was scared DUMAS was going to stab him. The knife fell out of his jacket during the fight. Check the court records and transcripts to prove the details and the warrant.

  • I think people need to hear the truth. DUMAS was no angel. On that day, he had a warrant, consumed drugs, had a screwdriver in his pocket, had a large knife up his sleeve. DUMAS was a gang member. On that day, he sucker punched the first officer who was escorting him out to the back lane. The large knife fell out of his sleeve during the fight. He was later pepper sprayed, he refused to drop the screwdriver and continued to attack. In the end, he made his own decision.

  • Bullshit!! "On that day, he sucker punched the first officer who was escorting him out to the back lane" And why was the police officer "escorting" him in to the alley? NOBODY is buying your bullshit stories, we all know he was assaulted and stood up for himself and killed because of SHITTY CORRUPT police work that is so ever famous in Winnipeg, stop lying! And SHAME on you for talking negatively about someone who was passed.

  • He was being escorted to the lane to be arrested. The original officer was by himself and wanted to be visible. Dumas had a warrant and lied about his name. Dumas was high on dope. Dumas had a large knife up his jacket. The knife fell out during the fight. Dumas also had a screwdriver, just in case he needed to steal a car or stab someone. Dumas tried to stab a native guy on Dufferin during this whole encounter. Check that out. Maybe read the Blackrod articles, they are close to the truth

  • @WpgJohnBlack aye, fuck u , those are LIES

  • Sometimes the truth hurts. Someday you will see that.

  • @WpgJohnBlack i would already no that, but i think thats fabricated

  • @WpgJohnBlack you kno what who neeed to hear ur bs stories no cares what u say that was my lil cousin and he didnt deserved to die..so0o stay off this shiit if u dont like it ..

  • @WpgJohnBlack you kno what who neeed to hear ur bs stories no cares what u say that was my lil cousin and he didnt deserved to die..so0o stay off this shiit if u dont like it ..

  • Then you should know, your cousin was a gangster. Think hard, what colour of bandana was in his pocket???

  • Was the police officer such a terrible aim that he had to kill the young man? Regardless of however this turns they need to be better trained. I don't have problems with police myself, but how do you expect natives to trust? Societies that have been stripped and conquered don't really react positive and friendly. Take a good look at history, it's up there with the worst horror stories in the world. Either way this song has great melody and lyrics. It's so good to see our own people up there.

  • The cop had good aim. In the inquest, two rounds to center mass. The cop did as he was trained. Stop the threat.

  • c.i.p mathew dumas forever missed but never forgotten

  • OMG I LOVE THIS! SO VERY BEAUTIFUL!

  • I worry everyday for my kids... I already lost my brother.. he was murdered in the streets of peg city for his shoes, & jewellery... now I have a son & I pray & I cry thinkin of what could be

  • This song is awesome. People that are criticizing it aren't listening to the words, they are just feeling the feelings. Peace starts at home. If you don't have a home, thats the crime! If you don't have someone to turn to for help, thats the crime. Our youth need strong supporters, not judges and juries.

  • Wab, I think, is a good role model in advocating peace and a collective working toward reconciliation, from all sides. This is what actually improves human action--not superficial blame and indifference. I appreciate, your defense, though of the police. That's a tough job, that despite imperfection and racial over-generalization deserves respect. I don't think Wab is opposed to this. I think he's opposed to how both sides are interacting. After all, they say Dumas was "no angel" too.

  • Wab makes a claim about 'the situation' as a product of history at 1:07-1:08, so I think the 'can of worms' you wish to avoid, is in the context of this song. If we're determined, the attributions of blame you demand 'be accepted' & use to condemn Wab don't make any sense. If we're determined we're only responsible in the sense that if someone teaches us to see the world differently, we can respond differently in the future.

  • @MrBlue204 Of course it would have been GOOD for Dumas to put down the screw driver. My point is that given who he was, in that situation, it would have been IMPOSSIBLE for him to do so. Equally, the officers involved COULD NOT have done otherwise. We don't have free will. We 'act' based on who we are (beliefs, desires, biology) in a situation. History forms our beliefs--the part of us most amenable to change, and it's at the core of this song. Do you think human action is based on magic?

  • @Cdiddyna: Kids do bad things when they live in a world that doesn't provide them with the supports and interventions needed to do good things. The free will myth is a cheap trick used to duck our responsibility to help each other out and work things out as a community--which, I think is this song's contribution to society. If you wonder why kids do bad things, ask what we're doing as a community to change a historical context that expresses racism in its indifference to suffering.

  • @thewinnipegcircle Dude. Cdiddyna said it well. Dumas should have dropped the damn weapon and stopped advancing on the officer. Period. Regardless of the historical context of why Dumas was a thug at the time,or living in the ghetto(NorthEnd). That's a while different can of worms you and I both know exceeds the context of Wab's dumb song. It is another blatant "poor us" cry from another racist Aboriginal who won't accept blame for one of his own, and blames the police instead. Bad role model.

  • @Cdiddyna: When you "make your own choices" you either make them based on something or based on nothing. If you make them based on nothing, they're arbitrary and you have no control over them. If they are based on something, then they are caused by something that is prior to the choice, that is not chosen, like beliefs and desires in a context. On either possibility, you've never made a choice individually. No one ever has. It's a kindergarten Christian myth used to resent the less fortunate.

