  • Yes, they do need help and sympathy or at least empathy because something is not right in their mental well being and they helplessly suffer in many ways. In this instance it's not about cats or the struggle to be humane and save lives because the reality is simple to calculate. They avoid public criticism by falsely identifying their activities as part of popular admirable trends and why not, society has barely recognized their mental disease, far be yet a cure. Ignorance here hurts everyone.

  • Thank tou Humane Society for all that you do for the animals.

  • during one of my breakdowns i gave two of my most beloved cats to an organization that was supposed to provide homes for them.

    this doubles my guilt.

i'm so sorry buddy and monster.

i can never make it right. it was like abandoning two trusting toddlers. they had no idea.

i'm so sorry. i have constant guilt and nightmares.

i so wish i had a pet now. i'm so lonely but i do not deserve to ever have another after what i did.

  • @jen8933 I'm soo sorry to hear about your loss of Buddy and Monster. I know it's terribly devastating to lose or have to give away a pet! The sorrow and guilt can be unbearable at times! I hope that they find really good homes and i hope you find the help that you need and that you feel better too!

  • @jen8933 I know how you feel. I had to leave my dog at the shelter when she got sick and was dying. We had just lost her mate a month before and after that her cancer over took her. God has a plan for them. Take you time and dont rush into anything. It took 3 years for me to get a new dog. The right one will come that will help to heale you. That is what my Zoe has done 4 me. I will prey for your hart to heal. God has a plan to those 2 babies of yours. They maybe just what some onelse needs. luv

  • @jen8933 Please don't blame yourself. You thought what you did was right.

  • 0:23 This kitty was in one of the commercials with celine dion in the background.

  • YouTube just doesn't like the idea I might be right once in awhile!

  • so they put the animals to sleep not much of a solution "we've got a better place for you"...yeah...right

  • @aliengtr

would you rather suffer your whole life ur just get put to sleep ? just getting it over with

  • @aliengtr thier in heaven

  • those people need to be in jail for a long time.

  • wow!

  • Too bad they will kill the cats that no one wants.

But yeah thats too many cats ;)

I love how they always want to JAIL people in America. Holy geez...

  • CATS RULES THE WORLD :D

    =( poor cittiez

  • bonner county HaHa!

  • What they said at the end really should get you thinking - Why do people even give their pets to these "shelters"? I mean, normally you would take at least a little care that your cat ends up in a safe place, wouldn't you?

  • How can anyone call that mess a shelter?

  • Good God, those poor kitties! The orange tabby with the broken leg was especially hard to watch, and learning that they had to put down some of them.:(

  • 400!?!?!! I knew a lady whose roommate had 20 and I thought that was alot!!!

  • Alamogordo NM animal shelter is this bad, they wont help animals that have broken hips unless someone adopts them. We rescued a kitten that was dehydrated, and covered in fleas. They told us it was dirt-places that go out of their way knowingly hurting animals should be prosecuted to the full extent, those who just dont have enough money need the support of the community to save these animals. Never should any animal suffer.

  • What's sad is that the way animals are raised on factory farms make these conditions look like heaven. If you don't think animals deserve to live like this don't eat conventional meat.

  • What i've always wanted to do, is buy a big ass house, with a big ass basement, and then get an apartment, I get the apartment, the animals get the house, and I stay at the house most of the day. Each animal will be trained, before a new one can come in. Basic people skills, and getting along with other animals.

  • I guess I should have read the name before commenting, OOPS

  • Poor cats. :( Being a huge cat lover myself, this is painful to watch..

  • Lets stop all this hand holding and really get these people the help they need or the justice these animals deserve. they would have been better off on the streets, picked up by people who can care for them and actually lived long happy lives.

  • Oh my gosh :'(

  • one cat= cute... 5+ more AUTOMATICALLY equals mangy filthy animal collection. i don't care if they were pure breed cats

  • they probably put the animals too sleep afterwhile anyways like spca does.....cruel

  • LOL?

  • 2012 ftw

  • sounds like my mother!! She hoards cats and dogs and thinks more of THEM then she does me or my brother. It is a discusting MESS and she don't get why I can't live with her.

  • The cute tabby kitten at the 1.30 mark is seen in the TV ads with actress Wendie Malick.

  • did that cops car say bonner county? lol

  • This dont look any worst then a puppy, except they dont make any money for the suffering..

  • Ok yall when I win the lottery I'm going to have this many cats swear

  • @WHITETRASHDOLL Okay, but promise you'll hire people to help you take care of them!

  • The orange and white cat hobbling along with a broken leg around 1:40 literally broke my heart. :(

No animal should have to live like that.

  • @onewomanandsomesongs thats what im saying.

  • @onewomanandsomesongs

Literally? Holy shit! We'd better get you to a hospital!

  • @onewomanandsomesongs Why dont u care about the people who suffer?

  • @onewomanandsomesongs Does that include people with crutches?

