uhm this may sound stupid - but im 14 and i looove this song, but can someone explain the Howard Zinn quote @ the end?

The song is about how the school system teaches blind patriotism. Howard Zinn is saying that no matter how patriotic you try to appear, you will never be able to cover up the bloody past of American history. "....The shame of killing innocent people for a purpose which is unattainable" Means that all the bloody wars and violence we have created in our history does not make us any safer. Waving a flag doesn't change that.
