the music was memerable, the words could be heard, and remembered, and sung along too, now, my body may be old, but my mind is still young, and when i sing the old songs on karaoke, i find the youngster do to. if only our lives were a loop, so that we could keep going back to that rock and roll era. bigken
I'd like to meet the people who decided NOT to play this music in America. I missed Billy Fury, Marty Wilde and the other great stars from other countries. I saw Tommy Steele & Cliff Richards in a couple of movies and heard the great Lonnie Donegan a couple of times, in the sixties. I'm so glad we have sites like this where we can see & hear great talents from everywhere.
@boothl232 Yeah strange...must've been some kind of protection rig of the U.S music market.Cliff Richard could easely match Elvis in the rock'n'roll stakes.Thankfully they couldn't keep that up with the advent of the "British Invasion",and reluctantly (6 months later) started playing Beatle records.
I am 68yrs old - this music brings back those glorious late 1950s days - the jukeboxes in the coffee bars playing al the latest records for a old sixpence lol.
Such happy carefree days everything was new - our own british singers as well as Elvis and other USA Rock n Rollers.
@tonyWen1 the things i'd give to be born during that time period... In usa of course. not my country. we had communism then. and people getting killed for speaking what was on their minds / having a "wrong" opinion.
@thcrazyazin totally. The 50's was the best time! From what my grandma told me. She told me so many stories and so many memories. I was born in the wrong time.
Hi Trackienben,.... thanks for your comments. After viewing this on Youtube, I purchased the CD. Now that I have listened to it a few times, I still think I like Marty's version just a tad better. Dion's version is more polished and smooth but I find the version by Marty to be a bit more fun. It's hard to say; perhaps, if I had known this version long ago, it would not have a the same effect on me. There is almost a Ricky Nelson sound to it and I am a big Ricky Nelson fan. take care, Mike
@bassaddict82 RHCP didn't change much to the song. So how do you like the version better? I appreciate both equally because they're practically the same.
@MrUnderdude ik, they are very similar, but i like john's harmonies better, anthony's singing is a little better in a way, and the guitar in this version is not to my liking. RHCP's version is better in my opinion.
This IS a very good version and was a super duper huge hit in the UK in 1959 - Oh how I remember that glorious summer, weather was ace! But I don't think it is better than the Dion version. Personally I think the Dion and the Belmonts version has the edge but not by much, unfortunately it was only a little hit in the UK.
Can't touch Dion IMO, but I have to agree with dowopper51...probably the second best contemporary cover (and perhaps the only listenable British version...sorry Dickie Valentine fans)...thanks for posting
Being from the States I never heard of this artist but he's very good. Beautiful voice and nice to see he's still alive and kicking. Many of the great artists of that era are gone but not forgotten.
@Tonithenightowl He is Kim Wilde's father. You may remember she had a number one in the USA. Can't remember the song but why not do a search. I will after this message. Cheers!
@bille1131 It was You Keep Me Hanging On Great rendition by this artist. I do remember her from my kids watching MTV in the 80's. She has a wonderful voice so the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree. Cheers Thanks for responding.
Isn't it strange how a pop idle can go from a hero to a zero in the time it takes to reply to a simple request for an autograph.
.
I spent loads as a kid following my hero around his tour, I asked him for his autograph at the stage door at the Queens Theatre in Rhyl, He more or less pushed me into his security guy and walked away..
He came back not so long ago with a gathering of geriatric reunionists! I didn't bother.
maybe I'll see him in the Sunhome, in niebouring bathchairs.
I think Marty Wilde was the most bland singer I have ever seen! His face is emotionless!!! With that said, I think his version of this sounds excellent!!
@CoolioRockstar No Coolio... This was the hit in 1959, it beat the Dion and Belmonts version because Wilde was a "local" UK singer. This version though pretty good is not a patch on the Dion and the Belmonts original!
Sure they were clones of Americans but very quickly British pop music developed it's own brand of R&R and within 5 years the British Invasion led by the Beatles swept the US and the World and has never looked back. Before these pioneers and the skiffle groups there wasn't even a record industry in the UK. outside of classical.
What a bullshit. Cliff Richard and The Shadows were the first superstars from the UK. In the period before the British Invasion they were huge in world except the US. In that 5 year period they also wrote most of their own songs and sold millions, millions of records. They paved the way for the British music industry. Their big influence may not be underestimated.
Tyzos Cliff & the Drifters had the 1st UK R&R hit with "Move It" tying with Tommy Steele & "Caveman Rock". Hank Marvin inspired a generation of youth to play a guitar incl Paul Mc. I saw Cliff and the Drifters in York, John Barry Seven opened - the son of the theatre owner!.
At 1st UK rockers mimicked the US, it was all they had to go but soon developed their own style. Oh Boy had a major influence on British R&R Also Radio Luxonburg and later R Caroline
How can you people respect this entirely derivative music? Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, et al were manufactured clones of their American betters. So was Cliff. . . and you know it's true. . .

He combined gospel and country and gave birth to the Sun Sound. Conway Twitty, Ricky Nelson, early Lennon, Ralph Doner, Marty Wilde, etc., etc., were just immitations.
I agree. And to everyone: No, these clowns didn't write there own music and neither did Elvis, HOWEVER the difference is that 99% of the time the Americans were the original singer and took that song from nothing and MADE it into a popular, known song. The brits sat at home, watched what turned into a top 10 hit, THEN went out and sang that exact song with almost the exact same style. That's why they were DOUBLE the COPY and CLONING! They were clones of the clones!
The only thing thats true here is you baby talk crap spoken with a watermelon brain . These 60 s boys were hot cool and brill ,So rabit head whatever your stupid name is go back to your idiotic mates and play WHO IS THE IDIOT its a good game ,I bet you win every time .

Rabidburt 2 years ago
Fury wrote most of his own music.
And Elvis wasn't a derivative of any one who preceded him?
Come on - everyone has someone who influenced their musical style, even Elvis and the Beatles.
The problem was the Brits (with few minor) exceptions couldn't get played on American Radio.
The agents, promoters and handlers modeled
their performers on what was selling at the time.
That does NOT diminish their talent, if it did the Beatles would be considered mockers of Holly and Presley.
boothl232 2 years ago 3

Saw Marty do this last Week in Hornchurch. The song is a little inappropriate now that he is Seventy!