  • Misery likes company.

People in need for psychiatric help

  • That's just not right! I use to feel for some of these people and think "they're helping sick animals" but obviously this is neglect. Like the video mentions, "visit the shelter" I heard some people say they want to meet in a mutual place, now I see maybe why?!!

  • @catcher032062

These people usually have a disorder and are mentally ill. They need help. It's not cruelty it's just more than they can take care of and a problem.

  • how can people live this way? I have two dogs who are costing me a ton of money for vet bills and food. How in the world is anyone going to care for these poor creatures who were unfortunate enough to be born to this kind of life? Obviously folks like this are sick, but the poor cats are paying the price. I think there should be much stiffer penalties for this abuse sick or not. period. This is a horror show.

  • This is so sad! Why was no one watching this place

  • Hoarding is for poor people. The government & the rich: STOCKPILE.

  • Actually, that is a stereotype. On Dr.Phil there was a couple where the husband was a coporate lawyer and the wife was a former nurse and they were hoarders. Hoardering is a over compulsive disorder that could happen to either rich, wealthy or poor. I've met less fortunate people that are neat freaks.

  • I'm guessing the owners of the 'shelter' had good intentions at the start, but let it get out of hand.

If theres anything to be learned from this: when we choose to adopt a pet, lets be responsible caregivers.

  • My neighbors are like this. You can smell their house from two blocks away.

  • you should call the local authorities. What they are doing is against the law, and more importantly, they need help, possibly medication to help this hoarding behavior. Really sad.

  • At least the cats and dogs seem to be nice and not fearful. They have a chance at getting adopted.

  • I would hate cats but I also hate too see them suffering like that.

  • It is easy to say awful things about other people. Any one who suffers from physical or mental chronic conditions will be able to relate to this situation more so. If this people were truly hoarders than they them selves need professional help. But they did not do this out of malicious heart they probably thought they were helping, My heart goes out to both this poor animals and the this poor people. Cheers.

  • These poor babies deserved so much better. Now many of them have to be euthanized. They should euthanize those f*%#ing shelter owners along with the sick cats!

  • also along with all the breeders and idiot parents who buy their kid a pet and gets rid of it when the kid doesn't want it anymore and people who let their cats go out and breed

  • the animals need to go. But the people are ill and need help not hate. I do understand how you get upset seeing this though- I'm an animal lover to

  • Agreed. Help is what people like this need, they don't understand what they are doing.. but not in the same way that they are just ignoring it.. they legitimately don't understand they are hurting these poor animals.

I have 3 cats left and I think that is more than enough!

  • @memacnoca the people need imprisonment and a ban on owning animals. This is not about hoarding newspapers. It's animal torture.

  • why is this a court issue against the shelter owners? These people were ill and likely well intended. How about charging the deadbeat people who dump the animals there- endangering the health of these ill people as well as the cats

  • that is so ignorant. read what you said; "the health of the ill people."

  • The sad part is most of those animals are going too be put down I brought in some kittens last year I called a couple of weeks later to check and see if any were adopted they told me they were uthinized right away I told them i would take them back if no one adopted them but I guess they thought they would be better off dead than living on my farm

  • i don't like cats at all but this is was heartbreaking

  • sissy..

  • And yes, the mentally ill ARE slipping through the cracks: the new mental hospitals (since the country tossed them out of state hospitals onto the street and closed the mental hospitals) are the jails and nursing homes, where, in the latter case, they're mixed in with the demented, frail elderly, putting the elderly at risk of violent assault from aggressive, mentally ill people.

  • homeless people

  • These people don't need to be arrested; they need compassion and treatment with a psychologist for a year or more, as well as help from professional organizers, but unless they have the cash to pay for it themselves, often they will be left untreated.

  • Animal "hoarding" is indeed horrifying. It seems it's becoming more common...or, are more people being caught and arrested? Remember too, that the hoarder is not mentally okay. An offshoot of Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, hoarding is perhaps one of the more distructive symptoms of the illness. There may be a larger picture here that we are missing. Why so much hoarding? Are the mentally ill slipping through the cracks in various county programs?

  • anyone trying to stand up for people like this are dumb, i mean what would you like, to be stuffed up with a bunch of other people in one house with no food and the house stinks and is falling apart, or would you rather take your chances being adopted and if not at least its a quick death

  • that poor limping cat omg. i am glad they got those animals out of there

  • sometime their intentions are well but they lose control. it is better not to rescue so many animals if you can't handle them. it is better to rescue fewer to ensure all the well being of the animals. sometimes it is hard to accept the fact that you can't rescue all the animals. they will be killed because people don't spayed their animals. shame.

  • i don't think these people were cruel, i just think they could not cope. perhaps a bit of support might have helped. many shelters KILL healthy animals and that's why people steer clear of them, i know this for a fact cos i have taken in many animals over the years (at my own cost) cos people are scared that their pets will be killed. how many of these cats really ended up being euthanised? it's a disgrace!