  • How about someone writes a song about accountability and contributing to society? how about excuses and playing the race card isn't working . this song is irresponsible and is a role model telling gangsters its not there fault for making their own choices is just taking a few steps back over and over again.

  • gunna367, gangsters live the life of victimizing for a living, hurting killing stealing, drugs, cartheft, home invasions the list goes on forever, they risk getting shot by other gangsters and yes when they dont listen to police and charge at them with weapons they risk being shot by police. I find it hilarious that gangsters victimize hundreds of people a day and crrrrrrryyyyy when one gets what he/she deserves. I never said shoot everyone, but sometimes it happens if u keep pushing

  • I hear Winnipeg's Most is getting Bob Cameron for their next hook.

  • The interesting question, I think and the more interesting theme of this song is--where are we headed next? What are we doing to interact peacefully with each other, to change the inhumanity in our history.

  • On an historical determinist picture, you can grant that in some sense, we are all innocent, that we are the expression of a world of forces beyond our control. Despite this we can still hope for peace and reconciliation through understanding and the revising of our beliefs toward a common sense of our value as humans. This means working together to overcome very real racism which still permeates our world. Bullets don't belong, and, in some sense, both sides are innocent.

  • @MrBlue204 I don't know Wab, Left-foot and Lorenzo's intentions, but if you ditch the presupposition of free-will in favour of a picture of human action driven by determined beliefs and desires in a context, you can at least make sense of the chorus without having to assume that there's nothing wrong with picking up a weapon. If what we do is determined by who we are in a situation, you can notice how particular ways of interacting can cause situations such as the tragedy described to arise.

  • I trust (hope) this is not the type of message you intended to convey, and that your next project will be in honour of the Officers (of all ethnicities) who have suffered serious emotional and physical harm, doing their best to protect you, Mr. Westwood, Mr. Chan, Mr. Singh, Mr. Sinclair, Mr. Jones, …people of all ethnicities, from the people who commit violent crimes, yes, of all ethnicities…

  • That when confronted by police officers, and you feel cornered, it’s acceptable to brandish an edged weapon and confront them (after being pepper sprayed and have numerous Police Officers yelling quite clearly that if you don’t stop you will be shot)???

  • I just did a google search on Police Officers being stabbed with screwdrivers...and to no surprise, I found many incidents of this happening. I find it troubling, Mr Kinew, that being a person who considers himself a role model, you would create a song in which you state that Mr Dumas "did nothing wrong", and the bullets that potentially saved the officers life "did not belong". What's the message here, that the Officer should have let Dumas continue advancing on him until he got stabbed?

  • I was raised to accept responsibility for my actions. Dumas made a decision to take part in a criminal act. He was then chased by the Police. He then decided to pull out a screwdriver and advance on the officers +fail to follow directions. I know the officers involved in this shooting did not wake up that morning and decide to shoot him, but Dumas DID decide to put himself in that position. It's not about race, its about the decisions that criminals make!!!

He is responsible for the outcome.

  • finally a native person blaming the police for something wow thats refreshing. Its all the cops fault not the people commiting the crimes thats for shizzle gangsters. I say no accountability for criminals only excuses will help.

  • @cdiddyna yea your right, lets just shoot and murder all misguided teenagers!!!! white black red yellow...just shoot em.....theres a solution.....get real

  • This is a meaningful song and props to Wab and Leonard.

  • how is that possible when wab kinew is a reporter for cbc ? ..he must know alot about that :/

  • bammamarion the point im trying to make is - thats not murder. Thats the police doing their ugly job. And I wont fault them for it, Ive lived here all my life and in the last 20 years Winnipeg has gone to hell.

Im not going to talk about the other things you mentioned because I haven't heard of them, except the deaf wood carver (that was in the USA).

  • @Akrim10 winnipeg going to hell isnt Native peoples faults...its your entire communities fault for not coming together and building racial barriers and making people becoming divided and loosing a sense of community. btw polic in canada and the USA do target Natives/Blacks/Hispanics. So don't act like they are innocent.

  • @crosebudmang - Where did I say it was natives fault? But hey if you want to use cliches; what are these "racial barriers" you speak of? Are natives prohibited from going where they want and doing what they want in the boundaries of the law? Are they not clothed, fed, housed and provided education?

Canada is not the Deep South of the 1960s... so please don't cry racism mindlessly to me.

  • Google the story... 2005 home invasion in the north end of Winnipeg by a group of gun carrying aboriginal males. Police see Matthew Dumas (matching the description) and he runs, they chase him. When they catch up with him he draws a screwdriver, they tried pepper spraying him, repeatedly telling him to drop the screw driver, Dumas kept coming so they were forced to shoot him. Dont take the polices word for it, this is from witnesses.

  • Not trying to stir controversy, but the police officer was aboriginal (Metis) himself... I too would like to believe that peace is possible.

Parents need to teach their children to listen to the police, like them or hate them. For the sake of their own safety... so that sadness like this is not repeated.

  • @Akrim10 I'm not firmiliar with this case, but police time and time over murder indigenous people...whether its driving them out to the country and knocking them out in snowbanks to die, beating them to death etc....not to mention the recent shooting of the deaf woodcarver who died with bullets in his back because he never heard the cops directions...I have heard RCMP officers brag about beating "Indians" and the Calgary officers were just busted rounding up homeless natives in a van n beating
