try reading the book.. it's so wel written it takes you so far into dyscription of objects that you can smell its perfume.. for me the story is about a guy who's been denied time after time, from birth till he creats the perfume and than "kills himself for recognition" (this one is art)
this is one of the most wonderful movies i've ever seen!! it shows us that each one of us finally takes what (s)he deserves concerning their actions!!
The best movie ever. Ever. Ever. Watched it when it first came out and I've watched it for 235654325 times and it is always perfect as the first time.
@MrsBrainstitch bullshit, unless if you like seeing girls being smashed in their heads and boiled in hot water by a skinny ugly grease haired pervert who wins in the end despite killing all the girls. not to mention the disgusting fuck fest in the end
@dividednation44 For me, Grenouille's purpose was to create a perfume that would prove to be so intoxicating, that all who came within its vicinity would be overwhelmed with passion & love by its very smell. Maybe then he wouldn't be shunned, as he had been his whole life. It was a movie more about the sensuality of a human being, and what they are willing to do to posses it, rather than just blood and gore. In the end, his masterpiece proved too much for one man alone to handle
I actually really enjoyed this movie, I also loved the book; it's interesting, original and it keeps your attention right to the end. One word of advice though, if any part of this movie confuses you or you find anything strange (and trust me there are plenty of moments like that) don't tell any obsessive fans. I know all fans aren't like this, most are great, but the manics will rain their arty "you didn't get the message you cretin" vengeance upon you if you question this movie.
I don't like it, although I like historical-based movies. I thought that it was much more interesting, but to me it was a bit too much boring. It would be much, much better if the story was about a man who makes a death perfume, or the perfume of life.
I really enjoyed the movie, even though the main actor is a creepy fucker, always sweaty, greasy and fucking disgusting. But damn the end was horrible. Most of americas' movies have horrible ends, but this was exceptionaly bad.
Great book and film, though quite disturbing! As a French-speaker though I think it's unfortunate they didn't ask a French person how you pronounce grenouille - it's like gruh-nooy, not gruh-nwee.
It truly psychologically makes sense that a serial killer operates on the drive that motivates them. Sometimes they think they murder for a good cause. Others kill for the pleasure of it. And we see in this film that a young man's drive to simply to smell and be satisfied. That can be truly horrific.
~This story has intrigued me for years. I am just now understanding the point. The moral of this story is that he obtains this power, and his reward for his efforts is nothing but heart break. The reason being' .. he has the inability to love or to be loved...So' with all his hard work he still ends up with nothing.. because he could not love. Love is the answer.

This movie is about 99.8% true to the book which is a rare thing. It's an awesome movie, awesome book and awesome soundtrack. Not since Lord of the Rings trilogy can you find these three things (book, movie, and music) amazing. I always recommend this movie and book.

dont get the ending...people praised him as angel when he put some of his perfume (made from young female virgins scent) and suddenly they stripped off their clothes? the movie doesnt make any sense at the end
@Xanthosis012 I havent seen the movie et, but in the book, all teh people on that field become so filled with love for Grenouille that they express it by ripping their clothes and making love to who ever is next to them.... Btw, that's where it ends?
@JennLonhon no, it ends when grenouillle went back to his birthplace at the fish market and see a group of hungry people sitting by the fire...he pour all of his perfume and the hungry people charged and ate him alive...its ridiculous
@JennLonhon the whole thing was good...I'd give 8/10 but after seeing the ending, my rae drop to 5/10...if u read the book, I guess its actually a great movie for u to watch
the book has the same name of the film, it was written long before, in 1985, by an author called patrick suskind. the book is very good, very deep, but the film does nor betray the book. the film is great. the only difference is that in the book the end of the story is slightly different.
infallible i agree with you... but i must say... in this movie which i saw after reading the book, i almost felt that i was inside the book when watching the movie. excellent in my opinion.

No, I don't agree.
I think it's a terrible movie, the only positive things I can say about it, are the 1-2 good actors in it (baldini (dustin hoffman) and richi (alan rickman)and the good... pictures (dk how it's called, I think some of the scenes.. look well)
but otherwise it's really, really bad. it's overcommercialized, the grenouille from the movie has nothing to do with the one from the book, and the whole film just missed the point entirely. but I love rickman's and Hoffman's acting.
I completely agree with you. The book has an underlying theme that you can take with you allowing you to gain insight into human nature and the nature of earthly love. The movie fails to impart that to the public. It was made plainly to promote spectacle and to shock the viewer.
I saw the movie on a 52 inch screen, with surround sound - so that made the movie even better! The movie is based on a book, so as most people know, it is very difficult to bring a visual from the form of a book (the ending was probably really hard to represent - it's like trying to explain your dream to a friend). However, it was really well done and I like the fact that it wasn't casted with well known celebrity actors. Very visual.
Have read the book 3 times. One of my favourite pieces of literature ever. I' not impressed by the trailer, don't think I'll watch the film. I like the scenes as they appear in my head from reading the story.
Same with Clockwork Orange. The book far surpassed the movie. Though I guess it depends on how you interpret and visualise what you read. :)
Me too! I love Alan Rickman. I watched Sweeney Todd only because of Alan Rickman(and Johnny Depp). But I love Rachel Hurd-Wood too! Love all tree!!!<3

the movie is enchanting... full of colour and smelly things..
dont worry it will interfere with your own visualizations of the book, it wont
i have read the book twice and still remember the thrill of first reading it, it will never go away (like with all good literature)