  • At 1:04 .. I think that little kitten is dead in the background. :-(

  • so sad..

  • So they killed 353 of them nice cops

  • KITTIES!!!!!

  • mydeardiaries, i'm very sorry for your loss.

my cat was a stray kitten that was brought in by a hoarder and then rescued by shelter staff. he's my only cat and i think he prefers being my only buddy :)

  • my cat died on thursday and I criedddddddddddddddd. I have been depressed since then.

  • Oh hon, I am so sorry to see here that you lost one of the loves of your life.....my guy is 14 and will move on too - I can only imagine the pain that you have felt.

Pets are precious, I hope that you have found a new love, but once again.

  • 400 cats:O. OMFG!!!!

  • I mean, we have the crazy cat lady on the Simpsons to show us this is a bad idea right? Like Smokey the bear does for forest fires....

  • Unfotunatly, the abuse and neglect animals face must be unimanigable before it is brought to the publics attention. Puppymills and Factory Farms come to mind!!!!

  • The comments that the cats shown didn't look sick are rather silly given that this segment is from TV news. There are certain things news stations cannot air, especially depending the time of day. I'm sure the public, however interested, didn't want to see dead and dying cats all over their screen if their kids were home. Out of 400 cats, I'm sure there were many with incureable diseases, leaving it more humane to euthanize than let them suffer.

  • All the kitties made me sad to look at, but the cat with the broken legs pulling himself along was just heartbreaking. How can people treat animals like this?

  • Too sick to survive. Most of them would have been fine.

Why not work with the people to find an optimal solution.

I'm sure they wanted the best for the cats. They were just overwhelmed.

  • Yeah...isn't that crazy? 'Too sick to survive'!!!

  • FeliciaLeslie are you a vet

do you have the money to fix-up these cats health

PLEASE FIX YOUR PET (not petS)

PLEASE DONT HOARD (there is help)

  • Didn't you hear? A lot of of them were euthanized. The animals they showed did not look like they were sick enough to be euthanized. Loving homes? Ha! Also, they urge people to check out shelters before leaving their pets. I would imagine most of those animals were picked up off the streets. When are the big shelters going to learn that some people would rather turn their animals loose than take them to a place where they will simply be killed.

  • SICK PEOPLE

  • Um, HSUS is "trying to help them". . .that's kinda what this whole video is about.

as an aside to the people who say they love cats, most county shelters and hsus' have catterys where the cats live prior to being adopted, and you can volunteer to work in them a couple of hours a week--feeding, changing litter, and petting cats. It's a way to help if you don't have the money to donate.

  • That video kills me, mistreating animals is almost as bad as mistreating children, both are helpless and cannot do for themselves, a real shame.

  • Why not try and help them? Hsus has enough money to. Most of those animals looked pretty healthy.

  • Did i hear right? "Rarely get Jail time" omg speechless.

  • It's very sad that these defense animals were treated like that.

  • Those guys that live there are probabley crakheads! They need to go to Jail.

  • Hoarders are not crackheads. Do some research or understand a topic better before making these assumptions.

  • I dont understand how all shelters are like this.I was looking to adopt a dog from a rescue. They wanted $200.00 for the dogs.I decided I did not want one after all.

  • If you can't put down $200 for a pet, you have no business owning one. Pets costs upwards of $1000 yr, so this is a way that rescue groups use to weed out people who can't afford to take care of pets. Plus, they need to cover costs for food, rent, salary, etc.

  • you said it all.Thank you.

  • Those poor little kittys. They didn't deserve to be treated like that. I hope some of them could be saved.

  • Bless the animals. Poor ginger :(

  • i hate cats.

  • They hate you too.

  • So why did you watch this..go far away..and then farther!!!!

  • i hope they bite you.

  • id love to adopt one by mine is tertoial and is always the winner when she gets ito fights!!

  • GAS 'EM ALL, EVEN THE HOARDER!

  • I took in a total of 5 cats and only 1 dog for 15 and 20 yrs. But now just have 6 stray dogs. That's all I can handle. At least thy don't all sleep with me anymore-my asthma has gotten so much better...

  • It is sad,the people running these places have to be mentally ill and in some cases believe their place is "still safer then the streets"which sadly, homeless humans are told about unsanitary, dangerous shelters. But it is no excuse for such poor conditions, not enough food,no spaying/neutering ect.and should be charged with animal cruelty to the full extent of the law.Thank you for a very important animal issue that too many neighbors ignore as well.

  • The work's of the political coletive HSUS is very good!

    Congratulations!

  • Wait a minute..hold up here.

Isnt the HSUS the organization who sent hundreds of the Katrina pit bulls to Tammy Hansen (Every Dog Needs a Home) in Arkansas? Despite huge opposition from rescues around the country saying that the Hansens were nothing more than common animal hoarders and under investigation by the local authorities as such?
