  • I know that Moon Mullins used to play this song on his radio show almost 30 years ago. I think he was broadcasting out of Middletown Ohio " Work hard and same your money boys".

  • i use to goto all the festivals in pinetop ky and all over with my dad dave was always there. You can take the girl out of the hillsbut never the hills out of the girl. If u like this one listen 99 years. Just hearing thongs brings back memories

  • Yes. Jim Wilson actually wrote the song!! I came across a cassette tape of his one time and this song was on it. I learned it and later went to a bluegrass jam (about 10 years ago) at the Bluegrass Barn and Jim was there! I played and sang this song on stage and afterwards he said..."Where'd u learn that song boy?" and I said, from you Sir:) He said the song had never been recorded that he knew of and I told him of the "tape". He just grinned and said "Keep up the playin' and singin' son"

  • Get well soon Dave

  • great song, i listen to dave evans all the time

  • It's based on a true story. A young man knew of several young children who were often left alone while their parents went to drink at a local bar. He stole a loaf of bread to help feed the children. Later on, one of the children put too large a lump of coal on the fire. Their house caught fire. The parents were found at the local bar drinking. Very sad.

  • i heard this song seems like around 1982 or 1983 i was up in hickory n.c. and i just now heard it for the first time in that many years great song

  • I met Dave one night in an old bar down off of parsons ave. in columbus ,oh . he was sober as judge and visiting a guy who used to play in his band . I love listening to Dave , very distinctive , all his own . I cant think of Randy's last name right now ,but he used to play mandolin for dave ,the band he sang with was Dakota.

  • @hayhaysdad1 Randy's last name is Thomas. he is now with Summer town rd

  • Heard this song a thousand times, both on radio and as performed by my cousins A.B. Holliday and Ronnie Barger, together and seperately.

Also, there was a song written and recorded by a gentleman from Knott County, Kentucky called "I Had to Wear My Sisters Shoes" In this song, the young man, stole a pair of shoes, and he walked out the courtroom, with those "new shoes that I had stole"

  • My Dad,Landon Messer, along with Dave Evans wrote this song when I was very young.Need any more info?holla...Thanks

  • @eddielehman1 I liked Landon,s version better, lot more feeling than Dave just my opinion!!!

  • @eddielehman1 I like Landon,s version a lot better, and Lowell Varney,s Banjer picking also!!!!!

  • My Dad,Landon Messer along with Dave Evans wroye this song when I was a youn boy.Need any more info,holla..Thanks

  • @eddielehman1 my Dad played with you dad for Dave

  • I just shake my head.

How is someone so good as to be beyond adjectives not a national frikkin' treasure?

  • Yep, what do you want to know

  • heard this song alot, back home in ky.

  • Seen him at festivals at the greenwich coonhunters club for 30 some odd years, he puts on one heck of a show to boot! When it comes to bluegrass this is as good as it gets.

  • My friends are Landon's cousins..they gave me music he did before he passed it is some of the best music i have ..at this moment dave is in my cd player..he has a voice like no other he will bring you to tears..they did see him in ohio in the past year and they said he was amazing I have seen him live once.

  • Dave Evans. A great great bluegrass soul singer. Should be one of the premier acts today and don't know why he is not. At bean blossom 2 years ago heard him sing for 2 hours on a bench after all were done. One of the best things I have heard in my lifetime. There is none better and no one sings from the heart more. Allison Krause says he is her favorite. Listen to his "Classic Bluegrass" album. If it doesn't tug your heart and bring you to your kness go buy a rap album.

  • @Bascomblodge

I agree wholeheartedly! I live two counties away, and his stint in prison must have scared off some record producers. My cousin Don Rigsby (holds his own on youtube) has produced for him since he was released, and I hope Dave goes back to the mainstream. His style is dying out....!

  • Dave wrote this song for his Mother just like Highway 52 what else do you want to know? He sold a song he wrote to a woman singer, around the same time and will not reveal whom it was sold to.

  • Jeanmarie....send me a PM and I'll send them to you... :)

  • love his music

  • If anyone can help I need the One Loaf of Bread lyrics by Dave Evans. My brother is a banjo player and needs the words.

    Thanks

  • dave evans is one great bluegrass singer! you can check out more on dave @ dave evans/myspace music

  • Now that's die hard in your face bluegrass! I LOVE IT!

  • Saw Dave do this number at the Cumberland Highlanders first Bill Monroe/Rosine festival. I loved it instantly. No one can sing it like Dave. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a tear fall from his eye while singing this one.

  • love dave evans listened to him for 20 years

im from kentucky we got all the good bluegrass singers ha!

  • yeah you might have all the good famous ones but come back here in the hills in west virginia and listen to theys boys pick them string hahaha

  • Mr Monroe may be the father, and Mr Stanley the Dr. But Dave Evans is Best.. I've been a big fan of Dave Evans for over 30 yrs, such a brilliant banjo player and song writer. this song was based on a true story from southern Ohio. If you have never seen or heard Daves Evans live,,,you must treat yourself . He is the truesit form there is today, None can carry his banjo case.

  • great song sung by one of the best bluegrass vocalist that i know of

  • ONE OF HIS BEST!!!!

  • Who could ever top Dave Evan's singing on this song?Songs from the heart are hard to find these

    days!

  • thanks jeff this video deserves more than 10 stars .

  • This is such an awesome song. I heard it a few years ago and became obsessed with finding it. I found it and had it for a few years. Dave Evans' singing is awesome, what a voice!

  • I know this song very well, its sung by one of the great masters of bluegrass.

  • Dave Evans is singing that for sure. He puts his soul in the song

  • there was a great singer/songwriter from Crum,WV. his name was Landon Messer. He and Dave worked some together. He wrote the first verses but was unable to finish. Evans finished the song. Mr. Messer may be singing the high part here, not sure? If you ever have a chance buy anything recorded by Landon Messer and Lowell Varney together. IMO some of the best bluegrass ever.

  • Landon Messer sang Baritone and Dave sings Tenor.

  • Thats right twebb1958! Landon Messer is one of my favorite Bluegrass singers of all time. I love the album of him and Lowell "Going to a City" from 1983 on Old Homestead Records. Some of the best music ever in my opinion. Landon was one of the greats and will always be remembered in my book!!! Long live that soulful singing!

  • one of the best bluegrass songs ever...

  • Wes Miller covered it on his '9 Out Of 10' album.

  • Hi PotterPossum. I found Wes Miller's cover at cd baby. Wes's voice is awesome, he totally captures the Dave Evans sound. Thanks for turning me onto him. --Jan
