It is probably best, when speaking a language from a country that you don't live in, to speak it with a slightly foreign accent so that they know you are not a local. If you speak too well then the locals may expect you to already know things that you probably don't know and then they might think that you are a little simple.
I'm 53, an American expat in South Korea, so I'm really at sea as to what might be available for social interaction. Koreans really aren't like Western folks about such things, and my non-Korean colleagues here are in their 20's and 30's. I suppose that's why I rely on the internet so much for socializing.
I teach with a program called Broadband for Seniors, a joint program between NEC and the Australian government, and that somehow involves U3A. I get the occasional newsletter from them. Sadly the community centre where I do it is very quiet.
Still, at least I'm able to help make computers a bit less scary and strange, and give advice about common scams to avoid. Such as that "tech support" phone scam, which I first heard of through one of your videos.
Oh, and for your question, I guess here in the states we have the Elks clubs, and the Eagles. Both are sort of social clubs that are composed mostly of retired folk. I don't know if they do much more than play handball and drink, but they throw a fine new years bash that has every grandparent out on the dance floor doing their thing.
Boy, is it ever good to see an update, Tenneral. I had begun to think you'd given up on YouTube for good. Glad to see you had an excellent summer holiday, and even better to hear about your enriching experiences with U3A. I know of no such thing here in the States, but with the first Baby Boomers hitting 65 now, we surely could use it.
Nice to see you back and hope you are going to post some videos about your holiday in Italy. I was on the Amalfi coast during May and hope to go back to Verona when they have that opera festival.
Reporting in from the Colonies - I can say we have U3A here in Australia (and in NZ).
I am not quite at retirement age yet (just turned 50) but I can imagine this is the kind of thing I would get involved in when I do. I intend to be a life long student. 8-)
In the USA we don't have U3A, but we have something called TV. It keeps our brains active learning important things, such as, what Kim Kardashian is doing this week, who Snooki is sleeping with, that kinda of stuff.
In Ireland we have falling down the stairs and/or having a heart attack or stroke, and then dying due to the well meaning incompetence of relatives. Apparently it's cheaper. Since the estate agents and banks robbed everyones pension that's what the future holds for hundreds of thousands of people.
There is nothing like that here where I am in America and that is the reason I want to come home to England. I don't know how the gentleman didn't recognize you as British since I have already said you look exactly like some of my family members. As you said you didn't speak Italian, as some of us do, when speaking a foreign language, just yell and talk slowly. We have senior centers but not spread equally around the country. There are some community colleges that teach certain things.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and your love of language. I'm currently undertaking to continue learning French, and i've been working on German as well. I'd like to look at some Korean and Chinese in the future, and perhaps i'll look at some Italian too, you make it sound fun. =)
Cool! My grandparents emigrated from Italy and neither I not my twin sister learned Italian in the home but she spent a bit of time and effort and learned Italian and went to Italy to meet some of our "long lost family" who treat her very well. While my twin is a bit of a pain I will say she has done a great job learning Italian. She seems to have a gift. I can't think of an analog to U3A here but maybe there is one I don't know about. Great video as always.
You make retirement look inviting. An all too popular retirement activity in North America is to spend way too much money on a huge RV, and then make everyone else's driving experience more interesting than is necessary.
Thank you for the post sir. Your posts are among my favourites on YouTube, and I find myself echoing the sentiments of every other commenter thus far.
As a direct response, as I live and work in France hopefully whenst I retire my brain will keep on being challenged as I'm originally from Birmingham (UK) - not exactly the most cultivated area of Britain ( no offence meant ). My partner whom is retired spends all of her time working for charity and various projects and stays in touch with her old work "mates." Good to see a rare video from Tenneral land.
Nice to see that you're back. : ) I found the video very intriguing and worthwhile. I honestly don't know what institutions we have for retired people to train their mind. I live in the Netherlands.

I'd like to watch a Tenneral video fully in Italian so that we could draw our own conclusions about the fluency and accent.
Please indulge us

I wish we had something like that here! Alas, we don’t. So I spend my days browsing the web and playing my piano. Not at the same time, of course.

We have hundreds of "Università della terza età" in Italy, this website gives a long list of them:

My parents are both sicilian, I lived 15 years in South africa and I still have not lost my English accent in over 30 years now that I live in Italy.
