hey man good stuff..right, ill start with the software...have you thought about going bigger because garage band is compact and only so much you can do with it...2, there is too much distance between the toms and the over heads..either lower the over heads closer to the drums or by individual mics for the drums...with the money you are spending with the sound cards/interfaces i think it would be more advisable just to get a usb mixing desk...good luck in the future..inbox me if you need anything
@ohyourface22 ....I was responding to other comments.... aidanyoubeterreply : "dude, those drums sounds pro. those mics dont seem bad at all!" Nice Sound. I have both the MXL 990 and the MXL 991 and if you are looking to expand your set up the mxl 991 works great for overheads or hi hat mics. It is a little more clear and focused than the 990 but a has a little less bass and mid response.
hello you are an inspiration... so correct me if i'm wrong but you use the presonus for the two overheads?
and for the two black art tube preamps would you recommend getting a few if I just wanted to mic the toms, snare, and bass? Or do you use the overheads for that?
How are the pre-amps connected to your computer? Via USB? Because I really need a setup like this. Right now I am using a desktop mic and a SHURE SM-57.
i have an mbox 2, can you record with 4 mics using the art preamps? because i want to record drums but 2 mics doesnt really cut it. Can i go into pro tools with an mbox and the art preamps and get to use 4 mics? and how?
This is Gold, those Samson mics are $15 w/ free shipping on eBay! Comes with a cable as well. Not a bad alternative when you can't put a SM57 on everything.
It doesn't sound good, it sounds less than average, who cares if it was cheap. Drums are not something that can be average and covered in the mix. Cheap stuff is a waste of money in the long run, especially cheap mics.
For overheads, do you prefer the 990s to pencil mics such as the 991s? Ive been using two 991s and a 990 for a room mic, wondering if i should get another 990 and use them as over heads?
The snare sounds fine for what it is. You WANT some overtones or else it sounds like a box w/wires on it. I guarantee if you heard those drums in a mix w/other instruments they'd be just fine w/a little more tweaking.
And regarding the comment about not getting enough toms w/this set up: you can get a sufficient amount of toms for most situations with some EQ and compression to even it out.
man honestly im just getting into this so i might be wrong, but your kick sounds weak, and the snare and hat feel like theyre a million miles away. not trying to be a troll, but Ive been hearing this alot, so im wondering whether thats supposed to happen or not. i always thought engineers try to get their drums to sound like real life but I keep hearing professionals make their kit sound edited.
Skills to your ear and your post processing skills! To me the main difference is that cheaps mics generally work for a smaller range of instruments than expensive mics. A really nice clean and balanced sound you got there. Good job!
this sounds great. i allways use too many mics for all my toms, everything bleeds together and sounds like crap. ill sell my tom mics and get some decent overheads i guess. cheers man. keep drumming too, your off to a good start
Not bad man I dig it. I also saw a MXL 990 "stereo" mic on their website. Not sure of the cost though. But I got the 990/991 combo and the ART preamp, not bad stuff for some Rock n Roll...
nice job man when i first looked at the mics you were using i thought there was no way but that sounded pretty good! might have to try a setup like this out!:D
hi, i have dru microphones for recording and the i dont have enough midi cable slots on my mixer to fit is ther some type of thing i can buy where all the midi cables go into to one interface then 1 midi cable comes out of it then that goes into the mixer?
those over heads are really nice and ur right those samsons do have really bad sensitivity cuzz it sounds like everythings coming from the overheads but it sounds pretty good
Dude I think it sounds great.

I bet that would sound 1,000x better with an xy technique minus the cheap snare mic, works for my pair of sm58>xenyx 1002>old desktop pc

It definitely does NOT sound pro. But the toms don't sound like they were close miked either. I heard lots of room sound.

its really the pre amps that help. thankfully my mixer has built pre amps which are AMAZING quality!!! and how you eq them really make the difference

sounds sweet, i'd go for a little less trebble on the snare and if those dynamics are so cheap get another 2 for your toms and your set!
