Shadow Gallery fans don't hate Dream Theater. I don't! Shadow gallery and Dream Theater have a good relationship it seems together. Members of both bands have worked together a LOT.

Yeah, Mike Baker was in "The Human Equation" with James LaBrie. Shadow Gallery and DT are IMO diverse enough from eachother. I listen to both. My favourite thing about Shadow Gallery is their amazing use of an ordinary piano!

This first reminded me of George Lynch's Mr. Scary...which was one of my favorites. This kills that song tho. AWESOME! Can't wait for the new album!

New Shadow Gallery album due out in November of this year. The disc is in post production. According to informed sources, the band has a new lead singer/guitarist

whose vocals are featured on many of the tracks. More information coming soon.

It is unfortunately a truism that Dream Theater will always be discussed comparatively by children in Prog forums and such. It amazes me because Dream Theater are incredibly derivative and certainly not irreducibly complex like some DTphiles will profess. Just enjoy the music and forget out the bureaucrats who insist that music should be labelled, which is ultimately what causes these rifts.

Dream Theater is pretty complex... I dunno what "irreducibly" means (can't be more complex?) they aren't the MOST complex band... but The Dance of Eternity has 104 time signature changes in it's 6 and a bit minutes, and used complex tuplets and complex riffs.

Simply brilliant! Guys, justsit and enjoy the good music which, thank God, still exists. Whether you name it Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Symphony X and so on and so on,as long as it carries so much beauty and perfection, it doesn't matter which band is "greater". There's just not better and best. We should be happy that there are bands who keep prog alive and kicking. And this is one of these bands.

It's a Shadow Gallery and doesn't even play the same style... Same happens with Symphony X and Seventh Wonder, all preogressive and I don't really think they sound alike...

at last someone who thinks like me. dream theater are the most overated band in the universe. there is a boatloads of far more interesting bands out there. the world of progressive metal is far more vast than many thinks it is really is. shadow gallery is one such band. they make some of the sickest instrumentals.

you can't just erase all critics by saying that there are bands worse bands than dream theater (not sayin dream theater is bad) so in that case no metal band should be criticized ever, because rap and pop exist.

I don't get it why awesome bands like Shadow Gallery, Magellan, Enchant or Power of Omens never really took off in the prog metal community - instead they are constantly ridiculed and shrugged off by gimped kids who think Dream Theater are a godsend.

Shadow Gallery is older than Dream Theater, and Gary Wehrkamp is freaking ace (he plays both the lead guitars and the keyboards).

I think the only reason why Shadow Gallery didn't get much attention in the prog community, is because they've never promoted themselves that much. They've got a website, and they release CDs once in a while. They never promote their stuff outside their website though, and they NEVER played live shows. I think it's a shame, because they outclass SO many others.

They're not really older, 2 of the members were in a band in the 80s called Sorcerer but they didn't join up with the other members, change the name to Shadow Gallery and have even demo material out until 1990.

Majesty was going for about as long, but they had become Dream Theater and had a debut album out by 1989.

Just thought i'd clear that up, but who really cares how old a band is?

Shadow Gallery is a fantastic band...I got the "Tyranny" album to start with and gradually got the rest. I Don't think passages like these should be compared to DT. In this song particular there is Far Far more intensity then most DT songs and it serves it's purpose compellingly. My opinion. Also as word of mention Symphony X classifies as Prog Metal and they sound nothing like Dream Theater...I'm not a big fan of dream theater unfortunetly but I love "The Great Debate" and "Fatal Tradgety"

If you don't think Symphony X sounds like Dream Theater, you haven't heard their earlier releases...John Petrucci said somewhere that "In the beginning, they were just trying to sound like us..."

@knumorvid Completely CORRECT. Symphony X is a totally different beast. A lot more aggression and pure form. They may not be complex in most songs but, that is because they don't want to be. Church of The Machine is so far my Fave and a very slick and well orchestrated piece of music. I just can't compare Symphony X to Dream Theater.

They will have to be around for a long time before they have the same kind of credibility that DT has earned over the years, however they DO have the potential to be really great.

Shadow Gallery were actually formed a few years before Dream Theater, but has never gathered much attention, which is a shame. They have never played a live show, either, which is a shame. These guys are far underrated, unfortunately.. Dream Theater are the best musicians in the world, though (in my opinion, of course!). Oh, and Cliffhanger 1 is way better than part 2, in my opinion :) Cheers.

I liked Dream theather when they were Majesty and the First 3 albums when they were Dream Theather. but later stuff sucks and james labrie sounds more and more like ass as the albums go on.I think Shadow Gallery is more Creative writers then Dream theather.

Thats probably because Dream Theater Have such an unique Sound and Style, that that kind of music is known as Progressive Metal, and any band that wants to be called a Progressive Metal Band will often approach to a DT-Like Style.

There's no real similarities. Using the same scale in a solo doesn't mean they are unique to DT. Also some modes are wide used so its common to be repeated.

They don`t sound like DT at all they sound SG and they are better song writers without DT's overdoing.They also have a better singer,no need to reach the highest note...and they instrumental parts don`t sound like various pasted sections which often leads to brutal change and lack of smoothness...
