Ichigo's was "awoken" when he almost turned into a hollow during his training to recover his lost soul reaper powers at the beginning of the saving Rukia Arc. Also, Vizards and Arrancar are pretty equal. Ichigo is just exceptionally strong, and always has been. Even the Vizards were afraid of his hollow form, and they were the ones training him to master his hollow.

While ichigo did fall first, he did more damage to Kenpachi and at the end of the fight, had his sword in 1 piece. Kenpachi, however, did not.

In your scenario because your opponent died you got the victory but that wouldn't have been the case if he just past out after you.
