Come on people calm down. A great way to potty train a puppy is by using a crate. It should only be big enough for the puppy to lay down and turn around or they will defecate in it. When dogs lived in the wild they slept in a small den to stay safe and keep warm. A crate provides the dog with a safe den and teaches them bladder control. An untrained puppy should never have free run of the house or they could hurt themselves! Never leave a puppy in the crate for more than a few hours though.

This plastic kennel does seem kind of small. I don't use a kennel at all now, but did use a large mesh kennel when my bitch was in heat (because of the spotting) before she was spayed. A vet will tell you that dogs naturally burrow and like the feeling of having a cozy small place to sleep. Now of course mine are completely spoiled and snuggle next to us on the bed.
The only time I put my dig in a cage was when she was a puppy and it was a large dog crate and she only went in for 5 to 10 minutes if she was bad the door was open because it had her food/water and bed putting animals in a small space for an extended amiund of time is just plain cruel!!!!! This is really cute, but this is NOT a crate! This is WAY TOO SMALL an area to leave a dog for any length of time. You should be ashamed! I hope you got her a bigger REAL crate so she can actually move around. I would have tried to escape too!
That is just too cute...I also suggest a larger crate for her...I had dogs years ago (Afghan hounds) and they LOVED their "condos". We'd just leave the doors open when we were home and they'd go in them all by themselves.
When we would go out, we'd close the doors. Voila! Dogs safe, house safe...
@smharb1 You're supposed to give them crates that aren't too big, and upgrade them as they get older. Otherwise they learn to use the bathroom in their crates, and don't treat them as a home, like they should (if you plan on keeping them in crates overnight and such).
Well, you can comfort yourselves with the knowledge that in a few weeks she won't fit through there anymore! Our beagle loved to hide under the couch for the first two weeks. Then all of a sudden she got stuck trying to get out. She never went under there again! :-)
@Tadej96SLO you have to train puppies and its not abuse, some people dont want there stuff chewed when they get home or to have to clean up crap and pea! yorkies are especially bad about chewing and its a puppy so it might not be potty trained! =)

@levellerswe Allow me to educate you! Dogs natural instincts involve them using their skills as den animals. Crate training uses their intelligence in order to get them accustomed to living in a home as they would in a den. Crates become their little den, a place they feel safe and comfortable, and a place they won't soil. That's how they learn to leave the crate, and eventually the home in order to use the bathroom outside. It's not mean, it's teaching according to a dog's natural instincts.
My dog loves his crate. He is 13 and still sleeps in it every night of his own accord (with the door open, of course). He's even defensive of it. We only used it sparingly when he was a pup, just for when we were out for long periods of time. There is nothing cruel about it, like others have been saying.
what's wrong with cages? if you treat the puppy nicely, play with it, feed it and give him water, he loves you, and doesn't mind. if you abuse a puppy, (first i will kill you) then put it in a cage, it will feel trapped, and unloved </3 all puppies should be loved
When I first got my puppy, I wasn't a huge fan of the crate. But it's very helpful with small dogs. It keeps them from choking on things or chewing furniture, and what's more, gives them a place where they fell safe. My dog gets crazy separation anxiety, but often spends time in his crate of his own accord. It's a safe spot that's only his.

Very smart dog i would suggest getting a new crate (pretty crate though) but if you still like it put tape on the sides so it will hold while your out and kiwi won't escape its much safer for your dog :) i hope your doing great kiwi is adorble by the way! beautiful pup!

And this cage is too small. If people are too dumb to find a humane a way to train their dog , those people should take their own medicine. This is really cute, but this is NOT a crate! This is WAY TOO SMALL an area to leave a dog for any length of time. You should be ashamed! I hope you got her a bigger REAL crate so she can actually move around. I would have tried to escape too!

That is just too cute...I also suggest a larger crate for her...I had dogs years ago (Afghan hounds) and they LOVED their "condos". We'd just leave the doors open when we were home and they'd go in them all by themselves.
When we would go out, we'd close the doors. Voila! Dogs safe, house safe...

@smharb1 You're supposed to give them crates that aren't too big, and upgrade them as they get older. Otherwise they learn to use the bathroom in their crates, and don't treat them as a home, like they should (if you plan on keeping them in crates overnight and such).

Well, you can comfort yourselves with the knowledge that in a few weeks she won't fit through there anymore! Our beagle loved to hide under the couch for the first two weeks. Then all of a sudden she got stuck trying to get out. She never went under there again! :-)

its important to train them to be on their own but youre doing it wrong and shes obviously distressed.

@Tadej96SLO you have to train puppies and its not abuse, some people dont want there stuff chewed when they get home or to have to clean up crap and pea! yorkies are especially bad about chewing and its a puppy so it might not be potty trained! =)

@GirlyGamers101 ....we got 2 dawgs and they re both outside...one alaskian malamute and other mix between corgi and something....corgi mix never chews/pee's/craps when hes in the house...and hes happy with being outside and he never gets locked for any reason -.-'' also for malamute...hes always outside cuz hes simply too big and he got too much 'fur'? for being inside lol.

@levellerswe Allow me to educate you! Dogs natural instincts involve them using their skills as den animals. Crate training uses their intelligence in order to get them accustomed to living in a home as they would in a den. Crates become their little den, a place they feel safe and comfortable, and a place they won't soil. That's how they learn to leave the crate, and eventually the home in order to use the bathroom outside. It's not mean, it's teaching according to a dog's natural instincts.

My dog loves his crate. He is 13 and still sleeps in it every night of his own accord (with the door open, of course). He's even defensive of it. We only used it sparingly when he was a pup, just for when we were out for long periods of time. There is nothing cruel about it, like others have been saying.

what's wrong with cages? if you treat the puppy nicely, play with it, feed it and give him water, he loves you, and doesn't mind. if you abuse a puppy, (first i will kill you) then put it in a cage, it will feel trapped, and unloved </3 all puppies should be loved

When I first got my puppy, I wasn't a huge fan of the crate. But it's very helpful with small dogs. It keeps them from choking on things or chewing furniture, and what's more, gives them a place where they fell safe. My dog gets crazy separation anxiety, but often spends time in his crate of his own accord. It's a safe spot that's only his.

cute puppy, cool crate. we crate trained our puppy too. she cried but then after she was trained, she wanted to go back into the crate. we left the door open and she would go in and out as she pleased. PLEASE RESEARCH HOW TO CRATE TRAIN PUPPIES BEFORE YOU DO IT. DON'T CRATE TRAIN AN ADULT DOG.
There is the right (humane) way and the not so good way.

Very smart dog i would suggest getting a new crate (pretty crate though) but if you still like it put tape on the sides so it will hold while your out and kiwi won't escape its much safer for your dog :) i hope your doing great kiwi is adorble by the way! beautiful pup!
