Basically everything is hard about him. On a technical level his unique mechanique called Mist Cancelling is quite hard to learn and use. And because you have to Mist Cancel a lot , you can't pick him up fast.

Then even his simpler combos are hard.

Then a lot of his combos and setups are character specific, which basically means you have to memorize a lot.

Then on gameplay level, you often have to hit the opponent twice to do good damage (1st: coin 2nd: actual damage combo)

Slayer is like an old school kind of cool while Johnny is like "new twist on classic archetype" kind of cool.
