  • did you do a video for catchum too? that is the other kaypro game I remember. Actually I don't remember anything about it except for the bad pun in the instructions that says to remember "there's more than one way to skin a cat, chum"

  • HOOKA

  • I totally remember this

  • Build in B.A.T.C.H.

    xD

    :D

    :)

  • This is awesome.

  • i wouldnt mind seeing some reviews on say an "oric atmos" or a "dragon 32/64" or "Amstrad cpc464" BBC B and Acorn electrons are fun if you want the definitive game of Elite, and if you can get a Sharp x68000 (basically a capcom arcade reference machine in pc format" and review that then im in Lazy heaven

  • when we got a modern x86 computer i got his old kaypro, this game rocks my life

  • I was 12 years old when my dad got a Kaypro10 for his business, and I junked out on this game time and time again.

I actually learned to use the debugger tool, DDT, to hack this game and enable my own cheat mode by adding walkways where the jumps were difficult and walls to keep the bad-guys from running into me. :)

  • Thank you sir, for taking me back to my childhood. You wouldn't happen to know about an old ASCII game named Labyrinth that came out at about the same time would you? I've been unable to find evidence that the game even exists so far.

  • @Bokai You're quite welcome, glad you enjoyed!

I haven't seen the game but I'll keep a look out for it on my ASCII and CP/M excursions.

  • I love it :)

  • awesome!!!!

  • Wow, great video! That computer looks like the most powerful computer ever designed. You could run a laundromat with that thing. But seriously, this is a cool video, I love seeing the ASCII-only graphics! Thanks for making this!

  • That was excellent . Not that many people go that far a back that often and you did it in a splendid way.

  • now thats what i call a computer!!! thnx for upload great review!!

  • Maybe you can contact the programmer to ask what "Hooka" means and the other weird sentences ? ;)

  • You can just see some business man, sitting in a hotel room playing this one night as he has nothing else to do before his morning meeting LOL

  • This game kicks ASCII!

  • @pheakindee May I ask what the specs are on your computer that you play modern games on?

  • Hooka!

  • zomg please review more recent modern games on your classic games show!

  • @mstrsmth Haha, I know, right?

  • they were smoking some weird crap when they made this. did they think you eat quiche was funny?

  • wow, very creative using text as graphics

  • Man this is not retrogaming this is archeogaming! that's not to say it's bad, actually i really like this stuff you show, kinda the frontiers of retrocomputing, where no man has gone before :-O

  • do more new games like the ones that are compatabale with modern computers

  • @roblox296 Unfortunately that's not really what this channel is for. It's my goal to review older games or games with direct ties to older games.

  • I used to play games in CP/M Basic on my Amstrad PCW 8256 - one cool game was 'Duckshot' where you fired a shot vertically at a moving target travelling accross the top of the screen.

  • Cool review phreak! Hooka!

  • Oh, I thought it would be a Lode Runner clone. XD

  • @Highretrogamelord89 Well, that could be forgiven, seeing as Lode Runner was at first very nearly a Donkey Kong clone!

  • new LGR coming this friday?

  • I made a game using the Extended ASCII graphics back in year 11 with Turbo Pascal. I actually found it again the other day and I was surprised at how complete it was. Would you be interested in checking it out?

  • Reminds me kind of a Timex Sinclair 1000 game, but at least the Timex had more games. Not like I would know, mine is broken, sadly.

  • You're the little guy at the bottom... I mean the lower case "p" lol. Man gotta love ASCII graphics. Actually looks pretty good considering you're just pointing the camera at the screen. Picks it up okay.

  • portable my ass... at least they're fun to screw around with.... ( i dont have one, but i like to mess with what i can get my hands on)

  • Yeah, this is why I got banned from that library that had these machines.

That beep sounds like what happens if you type ASCII 0007 into DOS, Hold ALT and press 007 on the numeric pad on a dos machine and you will know what I am on about.

  • When you said "The Lad", for some reason my mind started thinking about the rpg game "Arc the Lad"

  • Glad to see you got the Kaypro to work Phreak. Also thanks for posting the game link on your message board. I will definitely have a go at it tonight ^_^

  • Reminds me of Aldo's Adventure. In fact, it's made by the same team that made this game.

  • @thatsistheguy Yes, Aldo's Adventure is extremely similar! Even has many of the same level names.

  • Aahh good old PC games... I love these videos

  • isnt hooka a jewish word

  • Hooka i almost Pissed my self laughing at that reference (i assume you took a hit after every level ?)

  • do you ever do game consoles ? i had a callecovision when i was a youth, a vid about that would be cool !!

  • reminds me of the PET games that are out there.

  • Did you get any of those "Star Trek" simulators that were quite popular in the early computer days??? I used to LOVE those games and I would love to see it demoed!

  • @Ogma01 Any particular one you're thinking of? As you said, there are plenty of them. I have several for PC laying around, I'm sure. I'll have to take a look at them at some point

  • @phreakindee How about the 25th Anniversary Game? Not really a simulation, but I'd love a review of that.

  • Glad you got it to work. Nice job!

  • @senorverde09 Thanks! Both floppy drives are still rather iffy, giving read errors here and there but at least it's working nicely when the floppies read.

  • Kaypro? My watch has more memory than that thing! lol King of the Hill and Peggys Kaypro!

  • Marge has one too.

  • Hooka!!!!

I am oldschool but not sure I could go back to games like this. Still if I had nothing else.............

  • @MaximumRD Yeah, it's more of a "if you've got nothing else" and when you had a Kaypro, you really didn't. I guess it was nice for a break from Wordstar.
