First month into my veganism I started getting light headed and weird. I was sure it wasnt my diet, so I consulted a veg friend, who was vegan practically her whole life and she gave me the best advice: eat. Eat like an herbivore, all the time. 6 small meals a day, because your stomach is always digesting such fiber and nutrient dense foods, and ever since I have been in GREAT health and felt so much better. Carnivores rarely eat, herbivores always eat.
I like it, I'm a ethical vegan, let's say for 5 months, most of vegans I've read say... "oh I lost so much weight..." and it's like... my weight is absolutelly the same from when I wasn't vegan, I always say... being vegan is not starving, it's not a punishment to yourself... but he health side of veganism is something many don't read, don't search, and then the whole group is criticized as lunatics, nice to meeto you!
Anyone would be hungry if they ate nothing but grapes and carrots all day and then walked 14 miles. This is what the person I am talking about here was doing.
how can i get my mom to get more healthy foods in LOL. cos u open ze fridge and there's yogurts and eggs and milk.. and CHEESE.. and then u open the cupboards and you have heinz tomato soup and wotsists! AHHHHHHH, i hate this stuff.. its just all my family and siblings like that stuff. my mom does get healthy stuff in the odd day but she manages money carefully so im just focked.
Maybe you could write her a list of the things you want and do some research so you know how much they will cost. Things like beans or lentils and vegetables and rice are very cheap so they shouldn't be beyond her budget, and you can make a wide range of dishes with just some veggies, legumes and rice, depending upon the spices and other ingredients you use.
i guess i sound like a hippy or something now ! Oh well, i know the worlds not going to be perfect, but i'm happy i'm standing up for what i believe. And i'm so glad i'm not supporting what goes on. I really do feel strongly about this now.
My best vegan outreach as it were has come from working with the public and receiving compliments on my skin, hair and nails :) and getting asked how I achieve it; Good Vegan Food of course!
I went veggie about age 6 and began to transition to veganism about age 8, Im a bit of a junk food vegan and dont really plan at all but Im 18 now and havent needed to go to the doctors from about 6 years old onwards. My advice to people would just be eat well, know a little bit of facts and dont worry.
I agree with the point about a persons social life, however I fail to see the comparison between a game I play a few hours a day and a drug that makes people whore them selves and rots holes in their brains. ;)
Wait to be vegan when your living on your own. Im 14 and live with my stupid parents telling me what to do. they dont want to spend 5 bucks on vegan ice cream.....I am a pescatarian, but when i live on my own ill be vegan...to be a vegan you need the time and the money. which i dont have...
Yeah, unfortunately most of the time you need to not be 14 to do veganism properly. Most parents don't understand and that would make it VERY difficult :-(
Good on you for making that commitment for yourself, maybe when you're a little older and have a part time job you can buy yourself the few extras you need to be vegan in your parents house :-)
When I was 18 I was vegan 4 a while, and very fit. One of my favorite protein sorces was "shake" i made with a few heaped tablespoons of Natures Way soy protien or straight soy flour with a heaped tablespoon of brewers yeast, with water. Yum! Mind you, it seemed to cause anyone else who took it to utter copious profanities and even gave severe headaches. But I did find that it helped, and along with nuts and seeds as snacks my main meals could quite happily be without something rich in protien.
I dunno man, I don't hold it against anyone for taking them but I would avoid taking them myself as much as is possible. Keith Mann who's this full on ALF activist says he would take meds if he needed to and makes a really good point, almost everything has been tested on animals at some time or another: water, fruits and vegetables, food colourings etc etc. If you avoided everything tested you would not be able to do anything, and a healthy activist is more valuable to animals then a sick one.
About the "medicine." This will be a bit long. You see, since there's "natural medicine" or herbal stuff; it's something that's being rather duked out, against with the pharma industry around here. (I'm in Canada, so it's a Nationwide issue I notice).
Just to put it in general, there are alternate ways of curing ailments, aside from herbal medicine, but you might need to sneak past the status quo by a certain bit; and ignoring the slanders. =p
lots of sense being talked! i work in construction, and people are always surprised if they find out i'm vegan. it feels good to maybe change people's pre conceptions that vegans are frail pale people. just a wee bit of planning makes it real easy. i often kind of forget that i even am vegan!
