No doubt, Kool Keith and Ced Gee (for his innovative use of the SP12- first time a sampler was used ever in hip-hop- not to mention his inimitable creative techniques he created in manipulating his samples) were light years ahead of the competition. The landscape of hip-hop was forever changed when the UltraMagnetics came on the scene. Period.
3:09 Well they call me Kool Keith, the lady's relief/No alias rapper, or Vulcan chief ... if he only knew how many nicknames he would come up with 26 years later.
@Mohammets apples and oranges is comparing a spaceship to a bike... not two rappers from the same city, same era that both are very lyrical driven MC's with aggressive battle style rapping.
kool keith is god...hands down...his style has always been ahead of it's time...this song was in 85 and the lyrics are still on some other shit...keith is the greatest...
@atl2maryland And he still got better after Octagon. I'll take Project Polaroid or Diesel Truckers over Octagon any day. Dr. Dooom 2 and the album he did with 54-71 were wild too.
On another note, I thought I was the only guy around putting him up against Rakim and KRS. But then again, they're TOTALLY different, so it's kinda apples-to-oranges.
The truth is that Keith just doesn't get the respect he deserves from the hip hop community. It's bullshit.
yo thanks for posting..I lost my underground album that I found back in the days when I use to dig, I got it at a salvation army in jamaica, queens - lucky. These BX mcs where ill on the science of mcing. HIP HOP forever! I am looking for an UltraJoint that was called the ..ussywrecker or something like that..I will keep on searching..paz. C
Best years of hip hop in mine humble opinion, 1982 - 1986 (the neon light years) FRESH! This track was way ahead for it's time (lyrics). I know ,i lived it.
Keith is dead nice lyrically, but I would not say that he is better than R. The R's a rolling stone....who's thought don't break. I'd say R displays a more on-point, stick to the topic flow - based on what I've heard of both MC's. No doubt, they both incredible.
I mean yea Rakim's style was packaged in a way that would appeal to more people. I felt like Kool Keith when he was UMC's always stayed on topic.. the topics were just more abstract.
Aw, man. This shit has under 1,000 views and no-talent ass-clowns like Little Wayne, T-Pain and Soldier Boy (to name just a few) are selling tons of records? Makes me ashamed of what hip-hop/rap has become. Long live Kool Keith!!!

Possibly, Rakim had more of a badboy image going for him while UMC's did some innovative shit. Unfadable lyrics.
