Is it wrong of me to get all girlish and excited as he wraps himself on that man/horse? Becuase I was completely loving it and about had myself a noselbleed. That man/horse had a great body!
I will be reading it for my TAR 100 class. Actually I've already started reading it. Its freaking intense. Especially since its based on true events. Scary stuff....
this was the most amazing play to read, let alone see. It's just right, so insighful yet so consise. Absolutely haunting, and a refreshing take on madness, that isn't just condemnment!
I haven't read the play, or the book for that matter. I'll be honest, I first became interested in this play when I found a story saying that Daniel Radcliffe was going to be nude. But after reading a synopsis of the original story, I really want to find a copy to read.
@Moritz015 Basically a disturbed boy sees Horses as manifestations of God! He has sex with a girl in a stable while horses look on, is overcome with an Eden-like guilt and blinds them that they no longer see his shame....It's a fun night out!
@Moritz015 A phsyciatrist, Dysart - who is assigned to rip apart a teen, Alan - to find out why Alan had shoved a sharp horse-shoe pick onto six horses' eyes, making them blind.
daniel radcliffe clearly has great taste. this is one of the most challenging parts out there for a guy his age and he owned it both in the West End and Broadway! And no, Alan doesn't have sex with the horses. As Dan put it in an interview, " he does ride them naked and get off on it", as he is a "very disturbed" young man. Which is why most of the play is him speaking with a shrink.
That would of been simply amazing. I've read some of what the play is about and I think it would of been amazing. Daniel is a great actor and I think it would of been nice to see him perform in this play. *sigh*
aside from wikipedia, i'll give some of you guys a run down. equus is about a psychiatrist (dysart) and a 17 y.o boy (alan strang, D.R). alan is sent to him for blinding six horse with a metal spike. a lot of the play is flash back through alan's past and thier conversations as dysart tries to uncover the reason alan commited that crime. we find out that alan has created a religion based on horse, namely the horse god 'equus'.
do you have the rest of the play or know if this one is on DVD cause I dont want to see an old version of it but it looks like an interesting play and I want to see it
@Deppdevotions Equus was actually shown on broadway for a limited engagement. the revival started on the west end and finished on broadway. truly a wonderfully provocative performance. I sat 2nd row orchestra center.
It would be amazing to see this play.<3 I'm actually reading it now for Intro to theatre, and I love it.<3 I'm so tired of people who hear what its about and either have this reaction: "lol horsesex." or this one: "OMG, Daniel Radcliffe naked.<3" and who don't give a damn that this play is actually really deep and has a lot of meaning.
i saw it twice; it was amazing. it really has nothing to do with having sex with horses. "equus" is his god; all his life his mother preached about religion, whereas his father is ((i guess?)) atheist, so, in his confusion for worship, he turns to the horse. the reason hes naked is because hes having sex in the barn where he works, aka the "temple", and feels that hes disrespecting his god. its like a catholic having sex in church.
Well, he is, to an extent, sexually attracted to horses. His religious worship and sexual fascination are kind of the same thing in Equus. When Jill falls in love with him, he doesn't quite know how to recipricate.
@loverofwolves64 Ohw! Is the script available in print anywhere? :) I'm inrtigued by what it's about, but all the information findable pretty much yields the same result as aforementioned quotations. -_-
lol, i heard his voice & tone, & kept thinking of a Harry Potter, combined with Charlie Gorden type of charector! & LOL "carving up children" & was the "old" guy harry's uncle in "harry Potter"? & this play looks interesting!! Will there be a sensored version!? im not too comfortable seeing "Harry Potter" naked....but i LOVED the "Harry Potter has a hairy potter" Joke!!
Wow! I remember seeing this brillant play in London years ago. I think it is one of the most interesting and captivating stories that I have seen! Daniel was so good in it. Pity I an't go and see it again...
@BurningDogFace absolutly ! i read the play. my god it was just pheonominal truley a masterpiece. having said that its not the sort of genre that everyone is inclined to enjoy but for those who do it really is AMAZING i dont honestly think the actors did the writing justice though unfortunatly
@BurningDogFace absolutly ! i read the play. my god it was just pheonominal truley a masterpiece. having said that its not the sort of genre that everyone is inclined to enjoy but for those who do it really is AMAZING i dont honestly think the actors did the writing justice though unfortunatly
Not particularly, at least not when I read it through. Facing the issues it presents head-on can be unsettling, but the play encourages you to identify with both the psychiatrist and the boy, so the three of you will share confusion, frustration, and joy, so it's somewhat comfortable that way.
Equus is such an amazing play; i've always wanted to see it, no matter who's playing the role of Alan. But Daniel is such an amazing actor, in my opinion, and he only makes me want to see it even more
