I read somewhere (maybe on the 4 disc cd set) that The Night They Drove Old Dixie down had more added to the song, but listening to the un-edited version as it came from the concert the song as found in the movie and on the 2 disc set is complete.
From what I understand this is as it came from the mixing board at the concert. I actually have the full concert as it was recorded directly from the mixing board. I'm not sure how it became available. I'm not gonna say how I got it for obvious reasons.
This is one of the saddest things I have ever heard. Richard is my absolute favorite member of the Band. I love him! In the studio recording you can hear a farmers desperation, because his farm failed. In this recording, that desperation is replaced by the desperation of a man trying to hit the notes that he no longer can. Imagine how different his life would have turned out if he'd stayed away that awful substance. RIP. In our hearts forever.
For some reason this isn't working but think that's just my computer. Will try again later.
Was wondering though, does anyone know where I can see any footage of the performances that didn't make it to the movie. Know they're all on the CD which I'm gonna have to get but would love to see more footage. Watched TLW about 50 times and always left feeling like I want more.
Amazing that this was played betweeen "Ophelia" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". Like "Georgia on My Mind", Richard sings it well despite his voice sounding bad and the horn section really shines.
Acording to Levons book, During the mid 70s Richards utilitys were shut off, exept electricity and he was cooking steaks on the back of a shirt iron. He was also drinking 7 bottles of whiskey a day. So the time The Band had off after Before The Flood Tour was when Richard dug his grave. R.I.P. Richard a Rock Legend.
This statement is unfair to Richard. His voice is wobbly here but during this gig he did a fantastic job. He sings beautifully on I shall be released.
The Last Waltz's I Shall Be Released is depressing to listen to; he's clearly trying to maintain the falsetto from the Big Pink cover, but he can't manage it for more than a few seconds, so it's just a bunch of uneven additions.
If I could sing like anyone who ever lived, I would take Manuel's voice at its prime without hesitation, but the dude fucked himself up, plain and simple.
I guess I just thought the comment was uncalled for and disrespectful of Richard because he can't defend himself. My guess everybody there had their issues but maybe Richard's were bigger. How do you know he just didn't have a bad cold. Also I prefer his songwriting to his singing.
@quickhick Was there a problem with his mic as well? Or not facing it so sounds in the distance? I agree that RM looks awful on the film - whatever the Robbie haters say, clearly only RR & Levon were really still firing on all cylinders by 1976.
@anthonythirteen This version is as it was recorded directly from the mixing board at the concert. From what I understand they had to do a lot of work to the songs to make them more suitable. I've listened to the whole concert as it came from the mixing board due to someone posting a recording of it online and I could tell a lot of the songs needed work in order to make the movie a success and in order for the album to sell.
Robbie Robertson stuffed the Last Waltz down the throats of the rest of The Band, he forced the guys that were supposed to be his brothers to quite when they still wanted to keep going. He stole the credit, and the money, for all of their music, Levon Helm was the real leader of the Band not Robbie. The music was created by all of them working together, Robbie Robertson just took the credit. He was and is a piece of.... You get my point I'm sure.
There is no reason to believe that The Band was any different from any of their contemporaries in their songwriting credits. Beatle songs are usually credited to Lennon-Mccartney, not Lennon-Mccartney-Harrison-Starr. Ditto with the Stones, and pretty much everyone else. To everyone except Levon Helm, playing on a song does not mean you wrote it. On Richard's three solo credits on Big Pink, he did not share any credit...he was playing by the same rules too.
2002 The Band compilation CD on the Dutch Disky label. Disky also released the compilation The Weight in 1996 and a deluxe re-release of Rick Danko's first solo album in 2000
The Moon Struck One is more like a Richard Manuel tribute than a Band compilation, since Richard sings lead on all the tracks here (sharing lead vocal with Levon and Rick on some songs, of course).
Thank you so much, I have been looking for these songs from the "Complete Last Waltz" for years, THERE is still one Richard Manuel classic left to post and thats "Chest Fever" from the "Complete Last Waltz"