Awesome! Way to go with breaking that stereotype :-D
Yeah, I agree, if you get the planning done in the beginning it becomes a habit within around 30-45 days. You screw up occasionally (e.g. buying something and then realising its not vegan) but with time that becomes less and less. I don't think about it much anymore and haven't for months now (I've been vegan for 1 year and almost 1 month), I just do it, and I love my life :-)
It seems so difficult when you're in the moment, but a freaking granola bar or 1 piece of bread with peanut butter slathered on it could've avoided the whole damn thing, you know?
But, as my grandfather always said... you're right... *sing-song-voice* "If its worth doing, its worth doing well!"
Very good. Very good suggestions! :)
BTW Have I ever told you that you turned me on to balsamic salad dressing? I hadn't tried it till you mentioned it in a video.
Melanie you are a naughty vegan (takes you over my knee and smacks you LOL) I knew you were doing this. You have to be honest with yourself, and I don't think you have been. Vegan means no animal products (smack!)
Ahem...sorry about that :-p
A good vegan is always prepared. In the US they have these things called Lara bars that vegans are always carrying around with them in case of emergency. We have Leda bars. And what ever happened to nuts, they're vegan and very nutritious :-)
Seriously? Get the fuck out of my head! No, really, this vid is spooky-relevant for me...
LOL I have been a bit of a lazy vegan lately. I tend to slip up when life gets hectic... I might find myself, say, at a gas station, looking at nutrition bars because I haven't eaten in too many hours & suddenly one piddly little animal-ingredient-extract doesn't seem so grievous (which is exactly what they WANT me to think)... And that only makes it easier the next time.
There are a few, mostly people who don't work out a diet and either get lazy or start feeling like shit. It's funny, I am sometimes contacted by people who claim to be ex-vegans or know ex-vegans and tell me how unhealthy veganism is and that the vegan in question got sick and had to quit. Usually they cannot name what the sickness was, e.g. if it was vitamin deficiency which vitamins etc. I know of only two people who could tell me and both of them freely admit they were eating like shit.
I had one guy send me a really long message about how terrible veganism was and how it was the same as macrobiotics (it certainly is NOT, macrobiotics is based on Chinese medicine and does not neccessarily preclude animal products). He said he was vegan for many years and got sick. The only real symptom he could give me was that he got really thin. Hmmm what could cause that? Well if you intake less calories then you burn you loose weight, pretty simple really!
It's funny that people think someone getting sick when they are vegan and eating like crap is an indictment against veganism. If people getting sick following a diet was cause to reject this diet as impossible then I would say the standard omnivorous diet wins hands down in terms of how sick it makes people. But of course the people who oppose veganism can't see it that way.
love the video, it's very informative. I've recently switched to a raw vegan diet, and I have to say, I've never felt better :) I used to be a chef, so switching my diet was easy.
oooh, world of warcraft, stealing millions of boyfriends away from their girlfriends, hah
i worry about vegans who are having trouble getting the foods they need, too. in part for greedy reasons, because i don't want them creating a bad example of veganism. i do my best to obey the "vegan food pyramid," and i get a lot of compliments from people about how healthy i eat, whether or not they know i'm vegan. it sets a good example! haha
I can understand people who don't get being a vegan and thus are not vegan. But nothing makes me sadder than when someone who is a vegan for ethical reasons, gives up being a vegan. Honestly, I just don't get that.
Anyone who has a strenuous exercise program and thinks veganism is not possible just has to look up Mac Danzig's diet - he's a vegan UFC fighter, if that's any indication that anyone can be vegan.
Oh yeah, there are LOTS of vegan athletes. You just have to make sure you are eating nutritious food that contains enough calories to keep you going. It's not rocket science but I think athletes have to put a little more thought into their diets then everyone else, whether they are omnivore, lacto-ovo vegetarian or vegan.
First month into my veganism I started getting light headed and weird.