My gosh, I love this play, I read it before I knew Daniel Radcliffe was associated with it. I wish he wasn't because this play is soo much more than nudity.
You should read the play, it's really short by Peter Shaffer.
My take on the play: It's based on Peter Shaffer's interpretation and imaginative events that led a boy to blind 6 horses. That is the only true event, the blinding. The rest is all made up by the author. Alan Strang, the boy (played here by Daniel Radcliffe) goes into treatment of Harry Dysart. The psychiatrist induces hypnosis and brings about these scenes.
I think...And this is my opinion, that it has to do with religion...Alan's father doesn't like religion in general, and when Alan hung a picture of Jesus in his room and really revered it, his father replaced it witha picture of a horse...And those actions carried over...He began to worship the horse. When he fell in love with a girl and proceeded to have sex his god and the girl were in conflict...He blinded the horse so that they wouldn't see him anymore...
yeah sorry, I forget the word play, thats why I asked...I knew it was a play and please don't tell me:use the dictionary jjjajajaja...may I know about what talk the play? what was the plot?
Hey man, chill. I love the play, too, but you have to wonder. Everything needs humor; nothing wrong with that. But I mean, really, what if? Does he just... keep going?
no matter what you have to keep going, unless someone gets really hurt or something.
but I actually just saw a interview from a long time ago and he mentioned someone asking that and just joking he said he doesn't worry about it becuase that would be great.
close but no its about a 17 year old kid who has a more sexual fascination with horses but blinds 6 and that guy was his psychiatrist who is trying to figure out and treat this kids problum
He also worships horses as a God-like figure. His Mother read the Bible to him at an early age, and he had a grotesque picture of Christ in agony at the foot of his bed. His Father, who is Atheist, replaced the picture (after a row with his wife about religion) with a photo of a horse.
Alan started worshipping the photo of the horse instead, and so began his twisted vision of horses as the god Equus, along with a sexual fascination about them
Though I must say that he never actually engages in intercourse with a horse. The most he does is ejaculate whilst riding naked. Alan says that he enjoys "the feel of the horse between your legs, all that power going anywhere you wanted, the sweat, and oh the smell" (fyi, the quote might not be 100% accurate)
I saw Equus. You REALLY should read the play, Ninja and Helen. It's amazing. Had it been one or two of the three (Radcliffe, Griffiths, Equus) I would not have taken the trip.
The play is about this boy who gets horses and God and sex all mixed up in his head. We'll that's not a good overview, but it is HAUNTING. I cried. I want to know about the music, too.
When Daniel first walks on stage you think of Harry Potter, but after that you forget. He did an amazing job.
im perfoming this, and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas of a piece of music i cud use, something disturbing........ particularly for the scene where the horses are blinded
If you read the play, Peter Shaffer (the playwright) comments at the beginning of the play.
Peter Shaffer once heard from a friend (who indeed had heard it from another friend) that a young man blinded 6 (not 26, lol) horses.
Sadly, Shaffer's friend died before he could question him any further. The storyline of the play has spawned from that simple statement "a young man blinded six horses in a stable".
i cant even find anything on the internet about that story. it seems to be not documented or anything...i wanted to do some background checking and i cant find anything.
Well the author just heard from a friend that some guy went to jail for blinding a bunch of horses. That's all he knew, and it might not even be true. This is just a fictional explanation of why someone might have done that.
Is it wrong of me to get all girlish and excited as he wraps himself on that man/horse? Becuase I was completely loving it and about had myself a noselbleed. That man/horse had a great body!

Check out the American McGee's Alice soundtrack. You might find something there. What part are you playing, if you don't mind me asking?

If you read the play, Peter Shaffer (the playwright) comments at the beginning of the play.
Peter Shaffer once heard from a friend (who indeed had heard it from another friend) that a young man blinded 6 (not 26, lol) horses.
Sadly, Shaffer's friend died before he could question him any further. The storyline of the play has spawned from that simple statement "a young man blinded six horses in a stable".

i cant even find anything on the internet about that story. it seems to be not documented or anything...i wanted to do some background checking and i cant find anything.

If you take it as realism it would seem really over dramatic but there is a lot of symbolism to be found.
RageAndLove1 2 years ago
Yes, there is a lot of symbolism, but the story is real. In real life, if I'm not mistaken, the guy blinded 26 horses.
yaminesnape 2 years ago
Well the author just heard from a friend that some guy went to jail for blinding a bunch of horses. That's all he knew, and it might not even be true. This is just a fictional explanation of why someone might have done that.
